Sven is a very beautiful bird. I want to get a budgie but I've not seen the right one yet. I talk to them and see how they react to me and my voice. I'm not sure if that will make any difference or not but that's the selection method I want to try. In the past I just picked what I thought was pretty.

Is he potty trained? One of my friends had 2 which were potty trained yet she never potty trained them. their cage was under a chair in a open basket in their living room. they would run around the living room but never too far from the basket. and they only pottied in the basket. it was so cool.

@ii3rittles There are several clear plastic sheets, under areas where he spends a lot of time perching, for pooping. 70% of his poops end up on these, but the rest are sprinkled throughout my apartment!

my budgies never do this. they are almost afraid of everything. when I get them new toys it takes almost a month for them to get used to it. but I still love them.

@purplebudgiee Don't worry - it sometimes takes Sven two years before he shows an interest in toys. In fact he has had a rubber duck for three years, and it was only last week that he decided to befriend it. Now he loudly kisses it on the beak, and tells it he loves her (I assume it's a her ..)

@snoogly It took my budgie 6 months to get used to the bell toy I made him; now he's playing with it everyday. It seems like budgies have different waiting times to adjust to new toys.

Birds are like small children. They will play and experiment with their toys until they figure out just how they work. Mine would spend hours just picking at and jiggling the doors of his cage until he could open all three perfectly, and without a sound.

Usually I just try to leave them with the toys for at least 30 minutes a day until they simply get used to them. Mind you, I make sure to supervise them incase something happens. I'm overly cautious with my animals. Once they're not afraid anymore, they tend to figure out the tricks on their own. It just takes time and patience.

All I can really recommend for that is a lot of time and patience on your part. It sounds to me like you just need to build up their trust, which is done by talking gently to them, not making any fast or sudden movements, and just plain trial and error. When we first got my budgie, Duo, the little stinker was extremely shy. With a lot of handling on my and my mother's part, he grew to be very confident around us. I have a video up of him trying to eat my fiance's camera, even.

My budgie loves to sleep on me lol...she either climbs up and down my clothes or goes to sleep...luckily she doesn't bite when you grab her :D

Please be careful not to fall asleep the same time when your budgie falls asleep on you. You could accidentally suffocate or crush her.  Just looking out for you both...

Thanks for the tip. However, sometimes he lands on my nose while I am sleeping - and then he falls asleep.

Luckily no problem so far, but I do know that this is a relatively 'common' budgie killer.

People don't understand.  You get what you put into the bird. Take a parakeet, and just leave it in it's cage and not spend time with it, and you get a flighty bird with no personality.

That's so true! It's the same sort of thing with rabbits. Leave it in its cage, you get a nasty usually grumpy animal that's too fat to bounce properly. I spoil Todd rotten, but everyone loves him because he has such a great personality. Everyone thinks he's like a puppy that never grows up!
