  • to all that think the ls is the greatest thing from sliced bread. pick your battles. if you have ebough power no matter what the car weighs you still can pull good numbers, but racing against a forced induction car that obviously is not stock isnt the smartest thing to do. this car will run circles around an ls. with no problem. gm products suck anyway.

A 200HP difference is a large margin, also considering the weight difference in these cars. I'm sure the GTO has a lot more weight on the mustang. Probably an almost 800lb difference. And weight matters, my dad and I drag race boats and every bolt matters.

  • awsome car. ive always like screaming yellow cobras. with that blower and the amount of boost you are running, you should be easily making 600. my old 03 cobra had a 2.4 kb running 14psi on 91 octane with all the supposrting mods was making 530 whp. with the 2 3/4 pully the guy that tuned it claimed it should make around 650ish on 100 octane.

  • @blackjacksmitty Ha...to bad if you have ever been to a real dragstrip a 03-04 cobra posts the same 0-60ft as a GT500 and puts a .3 second faster 1/4 down all day long...find somone that can shift a cobra and you will find yourself door to door being slightly pulled by a stock cobra to your 6.0 GTO.

  • Longer life span over Push rod motors.Why do you think Mercedes,BMW,Volvo, Audi,etc all use DOHC motors in their V8's because you don't have to have massive displacement method like GM still uses today to make any serious power;And that's why Ford switched over to the OHC method for building motors. For instance look at the Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe 571HP and 650TQ with a DOHC 378CI V8 and that's only 67HP less then your precious ZR1Vette that has to have a s/c and 427ci 638hp V8 to make any power.

And the only reason why the LS1 is lighter is because it is FULL ALUMINUM MOTOR ,If GM used cast iron parts like Ford uses that LS1 would have made even less power then what it did and wouldn't have even barely broken the 300HP mark if at all. And DOHC motors have less moving parts , meaning higher RPM's.

    Yes, the Mustang was built much better, but both drivers raced anyway. Maybe the GTO knew it would lose, but it raced anyway. Whether or not it looked like a fool trying to keep up, it was still a race. Seems as though they both had fun, and that's all that matters, other than being safe.

  • @slingblade1991 You're a bit off there. The '89 GTs weighed around 3300lbs and the '89 Civics weighed around 2200lbs; both w/o driver. And yes there's a power difference, but you're comparing a 15sec, 24mpg hwy car vs a 17.5sec, 45mpg hwy car. Most of the time, a Civic is going to need a motor swap from a high-end Honda to get good power because they're economy cars.

  • @importsdominate an 89' gt hatch weighs 3300,a notch is closer to 3000.ive seen one on a scale.and you dont have to swap the engine in the mustang......im not trying to be a fanboy here, but mustangs are clearly the best bang for your buck car if you want to modify and make fast...ever.

  • @slingblade1991 Sounds like you're speaking more of the LX 5.0 coupe. Last I've seen, they're the same thing. 3000-3100 sounds about right for them, hence why they're the better choice for a racing Mustang in the fox style.

    And, sorry chap, I don't race anything anymore. Can't afford it. I have more important things to spend my money on.

    Most people I know w/ imports are running 200-400K on them. Most I know w/ domestics are replacing motors and trannies at 30-70K plus failing suspension parts. Imports rule, suck it up, bud.

  • @importsdominate And the GTO has more displacement, so what is your point? I think it all boils down to which car is easier and cheaper to make fast and that would be the cobra, thats why there are so many more fast cobras than GTO's.

  • @slingblade1991 The Mustang was and is much more popular than any GTO ever was, so that's why there's so many more fast Cobras than GTOs. The new GTOs had a much bigger motor, so while probably the price range for typical modifying was around the same, in the long run the GTO could easily over power the Cobra having more displacement.
