I also think that the type of punishment should be determined by the child's temperment. I was very strong willed and rebellious, and my parents tried to put me in time out, but I wouldn't stay in the chair. They tried to take toys away, but then I would throw a temper tantrum and sulk for hours. The only thing that made me act like less of a demon was being spanked.
I was spanked as a child. But in a non-aggressive way. My dad would sit me down and talk to me for about 15 minutes and tell me why what I did was wrong, and explain the ramifications. Then he would ask me if I understood, and ask me to explain why I did it, and then I had to apologize. Then I was spanked three times with a wooden paddle. I was NEVER spanked for doing something that I didn't know was wrong. Only when I was openly rebellious. That's how it should be done.
Please. If beating children actually had any impact on them growing up to be respectable adults, there wouldn't even BE an Australia because there would have been no criminals with which to populate it.

I agree with you. My pastors kids are good examples of spanked kids that turned out to be awesome adults. They were home schooled, skipped grades & are now on all honors at their colleges. As you said, a smack on the butt is quite different than an abusive beating. And if the parent is that mad he needs to walk away and cool off first before dealing with the child. I was spanked & I never did the things again that I was spanked for.
