And there is a reason for that. The way our constitution establishes government, with a bicameral legislature with an even numbered Senate that breaks ties with a vice-presidential vote lends itself to a 2 party system. Unless you rewrite the gov't to form a parliamentary system we will ALWAYS have 2 parties.

The system may favour two parties but there is no law that prevents third parties, only the American peoples' lack of effort towards a viable third party prevents it. If a third of people that didn't vote voted for a third party it would give the current two branches of the one party you have a run for their money. That's the same S&P that rated junk Mortgage backed Securities as AAA. That's the same S&P that made a $2 Trillion math error in their math on the downgrade. Moreover, the report on the downgrade blamed "political brinksmanship" particularly the pledges never to raise taxes.

@KidOmniMan Third parties don't work in this country, and not because they haven't been tried. They have been tried often, and the only thing they all have in common is failure. And there is a reason for that. The way our constitution establishes government, with a bicameral legislature with an even numbered Senate that breaks ties with a vice-presidential vote lends itself to a 2 party system. Unless you rewrite the gov't to form a parliamentary system we will ALWAYS have 2 parties.

@shalcall A defeatist attitude is not only ineffective at getting anything done it is pathetic as well. The system may favour two parties but there is no law that prevents third parties, only the American peoples' lack of effort towards a viable third party prevents it. If a third of people that didn't vote voted for a third party it would give the current two branches of the one party you have a run for their money. You grow a third party by supporting it consistently.

@KidOmniMan It's not about a defeatist attitude. You don't seem to understand that it's more than just a lack of effort. It's the way the government is STRUCTURED that prevents viable 3rd parties. Even if everyone in the country wanted a 3rd party, it would devolve into 2 parties if our government, the way it is currently structured by the constitution, wanted to accomplish ANYTHING.
You want a parliamentary system. Great, call for a constitutional convention, THEN call for a 3rd party.

@shalcall I see your point about congress not being able to accomplish anything with more than two parties, though I still think there could be co-operation between 2 or more parties working together in congress to get mutually agreed upon legislation passed but I'm Canadian so I am used to a parliamentary system.
I've never been able to understand Americans reluctance to vote for anything but red or blue, I've voted for three different parties in my life, Parliaments aren't perfect either.

@kingbane2 All the things he keeps caving to? From health care to lackluster wall street reform, I always ask, would it have been better to do nothing at all. The answer has always been no. And to say that Obama gets support from both sides is just talking in ignorance. If you think Republicans, moderate or otherwise, support this administration, you're smoking something a lot stronger than heroin.
