There was once a time when conservatives defined "traditional marriage" as a White man and a White woman. That's it. Whites couldn't marry non-whites, etc. The opponents of this didn't want to "Change marriage" they wanted to make it equal, so that if two people of different races loved each other, they could get married. The same thing is happening now, we aren't trying to change marriage, since every culture has a different meaning of the word, we just want to make it more inclusive. Cheers.

Marriage was a civil contract between families for land and /or wealth / power. The couple were often strangers days before the wedding. Women were for bringing male children into the family.
