I'm sure I read somewhere about Bruce Lee having a particularly hairy sparring session with a karateka called Nishiyama, apparently Bruce Lee was very impressed with the guys punches or kicks, can't mind which. So, is this the same guy? Or is it his son?
@Dave54600 Hi there, it was the legendary Kanazawa who Bruce had a fight with. Bruce lee won by a hares wisker, and Kanazawa had many apotunitys to beat him during the match. Like many fights this one is also open to speculation.
This is amazing. Sensei Nishiyama was my Sensei's Sensei. This is getting the chance to see your grandfather when he was young. This reminds me of my Sensei in so many ways. Thanks for posting this. A great service to the history of the art.
Nishiyama received a Master of Arts degree in economics from Takushoku University in 1951.That same year, he was a co-founder of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) and was elected to the JKA board of Directors.
sorry, I meant, a Karate guy is supposed to move like a water strider; his feet NEVER leave the ground for more than a hair's width during a fight.
A Karate guy skims the surface of wherever they are fighting, the way a water strider skims the surface of water. This is the way maximum mobility is achieved, without sacrificing solidity of the stances. Thing is, applying that in a fight is murderously difficult.
the way you "walk around" in Karate, is supposed to ressemble the movements of a water skimmer, so that a practitioner never leaves their "en guarde!" stance.
Very hard to do; the only way that manner of "walking" becomes natural is to do Kata over and over.
Does anyone know who is the female karateka that featured in this?

this is JKA, not Nishiyama Karate

@tokaidosan no one has indicated that it is Nishiyama Karate, there is a period after his name in the title,
he is just saying who, and what it is.

at least they're moving the right way.
