As much as shawn is one of my idols, specifically as a guitarist, I have to say the "award" in the video goes to jonas and selva. Great spontaneous interplay.
is this tune on one of hellborg/lane's albums with selvaganesh? i've got good people in times of evil but didn't know they recorded anythign else as a trio
Selvaganesh needs to pack chewing tobacco for people as a side job. He'd be so good at it haha.
And this video displays the unbelievably amazing partnership between Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg, two of some of the least recognized and noncoincidentally most talented musicians of our time.
The most spectacular musician ever. There are moments in his playing that the notes seem blur into one another at such amazing velocity, as if a demon sped- up a sequencer and threw it into a nuclear blender, though Shawn played it live with those fingers of his. I saw him in the early 90's. He was spectacular!
Do you remember roughly when and where you saw Shawn live?? The early 90's was my fave period of Shawn's music, especially the Powers of Ten period (1992-93).
If you can tell me roughly where and when it was, i may be able to pinpoint an exact date for you.
Wow, you are so very, very lucky!! That Troubadour gig was on the 9th Feb 1993. What i would give to hear a recording of that gig!
I'd certainly pay $200 for each and any PoT Band gig i don't have (i already paid a total of $135 to get hold of the "PoT Band - South End, Memphis - 12th Dec 1992" gig, which i posted clips from on here, and then converted the whole gig to Audio, split it into tracks, and uploaded it for anyone to download for free (i did that for all the PoT Band gigs i have).
Just out of interest, do you happen to remember seeing anyone at all there with a video camera???.... Just the thought that someone may have recorded it is enough to give me hope of possibly hearing or seeing it someday.
The place was packed however no video cams. I contacted his mother Diane Lane when Shawn passed-on, discovering she has fantastic footage on DVD for sale. I go through her exclusively.
John Petrucci is one of my favorite guitarists as well as Lane ... but I dont think even Petrucci a master of odd time signatures and complicated licks could touch Shawn.
did he not play ibanez and charvel in his instructional videos? Plus all those videos of him playing an assortment of guitars when he was really young. I'm only aware of him playing vigier in the few remaining years of his life.....
He actually didn't play guitar, but more so keyboards in practice, anyway. A very close friend of his, and most recent friend of mine is in Memphis playing Shawn's memorial this week. The headstock looks like a reverse Vigier, but I will ask my buddy, and tell you for sure. Cool? apb
I heard him say in a clip taped at a clinic where he says that he loves keyboards and that playing them really helped his technique on guitar. However to state that he didnt really play guitar, or really practice it..... to get to his level you have to put in thousands of hours worth of practice and we know he was fascinated and dedicated to the instrument from a relatively early age. Which is why he says he got his lightning technique down so quickly because he was so fascinated with it.
You'd be surprised to learn how very little he had to work on guitar. Keyboards were his bridge to get to where he was on the guitar. He took to the guitar, and his technique quite quickly, from his board experience. Did he practice on guitar? Sure, but very seldom from 16 on. apb
see now there is confusion on what you exactly mean. Alot of great guitarists will tell you that once he figured out and developed his technique, he didnt need to "practice" anymore. Practice meaning many hours a day doing the same exercises trying to build up speed and accuracy on their instrument. I KNOW that within about three-four years from the age of ten shawn had his technique down. Now it is weird, alot of pro guitarists ive met say they don't practice but yet if you ask them
how long does it take with no playing to feel rusty? And they can quite happily say one day and laugh! For me practicing is like the same way its approached to say a doctor's practice. Everytime they pick up the guitar or do something musical it adds to their "musical practice" because people like shawn did something different everytime they picked up the guitar. Also from watching bits of shawn's tuitional vids on here he practiced very effectively, to do exercises which gave
"a really good workout", the muscle memory was there so he just needed a bit of maintenance to keep things working at stellar speeds. However if i swap your use of the word "practice" for "play", i believe he played the guitar all the time.
Apparently Shawn rarely played the guitar and did most of his writing on keyboard. However he practiced one things for sure...the guy was unreal.RIP Shawn
well the thing is on piano you have an actual way to pratice im sure any pianist who has had lessons can and do apply them to guitar
so they know and understand how to pratice
its all about knowing your instrument before you even try to play fast or any complex stuff its best to get use to it,if not this will cause problems later in life,
ex.players that push out their thumb on their picking hand can acutally burn out nerves that are in your wrist and palm making it hard to even tents up your hand
but thats after years of playing ive seen it happend to people 3 or 4 years later they were really good economy pickers..now their really good legatoist lol anyway once you understand about practicing you can improve much fast but that dosnt mean theres a short cut or anything
its like theory, sure you can write a song that might take a few months to write with great harmonies insane syncopated rhythms and great melody with out knowing theory, orrrrrr if you understand music theory that song will actually much easier to compose you would understand what your ideas are making the writing process much easier but regardless im sure theres going to be some frustration unless you have years of experience and love making music :D
shawn plays a lag the beast suprême ; a guitar built in bédarieux ; from south france.
but his playing is absolutely terrifying !!!!
