I guess since people think its the graphics that make this game bad I will explain in further detail...ok? These graphics arnt horrible for atari 2600. Since ET was such a great movie, atari thought they would make a lot of money if they made a game. Problem was they needed it out by christmas holidays so they only had like 5 weeks to make it. Atari thought it would be such a hit they made like 2 million copies of it, but it sold less than half of that. Atari ended up losing tons of money.

This actually isn't so bad. The action might seem pointless to modern eyes but have you seen Atari's "Adventure?" Exactly the same concept: wander into rooms, grab object, deposit object somewhere else. And a hugely popular game. People were much more easily amused then and weren't so jaded with simple game concepts. I think ET might have gotten a bad rap due to Atari wildly overestimating potential sales.

What seems to be going on is that ET is dropped off by the ship and he has to find pieces to make some kind communicator to contact it.

Those dark green images are the pits which ET can locate the right ones with a compass and a sensor when he stretches his neck up. He must do this while avoiding FBI and the scientists and before the timer runs out.

Seriously, how many of you ET bashers out there actually sat down to play this game on an Atari 2600 with the manual? This game is not half bad once you know what to do. Playing the game for two seconds on an emulator doesn't entitle you to call it the "worst game ever." And this didn't cause the crash. If anything, Pac-Man on the 2600 did and ET was just a victim of circumstance. This game is by no means a classic, but cut it some slack.
