I was at this gig and it blew my mind. I had gone to see Herbie Hancock who was on after Wayne. Sadly I was only able to stay for about half of Herbies set as it was quite frankly comedy after having seen this. Thanks Brian Blade for your awesomeness.
I SERIOUSLY think Wayne held off on going back into the song until Brian was finished killing the drums...ahaha!!! Excellent clip of how REAL drummers play!
The best part about this, is thats vinnie's kit behind blade. That means vinnie came out and played some shredding predictable boring BS after this insanely cerebral blade set.
How much is composed and how much is improvised? Tricky stuff from master musicians. Such tightness and such looseness all in the same musical phrase played!
Everybody be happy for me, 'cause today is the day that i'm getting hip to and hooked on Brian Blade. Thank God i live in an age and country where I can get a real musical education on You Tube and not just die of radio malnutrition. Peace!!!
@153redankh I am very happy for you indeed! I got hip to and hooked on Brian the day I picked up a Joshua Redmond recording (in the old days when record stores were still around!). Yeah man, I think Brian is one of the main drummers in jazz today. The future is his to define, like Elvin and Tony did many years ago. Hey, have a jazzy, funky, swinging, sharp major ninth with a flatted fifth, circle of fifths, Giant Steps kind of christmas :-)
i love it when brian blade whacks his cymbal and it come loose...he keeps bangin the shit out of the drums and uses all but the whacked out cymbal, then about 3 minutes later he needs it so he just crashes it and the whole thing is in the moment and sounds good. SHORTER is a living ledgend. Love to this group.
All it really takes is one person (I prefer a minimum of two - me and another), willing to go on stage and listen to one another fearlessly, to improvise with this kind of passion. These guys are masters of their instruments to begin with...........then they walk on stage without a net and bang...............this is what you get (or at least got, THAT NIGHT).
God damn, every time I watch this it's a revelation. This is so unbelievably musical that it's difficult to fathom how it's actually present in our time.
saw them at boston holy shit blew my mind, im 16 and ive herd alot of jazz i gotta say shorter just makes stuff unbelievable, he composed music with the orchestra it was worth crying over how beautiful it sounded
even pros makes mistakes. the motif that the pianist plays has a wrong note at :14 but gets it right the second time around at :26.that drummer is awesome.
How do you know? How do you know he didn't do that on purpose? It is probably safe to assume you don't know the piece of music because you obviously don't even know the band. While it is possible that he did make a mistake, unless you were looking at the score while watching this it would be pretty impossible for you to tell. Wouldn't it?
There's something about how Wayne approaches the tunes in this quartet that really catches me. He seems to go for these rather simple forms, with almost minimalist approach. The harmonic formulas almost reminiscent of pop music. And then within that, develop into this far out solos of virtuosic power. The overall sound is pretty close to what I'm looking for in music.
I hope you realize searching youtube videos just for the sake of talking shit about them makes you a fantastic asshole. Rest assured not only do people pay money to watch these extremely talented musicians, but they've probably made more money then you ever will. Learn something about music you fuck
Beautiful, Powerful, Explosive, Passionate, Honest, This joint right here is inspired. The playing is all or nothing. Wayne, and the whole band is having such a good time.
did a similar thing in sydney recently where he broke a mallet, shouted something out loud, and proceeded to thrash the other mallet away on a con till that one tore and broke too
blade is maybe my favorite contemporary drummer, he forces me to re-imagine my entire technique to see if it contains and expresses my emotions as quickly and accurately as Brian does. God Damn Man
This is pure jazz . . . . free . . . flowing . . . spontaneous . . . completely in the moment . . . . . "each time you play a tune, you never play it the same way twice, it's always different, always spontaneous & in the moment" . . . . this is jazz, jazz is art, art is constantly creating"
They are my favorite jazz group. I'd pay to see each separately. Together, they've come up with some kind of synergy that is beyond description. Incredible.
they came on stage, played the hell out of everything for more then 1.5 hour, and on top of that gave an encore of about 25 mins... afterward we tried to listen to some redman, but it just didn't do it anymore ;-) the best ensemble since davis/shorter/hancock/ carter???
I just saw Brian for the first time with Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Kenny Garrett, and Christian McBride. An inspiring night of wonderful jazz. I love Brian's fluid and expressive style. Beautiful musicianship.
This is so inspiring. You just see the passion within every crash that Blade makes literally. This goes way beyond euphony. It's music being played as the art it is as opposed to only playing music "musically." I love and absolutely admire this group.
I absolutely agree. Music is to be played musically because it obviously is "music". However I'm saying that these four practically legendary musicians most likely have reached the point in their musical journeys and lives where they can play music both musically AND with a more profound meaning as well.
Damn!! It was awefull to stop watching it so sudenlly! This was great, thanks for posting it!! What a combo... all those artists together... it's so sublime and breathtaking that it should be ilegal.. hehe..
I know I'm bias but this group an important part of jazz history to come. It's hard for most to understand. We get nostalgic with music we recognize in history and forget that the music must move forward. Coltrane never stopped moving forward, as well as Miles and more Wayne's many years in music allowed him to move forward. WSQ since 2001 and growing together and changing. The group members create this music because of Wayne. Like the Miles's effect on his great bands.
just caught this group on Sunday at Yoshi's...loads of spirits floating around the room. They played this piece during the 2nd set. It was stunning!! Just beautiful.
to me it feels like shorter glues the whole thing together .. plus he does write these tunes.... but blade kills it... just like his cymbal stand lol.... AMAZING!!!
Brian is nasty nasty. I'd like to hear these guys without Shorter. I bet they could get some crazy shit going. I'm just not a big fan of Shorter, anymore.

I wasn't talking shit about Shorter or anything. I didn't say he isn't any good. I just don't care for his voice. I prefer players like Zorn, Dolphy, and Coleman. He's a great player and I like his stuff he did with Miles and The Messengers. Maybe it's because every time I see him now it's with a soprano.
