  • I was at this gig and it blew my mind. I had gone to see Herbie Hancock who was on after Wayne. Sadly I was only able to stay for about half of Herbies set as it was quite frankly comedy after having seen this. Thanks Brian Blade for your awesomeness.

  • @14x16floortom I'd go easy on Herbie, no one in modern jazz is gonna get the best of this band.

  • I SERIOUSLY think Wayne held off on going back into the song until Brian was finished killing the drums...ahaha!!! Excellent clip of how REAL drummers play!

  • I am honestly surprised he hasn't broken one of those cymbals over the years

  • Cymbal stand bows down to blade round about 3:30

  • who's guitar gear is that set up at 3:20?

could you imagine kurt with these guys?!

  • @RadiusX7 there's no room for anyone in this 4tet in my opinion: this is perfection.

  • my teacher and i were discussing this exact group yesterday. what an awesome tool youtube is to actually see what he was talkin about.

    thanks for the upload Lassesteff

  • if anyone has any idea where or if this is recorded PLEASE

  • @Grillmouth "tve" means "Televisión Española" so...

  • @papupapu1 cheers i was more interested in cd versions but i think this is just a shorter 4tet spur of the moment thing....

  • @Grillmouth It says Jazz Vitoria/Gasteiz in neon behind. That's a festival in Basque country in Spain

  • Brian Blade and the Wayne Shorter Quartet play the truth...shit man

  • craziest video on youtube.

  • HOLY SHIT!!!! im going insane watching this again

  • The best part about this, is thats vinnie's kit behind blade. That means vinnie came out and played some shredding predictable boring BS after this insanely cerebral blade set.

  • @OGNOGN Not really.

  • @OGNOGN Fuck u u stupid cunt thinkin that Vinnie's and Blade school are similar and u can compare them. They are both Gods.

  • How much is composed and how much is improvised? Tricky stuff from master musicians. Such tightness and such looseness all in the same musical phrase played!

  • These MF are playing the shitttt....

  • 2 people are retarded if you dont like it why look and listen u tit go munch on some metal you foolish child

  • Everybody be happy for me, 'cause today is the day that i'm getting hip to and hooked on Brian Blade. Thank God i live in an age and country where I can get a real musical education on You Tube and not just die of radio malnutrition. Peace!!!

  • @153redankh I am very happy for you indeed! I got hip to and hooked on Brian the day I picked up a Joshua Redmond recording (in the old days when record stores were still around!). Yeah man, I think Brian is one of the main drummers in jazz today. The future is his to define, like Elvin and Tony did many years ago. Hey, have a jazzy, funky, swinging, sharp major ninth with a flatted fifth, circle of fifths, Giant Steps kind of christmas :-)

  • @153redankh I'm so with you, man.

  • 3:40 You know you're a great drummer when you get that kind of a reaction from God.

  • @ReminiscenceHr That cymbal hit FLIPPED the top of the stand!!! AMAZING. No wonder Wayne liked it.

  • @ReminiscenceHr amen

  • this is what god's voice sounds like

  • i love it when brian blade whacks his cymbal and it come loose...he keeps bangin the shit out of the drums and uses all but the whacked out cymbal, then about 3 minutes later he needs it so he just crashes it and the whole thing is in the moment and sounds good. SHORTER is a living ledgend. Love to this group.

  • All it really takes is one person (I prefer a minimum of two - me and another), willing to go on stage and listen to one another fearlessly, to improvise with this kind of passion. These guys are masters of their instruments to begin with...........then they walk on stage without a net and bang...............this is what you get (or at least got, THAT NIGHT).

  • cool, they have to cut it off at the climax. i think they do that on purpose just so the viewer can get an aneurysm

  • brian blade is the man definitely my biggest inspiration when it comes to the drumset

  • HOLY FUCK this is HEAVY

  • Anybody know what this song is called?

  • God damn, every time I watch this it's a revelation. This is so unbelievably musical that it's difficult to fathom how it's actually present in our time.

  • amazing grace...

  • ......undescribable...

  • holy fucknuts!

  • 3:41

    YEAH!

  • Post the rest please!

  • What is this song?!

  • danlo perez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • me acabo de cagar encima escuchando esto porque no queria ir al baño y dejar de escucharlo.

  • from 6:00 sounds like a really hot version of Evidence by monk!!

  • 5:05 gosh that sound man is brave !

  • No estan tocando, viajan por el universo.

  • SataNás!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i love how blade stands up and gets so into the music.

  • saw them at boston holy shit blew my mind, im 16 and ive herd alot of jazz i gotta say shorter just makes stuff unbelievable, he composed music with the orchestra it was worth crying over how beautiful it sounded

  • fuuuuuuuuuuuuck!!!!! ooooooooooooohhh

    holy shit

  • even pros makes mistakes. the motif that the pianist plays has a wrong note at :14 but gets it right the second time around at :26.that drummer is awesome.

  • @lucancherby

How do you know? How do you know he didn't do that on purpose? It is probably safe to assume you don't know the piece of music because you obviously don't even know the band. While it is possible that he did make a mistake, unless you were looking at the score while watching this it would be pretty impossible for you to tell. Wouldn't it?

  • @lucancherby what you call wrong note at 0:14 sounds pretty good to me.

  • There's something about how Wayne approaches the tunes in this quartet that really catches me. He seems to go for these rather simple forms, with almost minimalist approach. The harmonic formulas almost reminiscent of pop music. And then within that, develop into this far out solos of virtuosic power. The overall sound is pretty close to what I'm looking for in music.

  • @shoegazer666

I hope you realize searching youtube videos just for the sake of talking shit about them makes you a fantastic asshole. Rest assured not only do people pay money to watch these extremely talented musicians, but they've probably made more money then you ever will. Learn something about music you fuck

  • @wyatt375 why so butthurt, wyatt?

  • @shoegazer666 ouch a gay remark. I didnt realize i was talking to a 4th grader

  • Love seeing Brian's attack here..it's like food to me.

  • Beautiful, Powerful, Explosive, Passionate, Honest, This joint right here is inspired. The playing is all or nothing. Wayne, and the whole band is having such a good time.

  • wayne shorter's almost 80 now right?

  • yeah he's 76

  • brian blade i am your fan

  • man I watched that part at 5:00 when he fixes his cymbal and then smashes it over and over again DAMN

  • did a similar thing in sydney recently where he broke a mallet, shouted something out loud, and proceeded to thrash the other mallet away on a con till that one tore and broke too

  • wheres the rest!!!????

  • I was lucky enough to be at this concert, sitting behind Brian Blade. He was incredible. Life changing.....

Herbie Hancock and his band came on after these guys and I had to leave..... Can you believe that.

Mind you, who'd want to follow this performance.

  • blade is maybe my favorite contemporary drummer, he forces me to re-imagine my entire technique to see if it contains and expresses my emotions as quickly and accurately as Brian does. God Damn Man

  • truest bro

  • Damn, look at Blade's cymbal almost falling over!

  • el mejor cuarteto de jazz!!!!

  • Amazing communication in this tune, they are all everywhere, sensing every movement of eachother to keep a free flow.

  • brian......... blade...........

  • Wayne Shorter sounds like he needed to warm up a bit

  • And which concert or lifetime would that be?

  • @ssaxby02. no thats just how he sounds. and no one else can play like that.

  • ¡Increíble!

  • sonic loving all up in my tympanic membrane.

  • Does anyone know the name of this tune?

  • Beast!

  • FUCK. was what i said when the video ended abruptly. Damn..

  • I screamed "AAH!" out loud. No joke. Glad my roommate's weren't home.

  • Brian Blade did too...

  • @myhandhurts2 WHAT THE fuck, was was I said.

  • @myhandhurts2 woa! that's what I said!

  • brian's' fill at 4:11 or 4:12 sends chills down my spine

  • This is pure jazz . . . . free . . . flowing . . . spontaneous . . . completely in the moment . . . . . "each time you play a tune, you never play it the same way twice, it's always different, always spontaneous & in the moment" . . . . this is jazz, jazz is art, art is constantly creating"

  • No words.

  • this is freedom men!

  • I love these guys! :)

  • I just saw these guys play at the playboy jazz festival

  • Amazing !!!

  • Increíble. ¿Dónde está el resto del video?

  • They are my favorite jazz group. I'd pay to see each separately. Together, they've come up with some kind of synergy that is beyond description. Incredible.

  • love this group!!!!!!!! freedom

  • Freedom, agreed.

  • they came on stage, played the hell out of everything for more then 1.5 hour, and on top of that gave an encore of about 25 mins... afterward we tried to listen to some redman, but it just didn't do it anymore ;-) the best ensemble since davis/shorter/hancock/ carter???

  • These men come closer to channeling god's thoughts than anyone else.

  • Sublime

  • Reduced to tears. Then just flat out amazed by the synergy. This group is HOT

  • ...

  • I just saw Brian for the first time with Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Kenny Garrett, and Christian McBride. An inspiring night of wonderful jazz. I love Brian's fluid and expressive style. Beautiful musicianship.

  • at the knight concert hall?! i was there! it was amazing

  • Same here. Agreed.

  • This is so inspiring. You just see the passion within every crash that Blade makes literally. This goes way beyond euphony. It's music being played as the art it is as opposed to only playing music "musically." I love and absolutely admire this group.

  • I think the best way to play music is to play it musically and that is what they do

  • I absolutely agree. Music is to be played musically because it obviously is "music". However I'm saying that these four practically legendary musicians most likely have reached the point in their musical journeys and lives where they can play music both musically AND with a more profound meaning as well.

  • Thank you brain!

    thank you music!

  • i think Brian Blade is the smartest drummer out there.

  • buenisimo!

  • Fodaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!

  • 3:35 brian blade, looks kinda intentional but i doubt it

( the cymbal stand to his left flopping over near the top)

  • fuck travis barker!

  • @Bosphorus92 Travis Barker is a very bad drummer, I dont know where did this notion that he is good come from. Oh wait, I do, from 15 year old girls.

  • More, please!!! Gotta see more...

  • i saw them live in miami and i couldnt touch my drums for about two weeks lol

  • music ain't no contest bro

  • This would absolutely inspire me, not turn me off.

  • To heal the pain of all our greats leaving us, God gave us Blade.

  • Damn!! It was awefull to stop watching it so sudenlly! This was great, thanks for posting it!! What a combo... all those artists together... it's so sublime and breathtaking that it should be ilegal.. hehe..

  • passion, nothing else can be said...

  • Ugly beauty.

  • Just beauty.

  • epic.

  • A different melody with every note he plays.. brilliant!

  • its basically doc tone right?

    -Shoemake

  • whats the name of this tune. I think they did it at monterey. fucking mind blowing

  • I know I'm bias but this group an important part of jazz history to come. It's hard for most to understand. We get nostalgic with music we recognize in history and forget that the music must move forward. Coltrane never stopped moving forward, as well as Miles and more Wayne's many years in music allowed him to move forward. WSQ since 2001 and growing together and changing. The group members create this music because of Wayne. Like the Miles's effect on his great bands.

  • !! holy crap

  • just caught this group on Sunday at Yoshi's...loads of spirits floating around the room. They played this piece during the 2nd set. It was stunning!! Just beautiful.

  • to me it feels like shorter glues the whole thing together .. plus he does write these tunes.... but blade kills it... just like his cymbal stand lol.... AMAZING!!!

  • oh my god

  • Any more? Compared to when? I think he's playing his best since the 70s these days.

  • if shorter wasn't paying these guys to play with him, they would be playing shittier music with someone else---music is a lifelong trip and you are on a bummer trip...

dude just doesn't get it....what a sorry statement regarding a sax giant

  • I wasn't talking shit about Shorter or anything. I didn't say he isn't any good. I just don't care for his voice. I prefer players like Zorn, Dolphy, and Coleman. He's a great player and I like his stuff he did with Miles and The Messengers. Maybe it's because every time I see him now it's with a soprano. I'm not much of a soprano fan unless it's used in a 100% unique way, tone-wise. Also, these guys would be playing great music with or without Shorter. That's just stupid of you to say.

  • i honestly cant think of anything more 100% unique then wayne's tone.

  • on 2

  • Compare Danilo in and out

  • Wayne is way better than he appears to be.

  • Let's just say that there aren't many people who are able to experience the power of his music ;)

  • Fair enough.

  • Yeah, Blade er kongen!

  • goddamn! yeah! thks for posting

  • brian blade is phenomenal! ~:-]
