Roy says that he prefers singing the newer music than the older because the older music was more difficult to pull off gracefully live, trying to duplicate studio perfection live is very hard when you are in a thick air environment with moving around a lot and making physical expressions. though its obvious that Roy can still just barely pull off songs like this, but its not like he's this great every time, i know people who have complained about him before. i can appreciate this video though
@xeronik69 Well there is also the way that he performs the songs live. I appreciate the show of emotion (facial expressions) but along with that comes constricting the throat. The way he has performed live is fine and all if you do it once in a while, but doing that to your throat every night when on tour for years can harm the voice quite a bit. Aside from the fact that it shows emotion it is also used to push notes that cannot be hit without dipping into falsetto which is not good.
@hasseo1 By used I mean that he constricts his throat/ makes facial expressions because he is pushing himself vocally. Singing high without taking care of your voice can really start to hurt in the long run. But hey, he is still an amazing singer early material or not.
@hasseo1 well singing is to use your voice , but using it with the stumac to push out , not hte lungs..... and believe me , when i say that Roy is singing the correct way..... and going in falsetto ,is not that ''not good' , doing it the right way dont do damage to your voice . but being on tour doing this kind of singing every night , can do so damage , but then again , before singing like this , he will peform a serie of warmups to the voice , so that he Dont damage it more.
@Slashahan I know what singing is, I'm a tenor. My range is similar to Roy's so I know quite a bit about it. ^^ All you really did was restate one my points that singing like him on tour constantly can begin to harm the voice. The thing is his range has depreciated but he does push for notes that he shouldn't be going for.
@hasseo1 By notes that cannot be hit without dipping into falsetto I mean that he's trying to hit them without going into falsetto when he can't (in some cases). That's what's harmful, not the act of using falsetto.
@hasseo1, I agree with you, he definitely has to strain his voice when attempting to hit those high notes live without falsetto. In studio without trying to convey the music with visual expressions, movements, and with the ability to try again if he fails definitely helps when recording the original versions on the album. And him aging doesn't exactly help. ;)
@Bearthoughts Some people keep their voice up until who knows when. With the way he was singing (I'm a bit glad he stopped at least for now) he wasn't going to keep it nearly as long as some other singers.
@hasseo1, yeah, but I still want to hear him sing again as a guest vocalist for other bands (like Epica). But mainly on the studio recordings and less live.
@Bearthoughts A few guest vocals would be nice. He's still great live, but it probably wouldn't be good for him if he went back into the whole deal again.
this is not healthy for roy
