  • Thanks very handy!

  • isn't this the same like using the eraser tool to reveal the underneath layer without any masking ?

  • thanks for the great tutorial

  • I get all the way to the change just fine. I am trying to lighten part of the picture, but when I lchange the brightness and contrast, the entire picture lightens. What am I doing wrong?

  • what's the music?

  • i need help i do everything right but i can't alter it why can't i do it?

  • Thank u! :D

  • thank you!! i was so confused!!

  • when i paint over it, nothing happens. i make sure the layer under is invisible, i have clicked the square with a circle inside. why is it not working?

  • Ok like its not working at all and now it wont let me do anything its just this little hand and it like froze please help me!

  • I can't find the rectangle with the circle in it??

    *Hugs*

  • brilliant i did breifly learn this at college and forgot it for years.

since then ive been dublicting the layer altering the bottom one and using the eraser to see the area of the edited layer witch i wanted to change.

thanks this is a much better way of doing it.

  • The first mask I do always works. Then we I go to mask my eyes, it makes a mask around the whole picture so I cant change the color of my eyes without changing the whole picture. Whats up with this!?!?

  • i cant duplicated :(

  • After searching and looking at numerous tutorials, your video answered my questions in a fraction of the time it took to read the others.

    Thanks.

  • gotta say thanks!

  • thank u so much!!

  • When i make the brush color white and try to erase parts of the mask, it shows up white n it doesn't work. i'm not sure wut i'm doing wrong

  • IT WORKED lol. I was like...erg same prob w/ the square things...lol

  • i've done that and when i make the layer invisible...nothin happens when i try and use the paint tool...what happened?

  • The square line thing wont appear, i have photoshop cs4 and i turn the eye off and everything

    HELP PLZ!!

  • Thank you sooooooo much :D

    I get it now.

  • A lot of people have trouble with the checkered squares not showing up. You probably haven't made the first layer (the one underneath) invisible. Click on the eyeball next to the layer to make layer invisible. The checkered squares merely represent the ABSENSE of an image. I only make the layer invisible to see what I am doing. What you are doing afterwards when you make the layer visible is you are changing the color of the WHOLE layer that is underneath but only part of it is showing.

  • I have the same problem as LafayetteParis.

I do everything but that block simbol or whatever doesnt show. Please tell me what Im doing wrong?

  • Does this work for anything els than Photoshop? Because I use GIMP and when I do what you say it comes out black... I did evrything but I can't seem to figure out whats going wrong! Our we suposed to use the earaser? cus I tried that too and it came out white!!! Pleas help me!

    Thanks if you do!

  • I use Gimp too. So all you have to do use make a new layer then change the mode to Saturation, you will need to use white for the foreground, then all you have to do is drag the opacity down.

I hope that helps...if you haven't figured it out. But if you did...I'm sorry.

  • when i try this, i don't get the white/grey blocked thingy on my picture...:S don't get it. I just do whatever the vid says me to do, but it just doesn't work...Guess I'm doing something wrong!

  • nahh lol i had that same problem. what you need to do is go to the background layer, to the left of where it says background there should be a small pic of you and then to the left of THAT there will be a picture of an eyeball. click that and VOILA. haha problem solved :)

  • Thak buddy

  • THANK YOU!! This helped alot! :)

  • Thank you. That was very helpful. What is it called (I gather not "masking") when I want to isolate, say, a bird, or a cat, with all its feathers and/or fur, cut it out of a busy background, and past the animal, or person with flying hair, onto a new background. I thought that was masking, but I guess not. Thanks.

  • That's just cutting, you can use the magic lasso for a fairly accurate cut, then you copy the bird or whatever and put it onto whatever background you want. That's what i'd do at least, i'm not too great at it. It can come out weird if the object is underexposed compared to the background though, or if the cut isn't perfect.

  • Thank you for your masking tutorial. It is very helpful. I like the music too.

  • Thank you , this is very helpful and worked well, the last third of the tutorial was hard to follow but you did show all the mouse clicks required to make it happen, and it all worked fine, Thanks again!

  • bitch

  • >.> wtf where is my paintbrush?

  • thank you! :P

  • i understand it completely, but when i change the colour, the rest of the face changes colour too, any idea what could help?

  • Make sure you have the underneath layer selected before you start altering the color =P

  • I had the same problem, Just be sure that the layer you didn't alterate is selected. In fact you have just cut the lips from the picture and put the new poicture (layer) on the old one, so when you select the underneath layer (backround) and change it all the picture is changing but because you have a layer you ve made without the lips on that backround only the lips gonna be shown from the backround. hope i was clear :)

  • When i do the Masking it Overlaps The Original Mask if i Go back over it. Anyway to Stop this From happining ?

  • What I do is merge all the layers when I'm done with one mask. Then make another copy of the layer for the new mask.

  • I am painting with black too , what i do wrong please?

  • You have to make a copy of the layer first. Do it, Apply the mask, then turn off the visibility in the original layer. Click the layer copy & paint. It should show the transparency. After you're done selecting, turn click on the original layer & turn on the visibility. After that, you can adjust the color, curves, etc.

Tell me if it didn't work for ya! :)

  • Mine paints black too! Help!

  • Wow, that's great! Thanks so much. 5 stars from Turkey! Yeeeey, thanks again. ^_^

  • This could be helpful... but I can't get to the curves/color balance. Instead of just one piece of the pic, it changes the colors of the whole image. Please post ALL steps

  • To avoid this, click on the original layer, and then apply the curves/color balance thing.

  • Thank you!!!!

  • It doesn't show me those little squares when I paint. It paints with black color...HELP!!

  • Agree! mine does the same. Help.

  • Thanks alot, learned alot.

  • Wow thank you very much. It helped me a lot.

  • MIne wont work, do you know why?

  • I dont follow you....

    wtf?

  • thanks!

  • I can't put the mask ;S if the video wasn't with blur I would be able to see WERE TO CLICK --'

  • thanks!!

  • Photoshop? "Photoshop Mask Tutorial." lol...

  • lol yes. this is Photoshop

  • where is the rectnagle?

  • who knows? thats what im trying to figure out. and ITS NOT WORKING

  • Layers window, lower left part. :)

  • Open the layers window and it's there, lower left part.

  • I keep doing this over and over and it will start to work then im stuck?

also, when i try to cover the part with the paintbrush its red?

i only once got it to be the checker board grey that you had, and i cant do it again.

  • yea me too!! the whole area goes black....

  • for the first part where u select the rectangle with the circle i dont see that thing on mine. i have a macbook so is that why???

  • no but you may have photoshop elements

  • what kind do i need then?

    and whats the difference?

  • the newest one is photoshop CS4. I used elements and it is something like photoshop but it is more user-friendly. However you can do these things without using masks so it is on you to chose what to do

.....can you please make another and show a close up of everything your doing ...it would be really helpfull :D please!!!

  • i get evrything but i justcant highlight the part i want

  • I am so pleased I found this :)

  • Im confused by how you end up with 4 layers; did I miss something?

  • He's creating a new "effect layer" above the current layer and not applying it direct to it. That's the reason.

  • where's the rectangle with a circle in it loacated?

  • i cant find it either!!

  • wait, never mind, i figured it out.

  • how? I can't even find the rectangle/circle thing...

  • it doesn't work for me.

    what do I do?

    I duplecated the layer,

i clicked the rectangle with the circle in it,

    i changed the brush size,

    i clicked the eye thingy,

i tried making the mask thing, but it just won't work!

  • wow...great..

  • thnx

  • thank you!! it was very helpful!!

  • That was certainly helpful =]

Do you also happen to know how you apply freckles on someone's face?

  • excuse me- i need a bit of help- i tried the whole masking thing- but it doesnt start clearing the area like it did on urs- it just goes this reddish colour. the paint is on black n everything.. it just wont work

  • ur video has helped me change the hair in a picture, but i wanted to try and change the eyes too but im not sure how, i filled in the eyes and then tried to change it but i accidentally changed the hair again

  • right im newbie to this photoshop thing, so i hav absolutly no idea what ur talking abt

could you make a tutorial explaining the little buttons and wat they're for ??? plzzzzzz

  • It would be better if you talked I got lost at the end

  • That's really cool. But on your next tutorial can you show how you line the eyes with black and how you move eyebrows up and down. Thankyou

  • thank youu for mencion it =)=)

  • Thank you ! I'm so happy to learn that !

  • thanks swet heart

  • Question! I see on your layers you have something right next to the picture what is that and how do you get it?

  • I think you're talking about the Mask, You click on the rectangle with a circle inside it which is at the bottom of the layers box. I hope i got this right. =)
