Where is the "gold standard" crash test? (40% offset frontal crash against aluminium honeycomb). There are cars that LOOK great at the full width test but fail miserably at the 40% offset frontal.
@Randroide they showed it in this. is was where he said the rear wheel or wheels where up in the air. 136 is your offset test. most cars do terrible at that particular test. id say the telsa ddi, okay. not great, but ive seen mush worse.

I guess Tesla couldn't be bothered to design there own body. Pity all those batteries throw off its handling. One thing is for certian...Its much faster then an Lotus Elise (in a straight line)
James may from Top gear said it well, " the car of tomarrow will be like the car of today" Its only a matter of time before electric vehicals are able to have the same type of freedom that we have with current gas powered vehicals...and a little furthur over the horizon the source of that electrical power could one day be fully sustainable...but i doubt in my life time.
o-m-g me loves car crash tests at 30-40mph when are they going to start doing real world speeds? anyone else go 85mph on a regular basis to work? lol...
Genius how would you crash at 85 mph. Unless u are suicidal. When a crash happens usually the car in front of u is moving too. And it is not a concrete wall. IF you crash into a concrete wall strait in at 85 maybe its just Darwinism.
Not all highways have barriers separating the two sides of traffic. What about oncoming traffic on the left? or perhaps a big tree on the right? Trees can be just as strong as concrete walls.
Sure you are right; if I crash into a car going the same direction as me the crash is really only the difference in speed. You also can take into account the time I am on the brakes before the crash. That usually takes off 20mph. But in the end, don't you think crash tests should be higher than 30-40mph?
I think you're right, but increasing the crumple zone could help. That would probably make cars too big though... & they can get hit from any direction.
Either way... it'd be hard to come back from a 70mph to 0mph acceleration in 3feet.... lolz. I just think they should at least do 50mph crashes, this 38mph stuff :(
His "3-Wheel Imaginary Vehicle" is about to out-produce Tesla over the next year. He can sell his high priced toy to Arnold, but a regular Joe or Gane cannot ever hope to afford one.
Aptera has airbags, a tubular steel frame (like light aircraft and Formula 1 cars), and is very light and low-drag. Oh, and mile for mile, uses half the power of the Tesla. Aptera uses a lot of aircraft style technology, including seat belts with the airbag integrated into them.
Well this car wasnt made for that type of work. Battery technology gets better and better every year. I bet you very soon the charge time will be below 10 mins.
A friend of mine in the Napa Valley has a Toyota RAV4 EV (All Electric 100%) Made stock as an All electric, not hybrid. It has less range than the Tesla and the Rav4 only goes 80 mph.
But he still drives this thing all over the place. From Napa to Sacramento and back all the time. And it keeps up with the fast traffick on Hwy, 80 just fine.
The Tesla Roadster is going to work just fine. All you naysayers are as dumb as a bag of hammers.
True but when that gas isn't being used for the car itself we use less fuel, plus there is alternative ways to get electricity that should be widely available by the time electric would take over. Sun, Water,Wind, etc. With new technologies arising there should also be advancements in battery technology and faster ways of charging. FYI average Americans only drive 23 miles a day which is more than enough because as said before now electric cars have a range of 60-200 miles.
why pay for hydrogen which is more expensive then gas, convert it to electricity then power your car/ why not just skip all the bull shit and plug in directly.
This may stop the use of oil, but it places the load on power companies (some of the worst polluters) "Fire fueled" plants out number "Hydro" plants in the US. The batteries may be bio, but your just shifting the emissions to another source by charging them. Even if you have a Hydrogen fueled engine that extracts hydrogen from water, we will eventually run out of freash water, only 3% of Earth's water is fresh. These batteries w/ a solar charger would be the only zero emissions system.

My point is that people who use elec. car pollute just as much, if not more than eco gas cars or ones that use ULSD. Not all hydrogen fueled cars use renewable hydrogen. There is no perfect system, and there is no "zero emissions" car. All systems harm the environment in some way. This also looks like a NHTSA type test, I would like to see an IIHS type crash test on this car.
Agreed. No "0 emissions" is impossible. However, getting gasoline also needs energy, but electricity is the end of the line in the pollution, not true with gasoline. I poop on your face, sir!
Agreed. No "0 emissions" is impossible. However, getting gasoline also needs energy, but electricity is the end of the line in the pollution, not true with gasoline. I poop on your face, sir!
No thats false, electricity is produced in a controlled manner. They can control pollution much more effienctly in a electricity plant than a gas/diesel vehicle driving down the road, thats just common sense. The electric car is MUCH more efficent than any other technology to date. They know that which is why they've been withholding the technology. Check the stats on Phoenix Motorcars, its undenyable.
Despite so, the thermal efficiency of an electrical motor is infinitely better than any internal combustion engine. Electric motors are about 85-90% efficient at transforming electricity into movement. An electric generator fueled with natural gas is about 60% efficient. An internal combustion engine is about 14% efficient, in the best case.
In a modern engine 94% of the fuel is converted into energy, a little more than 75% is converted into rotational force. Even if you factor the energy needed to refine crude oil the eff. rating would be better than 14%. If you apply the amount of energy into this rating for a internal combustion engine, you have to apply it to the elec. motor also. Which would lower it's rating. 'fired' & 'nuke' power plants are less eff. than any refinery.
Nowhere near to 94% of the energy in gasoline is consumed by an internal combustion engine. Natural Gas is the fossil fuel with the greatest available energy consumption in an internal combustion engine, and it still is not 94%.
To power an electric car (or a nationwide fleet of them) it is much less carbon-dirty to use a clean coal-fired plant. Why don't you look into it even a little bit?
Even w new tech. this wouldn't work very well in the US. The amount of time to charge the car this way wouldn't work for the daily commute, it takes too long. Im not downing alt. energy. What bothers me is the attitude of people who drive these types of cars. They think that they are better than everyone else. If you plug this into household power in the US you are polluting more than you would by driving a modern eco car.
I agree about the smug attitude of many "alt energy" car owners you're wrong about everything else. First, how many people in the US drive over 200 miles a day? It takes 3.5 hours to fully charge from being fully depleted and it comes with a on-board charger to plug into a standard outlet. You're certainly not polluting more by charging since the amount of power used isn't close to the amount of gas required for the same job. The batteries are recyclable and even safe to normally dispose of.
It takes 3.5 hours to charge this car. Then it goes for about 200 miles. Are you going to drive more than 200 miles in your daily routine? Yeah enough said. Did you do any research before you claimed this car takes too long to charge?
It won't take 3.5 hours to charge this with a solar panel, like others have stated. Also 200 miles per charge is like EPA estimated fuel mileage. It's not very often seen, all that spec means is that it was probably tested hundreds of times and some of the best numbers were chosen. AGAIN I will say I'm not against this technology, it's just not the total solution that some people make it out to be. Search you tube for The G-Wiz VS the table.
Who said anything about solar panels? That isn't important go to the site it is 3.5 five hours. It is also 200 miles per charge (in fact more than that) even if it weren't do you drive 150 miles in a day? No.
Has no-one heard the warnings given out to police and fire brigade officers warning them of what to look for in an accident involving an electric car or a hybrid? On board a "normal" car (which don't automatically explode like in the movies), there's a few watts of power, if any, from the battery. In an electric or hybrid, you can have hundreds of watts...and that voltage is just waiting for some poor prick to touch the wrong bit when getting the occupants out.
In most EVs & hybrids live wires are thick, bright orange & run along the center on the car. Most also have kill switches. Training is to watch out for those wires. Electrocution risk is actually very low; risk of fire is much greater. Tesla has various protection for its battery pack that prevents battery fires. If you calculate the statistics I would bet the gas tank in a normal car is more dangerous in an accident; I have seen many cars catch fire & explode in police chase videos.
Also, this type of battery is composed of large numbers of individual cells with microcontrollers each. When a cell senses an abnormal load (one that doesn't match the electronic signals being received) it will just shut down, preventing high voltage or high current from even reaching the big wires. That is, for a properly developed battery, which I think I can assume the Tesla has.
Hey, I'm not saying it's not a great car...I'd have one in a second if I could afford it...the performance is absolutely amazing! I just wonder about crashes with electric cars. They have a lot of extra dangers.

"The G-forces on the driver were about what we expected". Unless they "expected" them to be probably pretty high...not a lot of crumple in that front end, therefore even with airbags more deceleration to the driver. "We took off a lot of gear from the back of the car"...thus making it even lighter and less "crunch" when it hit than in real life. As for batterys being safe...just be careful if you are the fireman turning up to get the occupants out...lot of wattage in there...
I'm sure the dangers of the "high wattage" insides are far less dangerous than the heat/fire/explosions of the flammable insides of a combustion engine.
yes they took alot of gear from the back but only to put monitoring equipment in and its mass was the same, make sure you know what your talking about before you make yourself look stupid again!
"i don't want to show these in public since they have a lot of violence". Exactly. Thats why the smart car crash test made me anxious. Crash tests are not amusing nor entertaining
Great video, especially the last test where they have a truck rear-end the car at 50mph, and the battery pack (which is located just forward of the rear axle) remains intact, and nothing leaks out of the batteries. Effectively busting the myth that I've heard from E.V. haters that "if an EV is in a crash that there will be battery acid everywhere" There is not even any voltage present on the car's chassis after that crash. The results look excellent.
And there's no acid in these batteries. Just tiny individual solid cells with a microcontroller in each of the few thousand cells sensing for any anomally in the load. Extremely safe, though of course if you just short cirtuit the terminals or perforate the battery pack with a metal rod, you might have some nasty arc, but nothing more serios than what you would get in a normal car.
I would like to know a crash test of this car made by EuroNCAP or IIHS... Those are at 40 MPH, and they're not doing business with a succesful result.
I'd like to see the EuroNCAP test as well. By 40 mph there is 1 3/4 times more energy to dissipate.
Then, the stiff car front-end crumples very little (maybe cos it's 30mph) which means high loads are transferred to the dummies. Again, I'd like to see dummies readings from independent organization, not a statement from company chap - these would tell you anything.

40mph? no problem, look at how much there is left to squeeze! It WILL make the 40MPH with ease compared to other vehicles of the same size!

I think that it is EuroNCAP

I'd like to see the EuroNCAP test as well. By 40 mph there is 1 3/4 times more energy to dissipate.
Then, the stiff car front-end crumples very little (maybe cos it's 30mph) which means high loads are transferred to the dummies. Again, I'd like to see dummies readings from independent organization, not a statement from company chap - these would tell you anything.
Then I'll believe in Tesla Roadster safety.

Anyway, i think this car must have at least 4 stars...

There is no EuroNCAP test for this car.

This solidifies my confidence in the chassis and crash structures that Lotus designed and are in the Elise as well as this Tesla Roadster.
