  • Absolutely genius.

  • Просто супер!!!

  • 133 find themself in the video as clients :)

  • Wow this is scary real. I am a self-employed portrait photographer. Haven't had many of these personally, but I have professional colleagues whom I have watched go through this. I know I spend a lot of time (A LOT!) educating my clients and friends about the photographic industry. Thanks for creating this video...well done!

  • This his so close to home is not even funny. I produce music for local artists with the most basic of set ups and I charge nearly nothing..yet I get so many people that still try to rip me off. And the best part is the freaking ending when an actual client tried to rip me off then came back a year later asking to borrow my gear so they can record themselves..F*******CK YOU!!!!!!!

  • This is a tough one because we want to be paid fairly for what we do but at the same time as a consumer we want to pay fairly. But what is fair? This is where sales skills come in handy. You need to show your clients why you are worth more than the cheap guy. In the end you have to be willing to say " I don't want your business. " I am in commission sales so I know the feeling. I am also a consumer that wants to save money. I don't have any problem paying for services but it has to be fair. In

  • TO ALL THE CHEAP FUCKSTICK PIECE OF SHIT SCUMBAGS OUT THERE- I HOPE YOU CHOKE TO DEATH ON THE MONEY YOU SAVE. MAJOR ASSHOLES LIKE YOU MAKE OWNING A BUSINESS A LIVING HELL. YOU CHEAP FUCKS HAVE THE FUCKING NERVE TO TRY AND GRIND SOMEONE INTO THE GROUND ABOUT PRICE. IF THE SITUATION WERE REVERSED, YOU WOULD FILL YOUR DIAPER WITH YOUR TEMPER TANTRUM. DO THE WORLD A FAVOR AND GO FUCK YOURSELVES BEFORE YOU INFECT THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY WITH YOUR FRUGALITY. TAKE YOUR SKINFLINT BULLSHIT AND SHOVE IT!

  • i have experienced being shat on for 20 years as a headhunter for firms in tokyo,

clients ask us to work on spec and we do, sometimes we find out they didn't have authorization, positions were frozen, they decided to hire internally or other reasons,

candidates use us to compete against their other job offers, other headhunters,

lie on their resumes, and so on, but when it works we are happy all the way to the bank :-)

  • This is a day in my life as a Freelance Makeup Artist ... :/

  • why is plants that go bad related to this? fucking youtube......

  • Im dealing right now with a client who made me work and didnt even pay. This is so unfair!

  • 132 people want something cheap and don't like this video:)

  • This is so perfect. I've dealt with every single one of these characters in the past, it put me off of commission work for years. Some of those, word-for-word.

  • Love, Love LOOOVE this!!! A fantastic analogy, biig THANK YOU!!! I love my job but sheesh, I feel like some people don't understand we make our living this way:)

  • WOW! That was absolutely, amazingly, fantastic! Sooooo true!

  • "this is not a challenge, this is an opportunity" wtf?! :D HAHAA

  • How about "If you can do it for less, I know a lot of other people I can send your way"

  • The only thing missing is "Just think about all the exposure you'd get from this job! Your image will be seen by thousands of potential clients, which is great advertising. I mean, really, you should be paying us!"

  • that was awesome, if we could all just work with each other then the world would be a better place

  • Very good!

  • How about the friend that comes to your restaurant, leaves without paying, then tells you your steak sucked.

  • priceless and so true

  • *Facepalm*

  • Been there. Had clients do this to me. OMG and they all think that this is the first time you've ever been approached about working for free -- and it's referred to as an opportunity. Just say no!!

  • Welcome to the actual state of TV post-production in the USA 2011, done as retail parables. thank you "banks that cant fail", for stopping all loans to the creative producers that hire all the free-lancers in the country, so that we have become their new de facto "banks" (ie, 180 days until we are paid, if ever).

  • It'll look great on your steak showreel.

  • We have a roster of restaurants that we frequently attend, and we're considering adding YOUR restaurant to our roster.

What can you show us today that might encourage us to put our business your way?

We were thinking more along the lines of the 'Steak' route with this job...

If you can just quickly cook us up a few Steak variations then we'd be able to put a more concrete figure on the budget we have available.

It's a very straightforward Steak job. Just do something really simple.

  • ohhh, it is so common for customers to ask their service providers to offer freebies! Next time I get a freebie-beggar, I'll definitely have this vid in mind!

  • I got here from LightStalking. Wow, they should put a photographer in there

  • lol

  • HAHAHA awesomeeee :D

  • This is an awesome video. My roommate is a freelance illustrator, so I'm somewhat aware of the crazy things clients end up doing.

  • i make music, and idk if i can sell yet, or what would be reasonable rates, would anyone here mind looking at my channel and seeing what you think?

  • A joke is better when you kind of, repeat it a bunch, but you...you know, repeat it, in different ways, but it's the same joke

  • great video! thanks for posting. a message much needed!!

  • I will be watching this video everyday just to keep me Honest about the value of my work. '

  • Insurance companies should be restricted by law from hurting businesses with this rediculous truth about how they operate.

  • Love it!

  • That will be £500 for the simple logo. (Me)

    "THAT'S WAY TO STEEP!" (Them)

"Okay, I do have a cheaper-in-the-short-term package with this contract." (Me, handing them the contract.)

"£60 initial fee for labour and 5p royalty on every product sold or advertisment thereafter, that utilizes the logo or derivatives thereof... Errm, that, sounds reasonable?" (Them)

Later, after consulting with an advisor.

"We will just pay the $500."

    "Yeah I thought as much."

  • Maulum 81...I loved when you said..we survive on rainbows and unicorn farts ...ahahahah!!!

  • "I need a temporary check please." - "Ok temporary checks are a dollar each." - "WHAT?! I'LL JUST GO TO THE OTHER BETTER SUPER DUPER BANK WHERE THEY HAND OUT FREE CHECKS THEN." - "Ok, have a nice day." - "IT'S CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE." - "Ok, have a nice day." "I'M GOING NOW" - "Ok.... have a nice day :P"

  • I had a client for whom I did product photography, photo editing (basic like cropping and creative like changing colors or objects and compositing elements to digitally create new products) and page layout of a digital catalog and 50+ line sheets. After her 4th round of revisions (I do 1 round free and charge for all client requested revisions after the first one,) she asked me to put everything into a Word Doc so she could do the edits herself! I told her I couldn't...she didn't understand why.

  • @ahostofangels Oh boy u got no idea how this one is popular...

  • "or few hundred Euros in 5 minutes"

Think "attorney at law." And like your example, I don't like their prices. But, sometimes (fortunately on rare occasions:) I need them.

We'll just have to disagree with each other.

  • THIS shit so true it dose happen to me some times at work

  • My story: Got an offer from my webdesigner to update some stuff on my Homepage. Each update between €75 and €300.

So I searched the web and tried to do it myself. It took me about 50 minutes to do it. 40 minutes to find out how and where to get em, 10 to make a backup and 10 to do ALL the updates!

I expect my webdesigner to know how to update the stuff. So I had to pay him some hundred Euros for 10minutes work.

That's why we customers feel like get robbed - and right so.

  • @ElidasJoshua You have to recognize: There isn't any update as easy as you've explained. Sometimes it happens, that something that looks very tiny and easy will take more about more hours. It's because there are so many people working on updates of your CMS for example and than there are very small changes in your software that can get you lose a whole day. So just take about 75-300€ for the update that takes 10 minutes, and the same for the update that'll take 6 hours....

  • @ElidasJoshua But the customer isn't in the Web-design field, that's why you are a customer. It didn't take him 10 minutes to learn how to do what he did for you and it didn't cost him $100 either, he had to pay more in tuition to learn how to do this in school, and over time he is knowledgeable to do it in 10 minutes. Some with an illusionist your not paying for the 2 min illusion your paying for the custom built routine and hrs of practice involved to preform this 2 min illusion.

  • @ElidasJoshua If you have budget problems, then you should do it yourself. You mirror the couple in the restaurant example in the video. It just beef, right? Lets see, a business (or an independent contractor) has the following expenses: employee salaries employee benefits (health, vacation, sick leave...) utilities such as electric, internet... training expense insurance (liability, workman's comp, E&O) software expenses hardware expenses other equipment expenses travel expense etc.
  • @vicorjh Well I'll answer you as well als everybody else here: I don't mind paying for stuff - it's about the relation of paying and the reward I get.

He is selfemployed - working from his house - so not much cost, but even though I would have ordered a company for it, the relation doesn't hold up anyway. It's like you tell me an hour of work on my car would cost €500,00 bucks - nobody is gonna pay this! It's just insane! But here we can compare! The problem about the webdesign stuff is that

  • @ElidasJoshua But, it sounds as though you have a problem with this one guy. You did the right thing by determining that your time is worth spending it on finishing the project yourself. And you've learned something, too.

Many businesses do exactly what you've done. In time, the over charging vendor will go out of business if his rates are too high.

So what are you concerned with? You didn't loose any money. You didn't try to run a scam on the vendor.

    You did good overall, right?

  • @vicorjh we don't know what we get and if it's worth the price. Like I said I am sure there are other web designers out there doing the same stuff for a piece of the money he was charging. But if I didn't try myself I wouldn't know if his work was worth the money.

And with all the stuff of education etc. etc. - well that holds true for almost any job. But none of them - if your are not an famous artist or somebody like that - will earn a few hundred Euros in 5 Minutes.

  • @ElidasJoshua

500 to work on my car? Does that include the cost of the building, the cost of the equipment, the cost of the training (to do it right), the parts needed for the repair?

Or is that just the labor rate++?

This is the cost of business. A person want a service of a business, they have to pay the vendor his rate.

Or, you have options as you've noted

    1) Do it yourself

    2) Find another vendor that is more in line with your budget needs

    3) Find another option to achieve the same goal

  • @vicorjh Include everything but the parts you need. I think you get my point. It's about charging too high fees of somebody how doesn't know better. I had a problem with this guy because I considered him my friend.

And you are right: I don't have to do business with him anymore. :D

  • @ElidasJoshua I am a freelancer, and just like you said you expect your web designer to know how to update the stuff. Exactly! You are not paying for 10 minutes of work, you are paying for his KNOWLEDGE!

  • @kgarland2007 Well right, but I don't know anybody earning €750,00 (sum of all updates) within 10 minutes... and I bet a doctor had a way longer education. I also studied and got my master but beside some managers of the biggest companies in my country I haven't met anybody earning that much.

So it's not about that he charged me for it - but with all the education stuff etc. €100,00 to €200,00 should be way enough for 10 minutes.

  • @kgarland2007 Especially if I, a noob, was able to learn it within two hours. There can't be much education in it :D

  • @ElidasJoshua Learning the tools is not learning the trade. We go to school and spend years doing this work so that we can make effective, eye-catching designs, for which there is a large market. Not everyone is at the same skill level in design, but just learning how to piece things together in photoshop doesn't make a sophisticated or potent business card, logo, or advertisement. If you were able to do this yourself, you'd probably not have wanted to pay someone for it in the first place.

  • @littlestbroccoli Well not true. I paid him a lot of money in the beginning but really started questioning his prices. Guys, you can charge whatever you want, but you shouldn't wonder if a lot of people are not willing to pay your prices if we feel the effort is just not worth the price.

  • Yeah...Cow! ^^

  • How many people hear this on a regular basis "it's a great opportunity"

  • Yep... painfully true... too bad for us small-business owners!

  • Im a pro photographer. Sometimes I get told...it will be great exposure/advertising for you..pffft!!

  • @brettnaseby I'm a photographer too. I get this about once a month

  • amazed that there are pieces of shit that actually disliked this video.

  • Wow, it's like every f'd up conversation i've ever been through with wanna be film makers is in this!

  • thumbs up if u ever had a shitty client who tells u they only hav a shitty amount for you to a job that involves a shitload of work/skills, AND ends it with "it's really not that hard, i've done a bit of editing myself too, and i only have this amount for you."

well then do it yourself then! ^.^

  • gives a whole new meaning to "scope creep!"

  • Roll-over the cost of the highlights because I want it but it's not in the budget - that is SO true!

  • Where's the part where the lady getting her hair done tells the hair stylist that it's "free advertising" for him???

  • can we forward this video to ALL THE CLIENTS !

  • @emforty2 they would ask "what's wrong with that?"

  • well there are too many people who work for basically nothing..

if you want to make a living you need to do better work than them.. or simply get another job if you dont like the pay. nobody has a birth right to work as an artist lol

  • @BadWithNames123 The problem with that is, just because an artist is underpaid, it doesn't mean they're a bad artist. They might be doing great quality work, but they're underpaid because people assume art has no value and therefore think they can take advantage of artists they commission. Art is a viable job, and it would pay just fine if clients weren't always backing out on payments. For other goods and services, backing out on payment is called "theft."

  • @CaptainTQuirk the problem is that artists have no clue about business.. thats why they are constantly taken advantage of..

because they cant say a simple no to bad underpaying clients.. it is their own fault : P

  • @BadWithNames123 The video isn't about artists who are unable to turn down a bad deal. It's about clients' unrealistic expectations. How would any self-employed person respond to clients like that? Besides, it's harder to ask for decent compensation when you're on your own. When I worked in retail, I had a customer complain to me that the prices were too high, and I told them it was head office's decision. An artist can't do that because they're alone, and clients don't value art.

  • @CaptainTQuirk you have no clue..

why do clients offer such ridiculous prices (and by the way.. only the wrong clients do) because they know the photographer will accept them.. : P

  • @BadWithNames123 I agree with you that it's a problem, but it's a cycle. Young artists are told that no one values art, so they are easily coerced into keeping their prices low, which makes them more likely to be hired than an experiences businessperson/artist who knows their worth. Therefore, those who want to run a fair business have a harder time finding work because clients are reinforced that art is worthless and should be cheap.

  • @BadWithNames123 Obviously not everyone is accepting it. Otherwise, there wouldn't be this outrage. Artists KNOW it's wrong to take a bad deal. The question is: why art? Why do some clients consider it okay to try to cheat their graphics person, but wouldn't try that with their accountant or marketing person or supplies vendor? What is it about art that people think it should be cheap/free? And, as an aside, saying I have no clue doesn't make your point any more convincing.

  • @CaptainTQuirk - Clients consider it "okay" to cheat graphics people because it's ALL ABOUT PERCEPTION. What is the perception of accountants and lawyers? They are not CHEAP, they are very EXPENSIVE. Therefore, clients go in with the notion that they will have to pay money and don't think twice about it.

Somewhere along the line people got the idea that design/graphics work was very cheap (and this notion is only reinforced by craiglist and indians overseas) and it spawned from there.

  • @erupt2001 I agree with you there, but what can be done about it? An artist who wants fair compensation for their labour is considered greedy. It's not right, and I've wondered a lot about how to help (as I know a lot of artists who are constantly cheated by clients who, after the fact, decide they'll just take the product and not pay). Hence my frustrations.

  • @BadWithNames123 *In the second comment, I meant to say EXPERIENCED artist know it's wrong to take a bad deal. As opposed to the young ones starting out. Hence the problem.

  • @BadWithNames123 Many artists and designers in this situation freelance, as in, they either do it on the side, or it's their only income and they're not supported by a company or some other kind of income. It's not easy to turn down paid work, even if you know it's a crappy offer, because you have bills to pay and need to eat, so because you don't have much of a safety net, you end up doing underpaid work. Most people don't see creative works as something with much value too.

  • Awesome. But they forgot the part when the diner tells the chef that cooking is fun for him, and he shouldn't be charging for having fun.

  • I'll gladly pay you Tuesday, for a $19.99 DVD today!

  • @BeranekDesign Ha ha ha! I own BossDVD.Com and totally GET YOU!

  • Too accurate.

  • Bravo!

  • "cow"...brilliant

  • Fellow designers, just remember one word: contract. Which should be drawn up for you by a lawyer. for more info, google "fuck you pay me" it's the best few minutes you'll ever spend

  • Client: "Just send us the InDesign file and we'll do the work." Me: "Do you have CS5.5?" Client: I have Indesign 2, InDesign is InDesign, it'll work." Me: "No it won't, and do you even know how to use style sheets?" Client: "Style sheets? Are you saying I have no style?" Me: "I'll drop the InDesign file on my FTP since it is, with all the art packaged, over 1GB and only after you pay in full." Client: "Just email it as a Jpeg, we'll do the rest." Me: "Ok." ---- IDIOTS!
  • @thunktank rofl

  • @thunktank That actually made me laugh out loud. I hope they enjoyed the jpg they asked for.

  • I love this video, if for anything because it's what I hear so often, that and 'We love your work, but we can't pay you now - but once 'product' is released and it takes off we'll give you a percentage of the profits! Because you obviously can survive on rainbows and unicorn farts, and bills can be paid with wishes and dreams!'

  • @Malum81 LMAO unicorn farts... I'm quoting you!!!

very true I was a freelance architect for sometime and man if I ever got a dollar for every evasive client I would've probably made some money...

  • You're just were missing someone saying "I'll tell all my friends about how awesome you are and you'll get lots of business!"

  • I'm a photographer, hubby is a wed developer...been there ::eye roll::

  • "I don't have any money, but it will look great on your reel."

  • watch?v=4V7wjqHjE1M&feature=related (THE REAL WORLD)

  • This video sums up my frustration with being a media freelancer for the past year or so. The worst is when they ask you how much you want to be paid. I always get scared and lowball myself to try and get the job, and they usually don't call back anyway.

  • @ken72385 you're singlehandedly destroying your industry. that is not a joke.

  • Been taken by the goyim as well

  • @polsktralia As a Jew, I normally would take offense, yet somehow I don't. However, I firmly believe that all nationalities have cheap b*****ds floating around.

  • @rafihecht - Good you didn't take offense, as it was a stereotype/ joke. I have been to Israel twice and have no problems with the Jews.

  • @polsktralia A wink or smiley face goes a long way to adding the "joking" to a text comment.

  • as web developer, I've been so much time in similar situation, so this video is apolutely true!

  • OMG SO TRUE!!!

  • This meal will look great on your showreel.

  • brilliant; people that wants high value products at a cheap price will receive always the baddest one, paying double of a middle one; is much easier to pay the right price of what we need.

  • I have a client that still owes me $8,900...for work I did 2 years ago.

  • @rjones6801 For that amount of money, you obviously wrote and sign a contract...right?

  • @douvil They were going to claim bankruptcy, so I've been riding it out and getting small amounts here and there. I'd rather get the full amount over time than a fraction all at once.

  • @rjones6801 I'm assuming you don't have a contract which you didn't hire a lawyer to make and didn't go to court over this because you're ranting about it on youtube? live and learn, do the above. don't get screwed again my friend. (your comment says more about you than your client hon)

  • @aeonjoey I was collecting on it a little at a time. I recently found out they claimed bankruptcy though. Like you said, live and learn. It was the first time I was screwed over in this business and it will be the last. I had another client try to pull the same shit last year, so I called, and called, and called, and emailed, and called, and called, until they got sick of me and paid up. It's ridiculous that I have to do that.

  • WELL DONE! Unbelievably true yet when it comes to their services...."if you give me a discount on this one I will give you all my business and my friends business too"...ROFLMAO

  • Hmmm very true for photographers too....

  • :)) funny, :))

  • I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!

  • Google the petition regarding the Dept of Interior asking for designers to work on spec and be paid far below the market rate for a logo. The Department of the Interior... this is not a 6th grade poster contest, feds, it is a job for a professional USA designer who should be compensated fairly for the value.

  • @alicecolleenflynn republicans believe unions and professional organizations like AIGA are bad for the country because workers' rights are 'bad', our vote means a lot.

  • @aeonjoey I agree.

  • @aeonjoey I agree.

  • OMG I Get this everyday!

  • Ah, Aquage products in that salon. Love it! I live for that company!!

  • Like a trip down Memory Lane. A bad one. Everything about this (very well acted) sketch is true except the people involved are obviously much nicer and cleverer than the ones I had to deal with. But it's over. Now the world owns computers and everyone is a graphic designer and or artist as soon as they plug it in. Me? I do something else now, happily.

  • @TheRobbex You said a mouthful, "can you send the indesign file in a format I can play with in MS office?" is just said too damn often.

  • @aeonjoey I think you meant this for someone else.

  • HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! LOL! This is funny.

  • Irony is that the little advertisement below is from 99design.com a crowd sourcing site that is slowly ruining the design industry.

  • Anyone who has ever owned or managed a business of any nature (We're an HVAC Contracting Company) can appreciate this video. We shared this with some fellow business owners and they all loved it. Great job!

  • OH MY GOD That was awesome!

  • I've been working as a web & graphic designer for 20 years, and this video is SO appropriate. Absolutely hilarious.

  • If you do this for us at a discount (ear-bleeding, bottom of the barrel price), you can put your link on our site and it will get you tons of exposure!

    -OR-

We just need someone to do this web design for us for (little to nothing) and then we plan to bring you on board with revenue share of sales of the goods from the site. (YEAH, right, LOL!)

  • lol I just wish clients in Craigs List would have to see this before talking to a Designer.

  • Sheesh. Nothing annoys so much than having clients say "teach us so we can do it on our own in house". Is there anyway of having all clients view this video?

  • Ironically you can barter for almost anything like this in many countries in the world.

  • To all those saying that this kind of client behavior is related to today's economy, I assure you that it is not. I've been freelancing for 25 years and every one of these (hilariously presented) excuses has been there all along. Sadly, it's nothing new at all.

  • @fastlearner I can vouch for this. Though for me things like FCP have made these conversations come up more frequently.

  • @fastlearner Indeed, nothing makes me want to punch someone in the nuts like hearing "Show me how you did this" for the billionth time.

  • @RvLeshrac "you want me to show you HOW to do this? No problem, I do offer one to one personal training but at $500 per hour with a minimum 5 hour committment, cash up front. Thankyou." *Bif fat fucking cheerful smile in their face*

  • Guy in video rental store:

"If you give me this video for $7 I'll recommend you to all my friends [...and they'll expect to get it for $7 as well].

  • It's this kind of "modern business" that is takin' us down... ^^

  • So sad, so true...

  • Moments after the final scene....

    Black guy: Call the police.

  • @Tekwarthewolf Police arrest black guy. *sigh*

  • @theconservativelib Psh, hes obviously a serial killer. Look at that look of pure hate on his face. Thats the face of a killer. He wants to murder the idiots.

  • @Tekwarthewolf You think that's cow they were eating!?!

  • ....so much truth is depressing....

  • another case: "oh, we thought you were giving us the picture for free (for the cover of a book) cause you are a friend of the writer (that's true but i don't work for free)..." without telling me a word, just finding my job already printed...

  • @zoeworld I'm guessing that they are unfamiliar with the old adage "Friends are friends and business is business."

  • I wished I would have seen this before becoming a Software Sales Account Executive...I would have stayed a pre-sales engineer

  • ...but all you really have to do is just make a few clicks on the computer to change to our new company logo, right? So why do I have to pay for that?

This video hurts to watch because it is so true!

  • "please send me back the file i emailed you, it's the only copy i have!" - true story

  • Comment removed

  • @did4h2k LMAO!! Say what?!?! The truth is sometimes funnier than fiction! :)

  • "We've got a lot of work for you coming up... "

    Just no money.
