  • I did a lumbar puncture on my cat during med school. She can only walk sideways now.

  • Does it feel good after all is done?

  • wish mine had been done that fast...

  • welcome to quickie mart... slushie machine are down today

  • Don't forget to drink the spinal fluid...

  • mine still hurts when i watch videos like this lol

  • he says "the" very cool like

  • What age do you get this

  • That's the anaesthatis way of giving a spinal. Most of the rest of us also use a local anaesthetic before introducing the LP needle

  • the needle didn't hurt very much but the electrical shock feeling that went down my legs as they were doing it was not fun...not worth getting this done unless you REALLY need it, not pleasant at all!

  • I've done this so many times, at the end I haven't felt any big pain... I had a surgery of neurocytoma and every morning liquor was collected under a scar location. So they had to do a LP every day so I won't get a hydrocephalus. This don't hurt so bad when you have a good doctor, good needle (there are several sizes)...

  • Why the FUCK can't they put you to sleep?

  • @kirikakirikakirika im sure there is a strong reson for that

  • these post spinal headaches can be cured by injecting caffeine into the site of puncture. other analgesics will only increase pain and cause nausea

  • @tiapon correction: *not at the site of puncture...but INTRAVENOUS caffeine injections

  • im pretty sure the current medical system is based on fkin up the patience with cruel tests and horrible treatments, so we forget about the real bad :/

  • Has anyone ever had burning sensations in their limbs or head after having a lumbar puncture? I had one done about 9 months ago and ever since, I keep having burning sensations throughout my body. Mainly my head but sometimes legs and arms. The pain comes and goes. If anyone is familiar with this please let me know.

  • I had this done a few days ago, i'm so glad they got the hole first go, they told me it could be really painful and I was freaking out a little. I didn't even really notice the needle go in, the anesthetic hurt more. Turned out I did have meningitis, so didn't notice any after effects of this, just the horrible meningitis symptoms.

  • i had this done yesterday, the procedure itself wasnt to bad and didnt hurt all that much but i feel really drowsy sick and weak today, been told to drink plenty of water though.

  • Unless you are pregnant, you should be getting this done with a fluoroscopy machine which takes the guess work out. Had it done today, felt like a bee sting for 20 seconds which was caused by the local anesthetic, then I felt nothing after that. Painless. No spinal headache, nothing. Laid flat on my stomach the whole 30 minutes until it was done, laid on my side 30 more minutes in waiting room, then went home. Drink lots of water, you'll be fine!!!

  • I have had 3 and about to have a fourth one and there giving them to me because of the headaches I get. And honestly I think they suck. And they take more than 5 minutes and I have to lay down for 2 or more hours.

  • The lumbar punctures I've seen done use a fluoroscope to assist in guiding the needle. Takes a lot of the guess work out of it.

  • codeine 30 mg the my mom took it from me she said its a drug

will i know its a drug do u think its food

she said u don't need it ( i was like oh u r a doctor now even the dam doctor know what he have done to me give it back ) then she said when u feel a real crushing pain come and i will give u >>> REAL CRUSHING

  • it was horrible experience i had it done yesterday

first they inject me with anesthetics witch they say its the painful step

then i was happy it was parable pain then the stupid ( consultant doctor ) injected me with that long needle for 4 times coz he didn't hit the right place dam him when i lyed flat 4 an hour they said ok go back home now and i was like (am not going home am not gonna move an inch am in pain )they gave me voltarin shoot and send me home with >>>

  • I had one done yesterday. It didn't hurt that much and it didn't last long either. 5 minutes for the procedure, then 1 hour lying down, then I could go home. I don't have headaches or other side effects so far. I guess the pain depends on the following things: 1. the type of needle used (modern, more expensive needled are thinner and hurt less), 2. if you get a local anesthetic and 3. the skill of the doc.

  • i've had one.....didn't hurt, just feels uncomfortable and weird

  • i had to get three done in short amount of time because i had pseudotumor cerebri and it was not fun my back was sore for weeks i had headaches from my illness for about a month to a month and two weeks it was very bad

  • I remember when I had this done.. I had meningitis which sucked because I had a headache for about 9 days it felt as if I was going to die :(

  • Great intonation.

  • Oh i had a horrible experience with my lumber puncture, i felt pain in my spine a little during the procedure, then i was lying flat for four hours then sent home, an hour later i had excrutiating pain in my lower back and legs i could barely walk then the next day came the horrific headache with vomiting everytime i sat up of stood up, i was readmitted to hospital for loads of intravenous fluids, thankfully they helped but i would never have one again

  • Nice video

  • jesus christ is truth

  • I had one these bugger's done 13th December 2010 - I hear alot people saying oh it doesn't hurt just a sharp scratch no it does hurt!!! rather badly!... Never having one again never ever!!!!!

  • Just adding my two cents in case there is anyone here reading this knowing they will have to get an LP done. I had one done a couple days ago because of suspected meningitis; it definitely hurt, but it wasn't as excruciating as I had feared based on what I hard heard from other people. It's painful, yes, but I wasn't crying the entire time or shouting in pain. There were few yelps, but all in all, if I had to get another one, I know I could do it.

  • made it look worser n more painful than ever.... :-(

  • it hurts so bad! i had this done 4 times! my back still hurts x

  • I had this done when I was 15. they thought I had meningitis, it turned out I just had a massive migraine. The worst part was whe they said "this may hurt a bit... hold him down" which now I understand was to stop some kind of pressure build up. Still scared the shit out of me.

  • Is the area usually anesthetized? Because I'm supposed to have one done to test for pseudotumor cerebri and I'm honestly terrified.

  • @audreylynnshepherd yesthey put an needle in the area to numb the part where they will do the lumbar puncture! believe me i have had this done 4 times! x

  • This sucks, had one of these done and it caused a leak, couldn't stand up for a few days... Had to have another one done to get it patched, and it was very painful both times. Screw this crap.

  • ....than the previous one. Shortly after pulling out the 2nd injection, he stated he was done and told me to lie down as the LP was over. He actually lied as the 2nd injection was the actual spinal tap. Other than being longer and more pressure, I had no idea the 2nd injection was the Spinal Tap.

If I can get through this with all the shaking and sleepless nights leading up to the day of the procedure, then so can anyone else. I would not hesitate to get this done again if needed

  • Look this procedure looks frightening and despite having one myself this video is hard to watch so I understand the fear. However the actual procedure was near painless and in fact I had more discomfort getting my recent Tetnus shot (honest).

I'm a wimp with medical procedures and constantly reminded the DR of this. He stuck the Lidocaine in and after some poking, then stated he needed to place the Lidocaine in deeper and did a 2nd injection which was in my back longer than .......continued

  • OWWWWWWWWWW

OW OW OW OW OW OW OW

it just hurts by watching it

  • they performed the LP with the patient sat up?!

errr... and if they pass out?!

lie them on a hard flat surface on their side, the space between the spinous processes is also increased with the patient hugging their knees to their chest

  • My poor poor friend.

She has to suffer through this every few months. They must inject her in the spine in order to keep her body from collapsing. Makes me want to cry sometime. :'(

  • Babies do have high white cell counts on there DOB. I had a baby with a high white cell count of a band nutrophil of 70% with toxic changes on her DOB. Although there was no proof of infection. She had Iv antibiotics started on DOB,23-28% 02 blow into a humidicrib. Without the use of a vent/cpap/cannula. High white cell count not present after DOB. She had 5 days of Iv antibiotics & test results kept coming back as inconlcusive test results. Thank gosh she was stable & never needed a spinal tap

  • i had this done becuase i kept having head aches i had it dont last sunday

  • This procedure is one of the most unpleasant feelings I ever had... It took only 30 seconds from the start to cold sweat dripping from my nose. My foot started jerking because the doctor hit a nerve or something. It is not as painful as it is simply increadibly unpleasant. And yet it is painful.

  • This guys staccato speaking is annoying

  • im not a doctor but i like that thing : )

  • very informative. i got used to the lumbar punctures after the first. feel free to check out what i'm pretty sure was my final in patient lumbar puncture. if you're gonna have this procedure done just remember it only takes a few minutes and if you're anxious ask for a sedative. also, afterwards lay down flat on your back for at least an hour

    or so

  • Saw this being done today...without the anesthesia. The patient lifted 2 nurses and a lab tech off of himself cause it hurt so bad, though according to the lab tech its not supposed to hurt that much even without the anesthesia...somehow though I think even though that region is less innervated it'd still hurt a whole lot.

  • OUCH

  • the accents are funny..."lumbaaa punctaaaa"

  • Just had this done, simple and virtually painless. In and out in 15 minutes tops. Woo.

  • This is kinda funny dont you think "Learn the correct way to perform a lumbar Puncture." hahaha like if a doctor thats gonna sleep your legs is watching this in front of you while poking you with a niddle, would't you shoot shit on his face out of panic?.

  • @JohnSmith1101 oh honey what the fuck is a "niddle"???? And exactly what is ""if a doctor thats gonna sleep your legs" (I never had a doctor sleep my legs" are you dyslexic????

  • I had this done last night at the ER. They thought I had meningitis. I got the anesthetic and I barely felt that. The actual needle didn't hurt, it felt like someone was pushing really hard on my back. They told that there aren't a lot of nerves down there so it wouldn't hurt as bad. I think the IV hurt more. Now afterward I had to lie on my back still for an hour. Advice: Stay still in the position. And definitely ask a lot of questions. & before standing take your time.

  • Comment removed

  • Sorry about your experience. Headache is common if the lowered CSF pressure is not countered by lying down.Thats THE only post procedure advice anyone really needs, i guess.

Lie down for a day or so.

Most people do understand other things like keeping the puncture area clean and dry.

  • @medicaleducation The recommendation is supine postition for 1-2 hours. Not more, not less. Post LP headache is poorly understood.

  • I got one of these done, it didn't hurt until my hip started spaziming. Doctor said it was normal, and even though it hurt a little and was beyond uncomfortable, it didn't hurt until I got the lumbar puncture headache. I was not able to function for over a week until I got the epidural blood patch. If anyone ever has to get one of these, no matter what the doctor says, stay laying down for a little while afterwards, my doctor didn't tell me to do that and i would have been fine if I did.

  • Also, my back was really sore the next 2 days. But it was all worth it for the peace of mind of knowing that nothing is wrong with you. :)

  • I had this done about a week and a half ago, except I was laying on my side. The worst part was the anesthetic... you feel that. But it is a small pinch and a little bit of a burn. Nothing major. I didn't even realize when he has started the actual puncture. I thought he was still prepping the area. Then the doctor told me he had drawn half of what he needed already. I was like "What? You already started?" Didn't hurt at all, and I am a total wimp when it comes to pain. :)

  • Had one done today..Is a bit unpleasant and painful at times, but nothing that you can't put up with...Mine took about 40 minutes, as they had trouble getting it in the correct position and through thick back ligaments..If you are old, young or not very muscular it is easier and less painful to get the needle through the back ligaments - that is what the neurologist told me today..

  • Ive had one. Not to bad tbh. Im very musculy so took 15 attemps for first one! Why did you have to have one? x

  • My 4 day old daughter with normal blood test results, normal tests, no abormal white cell counts, no toxic changes, no identifable infections, had to have a iv inserted again for a 5th day of antibiotics, failed iv sticks made her scream & thrash almost had her ending up with a scalp iv, they said it was kinder then thigh injections, but they went with thigh injections after they guilted us into accepting a scalp iv for her. Im suprised a spinal tap was never offered next to rule out infection.

  • Had one this morning, no side effects :D

  • I had one of those, and ill tell u- it messed me up for life! It was the most painful thing i have ever been through. They HELD ME DOWN while they stuck the damn needle into my spine. But, i had meningitis, so i guess it was ok... lol But my back and legs are still numb all the time.

  • my son had this done when he was 3 months old for suspected meningitis. he didnt have it in the end though, just a bad viral infection and flu.

  • i had one, agaed 15, the touched me left leg nerves and i find it very hard to run, just even short distnaces, 4 weeks on, as i get shooting pains up my leg and back. it was not that the op. is really painful i think it has a lot to do with you imagining what is happening, but it really helps, theywere able to diagnose meningites for me , :)

  • Just had one yesterday.. it was a little rough but if its going to help find a cure for me il do whatever it takes

  • I have this scheduled for Monday, and I'm cancelling! What if they paralyze you? If the needle touches your spinal cord can't it paralyze your lower body?

  • lol, that won't happen. you spinal cord is encased within a lot of layers. once you hit the subarachnoid space, there a pop indicating that you've gotten far enough. thats when doctors stop. You still have the pia matter covering your spinal cord if anything, so it wudn't be dangerous at all. Painful maybe, but certainly not dangerous. Did you end up getting one done, after all?

  • Hope you didn't cancel, you pansy.

  • Read the newer comments and you will know why I didn't go through with this. Get a life loser instead of attacking people on youtube.

  • Cool story. bro

  • I have to get one too, and im wondering the same thing, they dont put the needle into your spinal cord but i do hear that paralysis is a known risk, can someone plz shed some light on this concern!!!

  • I just got one done Wednesday Night. I see your comment was made 2 weeks ago - don't know if you've been through it already yet or not. But I was very very nervous before they did it; because they made it sound so complicated and risky. It was very easy-going and worth the peace of mind knowing I didn't have meningitis. - The worse that happened, ironically was a headache.

  • @Evoleht does it really hurt??

  • Well the anesthesia is what you have to worry about but just so you won't worry I'll let you know what to expect. It feels just like any other needle, but has it goes in and they inject the anesthesia it feels like a pinch and like a burn - like someone lit a match and is putting the fire not on you but REAL close to your skin. After that you have nothing to worry about all it will feel like is someone pushing their thumb up against you

  • I just got back from hospital this morning from having one done!

The damn doctor couldn't find the correct point to insert the needle & kept scaping the needle against the bone! After 12 attempts she finaly realised she didn't know what she was doing & called for the senior doctor to help who got it done in one go. My back & head still hurt!

  • Mine was preformed sitting up hunched over the meal tray cart thing they have in all the rooms with a pillow. I've had 5 LP's so far and the hunching over is much less painful and easier to reach the CSF then being in the fetal position on a bed.

  • I've had 9 done in one year. (About every 6-8 weeks) The first one was done at a local hospital in the ER. BAAAD experience. They told me numbing it would be more sticks, and it hurt just as bad, so I declined. DON'T ever do that. The other ones were done through fluroscopy and were not bad. Just pressure, and a little burning from the local. I get very sick after a spinal tap, for about 3 days. Extreme nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness and VERY lathargic. Not that common in most.

  • I have IH (Intercranial Hypertension), despite meds, my pressures keep getting to high. (next step is a shunt) But I think they sound and look much more painful then they actually are. To think about it is very scary, but after every one that I've had a local with, afterwards, I thought it was not that bad. I just worked myself up each time. Xanax helps. PS: I could NOT watch the video! ;) lol I have to have another one in two days.

  • I had this done and it hurt so bad!

  • I've had 2 of these done. The 1st time at a local hospital, horrible experience. The 2nd time done at the university of kentucky, barely felt a thing, just a lil pressure. No headache afterwards. They tell you ahead of time to lay flat for a few hours afterwards in order to avoid headache/sickness.

  • what were the main differences between the 2? i have to have this done Jan 3 and i'm freaking out, don't want to end up paralyzed or something...

  • Dont worry mate. uive had 2 befor and i have an extremely muscly back do i had to be under general anasthetic the first time then the 2nd i was awake and they got it first time.I have intercranial pressure hence why i hadmine done. Its more uncomfortable than hurt and you want to hollow your back in. So dont worry! Good luck and comment my profile how you get on! Reply please. x

  • ouch it looks just as painful as when i got it done! I had such a horrible headache afterwards! I also had a super high fever and was throwing up...... i never want to get this done again!

  • A headache is the commonest aftereffect of this important procedure. Weren't you warned?

  • yes but it didnt matter whether or not the procedure was done. I had a headache before and then after it, the headache was worse.

  • Possibly meningitis?

    Hope you feel fine now.

I wouldn't really want ANYONE to have to undergo this / any surgical procedure.

  • Nope. Muliple sclerosis. I have a second opinion doctor appointment tomorrow where hopefully they can either diagnose me or say im healed. I agree! If you can avoid going through this pain by doing something else, take it! Its horrible!

  • @sassyluvsNS i had the same problem. bad headache before, worse headache after my spinal tap. and terrible pain at the sight of puncture

  • I had this done few days ago. Comparing to my excruciating headache (suspected meningitis) i seriously didnt feel a thing!! They couldve done it twice and i wouldve not noticed :)

  • isnt the best level between L4 and L5 in kids and L3 and L4 in adults?

  • Comment removed

  • The spinal cord normally ends at lower border of L1 in adults, slightly lower in children. So L2-3 in Adults and L3-4 in kids would be my bet.

  • just had this done like 2-3 hours ago..... pressure felt like hell so they gave me some pain medicine through a iv

  • Me too i had it done 7 hours ago Pressure was so unbearable i just got pain meds 30 mins ago. im like what the hell man.. they had to do it twice and after that i went straight into 3 MRIs. now im hooked to an EEG machine for over night. All in all not a good day

  • whats the point of this procedure?

  • Many, if not Most, of diseases affecting the Brain and the spinal cord bring about some changes in the Cerebro-spinal fluid present in that cavity.

Make a puncture, drain some of that CSFluid and test for changes to diagnose the disese.

You could also introduce medication to alter Cerebro spinal physiology.

  • Not totally if your suspected with having MS! The spinal fluid results for MS is the exact same for ADEM (which is the same but the symptoms happen only once in your life...etc). This is why they kept me in the hospital for so long because they couldnt trust the results of the tap fluid whithout more testing....

  • i had this done like 3 hours ago... was pretty smooth sailing, the only thing that burned a little bit was the local anesthesia (he injected that in 4 different places) then everything else felt like pressure. i think the xanax i took before to relax REALLY helped. time to go lay back down now :)

  • that hurts! ive had 8 of those suckers. the first time it took the 36 tries before he got it in the right spot. PAINFUL!

  • Just keep the area clean and dry.

  • THAT LOOKS PAINFUL IS IT

  • Had this procedure done yesterday, very painful during the procedure because of a lack of local anaesthetic. Had to wait during the procedure while they got some more. Also took the doctor at least four attempts to get to the spinal fluid, then it stopped dripping so she had to remove it and do it again. Since then my back has ached non stop and the pain around the area of insertion is unbearable if I make contact with anything e.g. a bed or chair. It has me quite worried.
