go check out Slugbug, he's using one of these for his new album and his last album "Pointless Journey" was recorded on a Tascam 488. I use my 8 track cassette desk more than my 32 track digital one and i really want one of these, we used to have them at college in the two 8 track studios, I think we had a couple of Otari's in the 24 track studios but the R8's are great, obviously it's not going to match the 1" 4 track that the Beatles had but you can still do some major musical damage
@sgtelzilcho Don't get me wrong, I lusted after one of these back in 1992, but by 2003 when I finally went digital you could get a 16T system all in one box for the price of a decent laptop. The R8 would be great for recording live, very stable and reliable, you should still mix to 1/4" tape if you can but I'm so glad I don't have to mess with noise reduction and buying tape stock etc etc. There are no virtual tracks on a tape machine which limits you a lot in the studio. Fun machine though.
Actually CDs were never meant to sound better than a high fedility analog medium. They we're aimed at making something more convenient than a cassette tape yet come close to quality of a high end analog device. Cds rid all the artifacts that make an analog medium (reel to reel, record) more true to the source. So in a nutshell CDs are in fact a stripped down version.
@arinrobinson I kiss your feet for your brilliant statement, you are 100 percent correct. I feel sorry for those in the digital age that never truly experienced anolog.
@arinrobinson pure wisdom. thank you. this is so true. can i add, cds have no personality also in terms of the feeling of having them in your hands.. hell, even MiniDiscs have more character!
People these days don't realize how great these machines were. The sound quality for a home system was second to none. Even in these days of digital music. Don't get me wrong, CD are awesome. But, there is a quality to reel to reel that has not been matched.
guao, y pensar que esto puede resumirse en un tascam DR07. claro que quizas para algunos el sonido puede ser distinto, pero no hay duda que estas gravadoras son historia de la buena, me encanta lo retro en musica, gracias por compartir el video.
bullshit demo. One piano on an 8 tracks recorder ?

So glad I never bought one of these, 8 tracks squeezed onto 1/4" of tape sounds like a bad idea.
