I got to know this song from Voces8's version of it (S, CT, T, T, Bar, Bass) and it's amazing the different sound world that is created by having two counter-tenors instead of one soprano. Beautiful.
Question: Is the guy that is singing the Soprano part a castrato, sopranist, countertenor, or just using a finely tuned falsetto register? I can't really tell. I have a pretty good falsetto and (on a good day) can reach a C6 with minimal effort so I was just wondering...
@oplatre The Kings Singers official mention him as a countertenor, but I admit that he has a really singular voice, I understand why you were wondering.
@oplatre Yeah a countertenor but he adducts his true folds so he doesn't get a breathy sound which is why his timbre is very clean without being strident or straight-toned and why he can sing long phrases without having to renew the breath constantly like many male falsettists do.
The Lyrics are: "Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden, und der Tag hat sich geneiget, o bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden."
It's sung in german. The lyrics can be found in the Bible (Luke 24, 29): "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over"
By the way: the pronunciation isn't bad: I'm german and I do understand what they sing... I'm sure lots of german native speakers would love to be able to sing and pronounce Rheinbergers "Abendlied" like they do... ;-)
the neat thing about this is that the pronunciation matters not one whit. I don't need to know the text in order to love the music... The human voice is the oldest instrument there is, and it's wonderful to see a combination of them sounding so gloriously together...

I find it strange saying it about a group like The King's Singers, but there pronunciation could definitely use a bit of work. Other than that, amazing as always!
If I may add to the interpretation, I feel (completely subjectively, of course) that this music goes beyond the narrated situation to suggest the nightfall over the soul -silence, solitude, fragility, the need for God of an inocent child claiming for love, company and protection. This would be -I imagine- the soul of a man snatched from the daylight into the unknown, into the domains of death.
I like it even more after reading the bible passage that inspired this piece. This performance has all the sweetness and love suggested in the passage. I strongly recommend you read it (Luke 13,31), even if you're not religious; I'm not a very religious person myself but I found this "story" very moving and full of love, so now I can hear the same love in these guys' voices, which has made me love this masterpiece even more.
Of course it's the disciples of Emmaus, dear semme. But how many different pieces with sometimes complete antagonistic character can be composed on the very same text? Each composer puts into music not the text itself, but the echo this text has in his own heart.
...after all these thumbs down, I kind of lost my humour...I don't think people understood my comment, which meant that the King's Singers were so good that each time I listened to them they got on my nerves, for me being "so bad"...as to your comment, and since I lost my humour, I don't know if it is a good one or a bad one, sorry...but take care :o)))
Typically, church or sacred music is meant to be sung straight just cuz it's what was done! Opera required vibrato! So when you sing this at TMEA tell everyone to try and sing it without vibrato! But that won't happen!!!
generally speaking no... its very difficult to make this arrangement of singers (and indeed almost all arrangements) sing in straight tone; they are after all grown men!
From a singing point of view straight tone is generally unhelpful and unhealthy. And I don't mean full wangerian vibrato is good (it isn't) - but a slight shape in the note, or vibrato is a healthy expression of the singers breath. You can get straight tone voices but they are very rare.
Bravo JLee - perfect dedication for this über-wonderful performance by the King's .... I have sung this Rheinberger Abendlied too and it IS challenging - they performed (once again) a miracle! :)))
Well, I have to disagree. I've heard it in the original key, and yes, it does sound much brighter, but I feel it's not bright what it should sound like. For me this piece needs to convey the sweetness and love the text suggests: some peasants are telling Jesus (whom they hadn't recognized yet) to stay at their place because the night is coming. Tey're telling a total stranger to stay whith them; that IS definitely an act of love, and that's what this piece should sound like.
An exceptionally fine interpretation of one of my favourite choral works, and one of the great Romantic period masterpieces of choral counterpoint. I cannot imagine that Rheinberger himself would not have been humbled and moved by such a performance, even in in this transposition to accommodate the male singers. Deo gratias!
i just think that there's no way to sound so damn good like these few guys...if my english doesn't meet your expectations, it's because i'm from germany =)

@specialdefect Yes, that was extremely important. Music was commonly seen as something 'unholy' (don't know how to put it in a different way).

Lukas 24,29:
Bleibe bei uns; denn es will Abend werden, und der Tag hat sich geneigt.
Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.
May this stupendous English singing culture stay with us forever!
