Most companies look into it themselves, since whenever you do a PvP with limewire, or with a bittorrent, if a guy connects to you to download or upload, he can log your ip, and everone else's IP that he connects to. So usually the companies just sue you for illegally downloading the software. EA is the one that uses this the most.

In reality, the average Joe can afford to buy the movie or rent it out but it can be more convenient just to download it as illegal downloading has become so mainstream now days. Downloader's never gets prosecuted unless it's to scare the public.

Yo you need to watch out if you're a college student. The ISPs often monitor the content. With thatbeing said, it's legal to watch a stream of a video online, but downloading it is what will get you into trouble.
