I had a backlit Palm once. It was easy on the eyes and awesome to use under the covers. This is much dimmer than regular LCD backlighting so it should be good too.
Since an e-reader using this now EMITS light, as opposed to REFLECT light, doesn't that defeat the purpose?
I don't play with my laptop or cellphone before going to bed because they emit light, which doesn't help me get sleepy. Using my Kindle (with the lighted cover) reflects light, and helps me get to sleep.
@CaravelClerihew I suppose the brightness is much less. After all, anything you see emits (or rather reflects, but for your eyes it's the same anyway) light - else you wouldn't see it. Getting sleepy or tired over reading just depends on the actual amount of light emitted (/reflected), which in the case of a normal screen is quite huge. I suppose 1 single LED can't match that. At least I hope so... :)
@folkhippy If I'm not mistaken that was integrated with the Kindle 3. Just take a look at the interface... It's a front lighting, not a completely different e-reader ^^

Interesting.. But the whole reason I use my Kindle is that it's passively lit and much like paper is easier on the eyes than any backlight.

I don't understand: is this built into the ereader itself? Or is it some other accessory you attach to the ereader?
