In my opinion, this whole interview is staged. Joaquin is just acting and so are David. I think Joaquin is having a good laugh when he's done the interview. He want people to belevie is a mysterious and wired person. Its impossible to belive he just drove a cab and did the interview without any consideration. (Cuase that what it looks like)

He's not stoned, Letterman's not mocking him, he's in on the joke. It's for a mockumentary that Phoenix and Casey Affleck just started shopping around. From Nikki Finke and Deadline: "The film made its debut in a private lunchtime screening at WME headquarters last week for buyers -- including Harvey Weinstein -- who were sworn to secrecy. WME is selling the film, and it may only take a couple of days to reach a deal."

Joaquin is just being funny which he is. If you've seen his acting, which is amazing, then you know he's just acting. If I were in his shoes I'd be trying not to crack up. But a lot of actors come on this show to act strange, just to play in to Letterman's humor otherwise the show would be boring.

I think if this is real or isn't real on Phoenix's behalf, it's still disgusting that they are laughing at him, mocking him for entertainment. It's on the verge of being cruel. It's arkward to watch. Though Letterman got what he deserved and felt what it was like to be mocked by his own audience when he confessed that he was being blackmailed.

Anyway, the only point worth noting here is that if he is on drugs and not just acting, then it's totally FINE. He doesn't need help, look at him, he looks healthy, the only thing he's doing wrong is being high on a tv show with a studio audience of hundreds and a viewing audience of millions. If you've ever done drugs you would totally understand that that is not a good place to be in whilst high.

hey sammieleduce, if you can't see the acting abilities and ethics in his choices of movies than go watch "not another teen movie". You probably enjoy those movies. @ovenstone82 I find it funny how letterman for a second went "off script" and made a comment about going to "joaquins" house and chew gum. I used to like that pompous ass but when you bash kind hearted man it makes me sick. Notice how Dave has to have his chair atleast a foot higher than his geusts. Plus he pays people in the audience to laugh and jeer to get the crowd going. Notice the strange laughter when joaquin asks "did you give your audience laughing gas or something?"
