  • Its not Jauquin its Dave, he makes fun of him from the time he walks out there, his beard, his music, making rude comments, he seems nervous anyways and dave makes it worse. What a cock. Joaquin says i'll come on the show and perform, and dave says yeah that'll happen, i mean come on, then paul laughs at him. All dave does is insult him the whole time, no wonder he's acting that way.

  • letterman obviously still knows how to twiddle his thumbs very entertaining

  • Joaquin is an insult to people's intelligence.

  • He almost breaks character at 1:48

  • hes a crackhead

  • @sensualchocolate93 Why is he a 'crackhead' cause he's not working in a cubicle and doing what everyone else does?

  • he is not acting but yeah i dunno

  • That's not acting, he's obviously high... But Letterman is a fucking douche... never liked that idiot... and he's not even funny.

  • He looks homeless

  • I get that there's a lot of Phoenix fans but honestly he's come Letterman's show and said fuck all

  • letterman's a cunt

  • I cant say that he is on crack but his mouth is numb as $hit.

  • joaquin phoenix, celebrity actor turned genius satirist of your own celebrity and the cult of celebrity in general, we salute you!

  • This is totally fake...He is a good actor after all !!

  • The boy in the front is drunk on warm pepsi hahahhahaha......hands down funniest interview on ANY show EVER

  • Letterman is a patronising bastard. Phoenix is a multi-talented man. Now, so why is Letterman being so patronising? Is it cause he feels threatened by Phoenix? Can't he can't take someone being slightly different and not all 'hollywood'? I don't know, but anyway, this Letterman scum should be kissing Joaquins feet, not trying to make him feel like shit.

  • You can see that he wants to laugh at 4:48 ..clearly he's acting..great acting!!

  • @TheHunkIsSprunk haha yeah and at 1:48

  • guys this is like preety real, hes not acting..... i only say cos i read hes currently being helped out of a suicidal brinkby some other celebrity... or is that a hoax too??? i just wanna know if this great actoris okay!

  • letterman is being an ass

  • is he really faking it if he is he does not break charecter

  • Letterman should die. Phoenix is awesome, and to all those people on here talking shit.. no he is not acting.

  • i'd be high too if i had to listen to some ring licker like letterman laughing at his own 'jokes' It takes such a big man to let people run with their own ideas and let them feel like theyve made it for half an hour, rather than pointing out what cunts they are, and how infantile their sense of humour is.

  • Joaquin doesn't play along - can't see how this will give him anything but raised eybrows...

  • He's hilarious! I love him! What a great actor!!!

  • I like Joaquin ALOT! He's a terrific actor. I do miss the old Joaquin though. He seems very withdrawn now. I think Dave & the audience are being assholes to him in this interview. They're laughing AT him. Just very rude.

  • @nocuousoddity He deserves to be laughed at. Regardless if it's all a joke or not.

  • I feel sorry for Mr.Joaquin Phoenix making him feel uncomfortable and agitated like that !!!; he should feel ashamed of himself

  • AWESOME!!!!

  • Where is it written that this is an act?

  • very well played, it's obvious he's just joking....if I was as famous as he is I'd mess with the public's perception as well. he probably felt so amused for the rest of the day after they taped this.

  • man hes high on shrooms lmao

  • Letterman did do this sort of thing with Andy Kaufman... twice!

  • How is that? The Beard? Answer: In my way.. haha xD

  • I don't get it

  • So was this a 'joke?'

if it was hes a good actor but seriously this was stupid if it was a joke...doesnt seem to have a point and he doesnt seem like tha good of an actor to be able to pull this off.

  • He was great in walk the line . JOUQUIN STOP BEING A WANNA BE RAPPER AND GO BACK TO ACTING BUDDY !!!! PLEASE !

  • hahahahahahaha "you know that seems unlikely" i fell off the chair i was rolling my ass on the floor laughing

  • so awkward. he didnt even try to engage in conversation.

  • man he better be playing..if he's playing then he is a genious..but i feel a bit sad when i see him like this..

  • This was a joke. He's making a movie with Casey Aflek. It's a mokumentary, they just announced it a couple of weeks ago.

  • He's obviously suffering from poor mental health problems, which is very easy to make a joke out of. He needs professional help not taken advantage of, giving him gigs like this or any gigs for 'his music'.

  • @blmoir1980 it's an act..

  • Ummm...is this a joke?

  • living the dream joaquin.

  • lol they both played it really well

  • Letterman got played big time!!

  • No drugs? Come on... Look at the way he moves his mouth as he was chewing...

  • @porrita Don't you see he puts the chewing gum under the desk?

  • @porrita I see the way he pretends to put a gum under the desk, but I dont see any gum...

  • @porrita Maybe you are on drugs? Just before Dave plays the film clip you can see the gum clearly as Joaquin pulls it back off from the desk.

  • It is not drama! I wish it was, but I am sure that he is suffering from a major depression. I wish him all the best.

  • It is not drama! I wish it was, but I am sure that he is suffering from a major depression. I wish him all the best.

  • My God, Lettermans is the greatest Duche of all time...

  • A shame he couldn't have died outside the viper room..River had all the talent.

  • @magicfanatic1 - "A shame he couldn't have died outside the viper room...River had all the talent." THAT IS A HORRIBLE THING TO SAY!!! WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT OR YOU JUST HAVE A REALLY COLD HEART???

  • No respect for Joaquin in this interview with Dave and his audience acting like assholes laughing and mocking him. I did'nt see him disrespecting anyone others should allow him the same courtesy.

  • @johndownunder well i dont think they can understand it.. and that is prob why thy laugh.. (If this change is real its a pretty huge one so :) try to be a little understanding both ways.. they are all just people.. joaq to..

  • @johndownunder you surely realise they are both joking and acting. very funny interview, gj joaquin

  • Joaquin has a sense of humour. You should see some of the other interviews he's done. I really hope this is fake and that he's just playing a prank on the media. I don't think he is the type to want to have the spotlight on him. So it is kind of sussed that he goes on to letterman with a beard and sunglasses and not talk much. I think its just publicity and material for his new doc/mocumentary.

  • He looks like he didnt take his xanax and he may be trying to quit smoking or MAYBE he has an upset stomach because.. he kinda.. looks like he needs to shit.

  • He looks way

    way

    way

    better clean shaven

  • 7:59

He grabs the gum from under the table again

  • @aseravalle no shit

  • I don't understand how anyone can think he's such a great actor after seeing this. Totally unconvincing - you can see he's acting. You can see him thinking about what to do with his hands what kind of face to make etc. He pauses for laughter. It's just so fake. Totally lost all respect for him. It would have been funny for a little while, sure, but now it's just boring and quite pathetic. And personally I think people are laughing partly out of akwardness and partly because he's playing to it.

  • As much as I dislike Letterman, I have to admit, Joaquin really asked for that. Why on Earth would he show up for a nationally televised interview with a scruffy beard, long unkempt hair, wearing dark glasses, clearly wasted, mumbling incoherently and NOT expect to be ridiculed. It's hard to watch the death throes of a tremendous career, but he was not forced onto the stage, he walked out on his own two feet. I really hope he can clean up his act and avoid more incidents like this.

  • ITS A TRAP

  • most stupid guy on the Universe

  • love the sighing, looking down, the umms and mumbling

  • I'm from england and David Letterman is probably the biggest dick of a talk show host ever seen, infact I'd love to see him in Joaquins seat being ridiculed, smug bastard.

  • come on people.... this is a con. him and affleck are doing this for he mockumentary. i mean he's smiling a lot during the interview cuz he can barely stop laughing.

  • I wonder what he told letterman at the very end?

  • WTF?? was Joaquin being Joaquin or was he joking around, i couldn't tell?????

  • Why is he being so quite....

  • Joaquin is a genius. I love his comedy. Total Andy Kaufman tribute.

  • Come on people its all an act. Did ya notice the ending at all??

  • WTH? lost all respect I once had for this man...

  • this foo is high on pcp

  • I don´t know...it´s been a while since I talked to Joaquin Phoenix. ;)

  • Maybe he was trying to be like Crispin Glover?

  • Thank You CBS for posting this. Nice to see a network on top of the game and not to be afraid of the ONLY place to watch videos.

Can't wait to see what Joaquin has up his sleeve with the movie...

  • Letterman isn't 'in' on anything. He's always like that.

  • @LuvKing87 i think they are talkin about joaquin

  • @xmanclyx I was referring to the people who posted about Letterman being in on it as well.

  • how come at the very end he takes off his glasses, shakes daves hand, and tells him good job??? good publicity

  • oooo come on... he is obviously in character... something gooood is comming out of this. Like Borat

  • joaquin is bamf.

  • If its real i feel bad for Joaquin because he is a top actor. And a top actor can deffenitly pull off a possible stunt like that if its fake. Its very possible this can be linked to the mocumentary about Jouaqins "life" that is soon to come;)

  • Where did the rumour about all this being fake start? I think he is fucked up! He uses drugs and have just let himself go completely and become aggressiv because of drug abuse, why doesn`t he get help? Ben Affleck has made a documentary with him, if he really is a good friend, he should get JP some help, not support for this lifestyle! If he continues with drugs we all know what might happen. JP get your stuff together and get some help! And people stop calling it for a joke!

  • @74Charm Well first of all it is not Ben Afflec, it is Ben Afflecs brother that made the documentary. Second, are you sure this is drug abuse. He has been famous nearly his whole adult life, perhaps this is a sane reaction to an environment that is nuts as squirrel shit...It does not HAVE to be drugs...

  • @TalulaLula He seems very disturbed and ill in this interview, maybe his attitude here is a mix of many things. I hope he gets some tlc and professional help.

  • @TalulaLula its a known fact that hes a drug addict and alcoholic

  • @TalulaLula lmfao... the sane reaction?

  • Joaquin is great. Nice acting here! And David Lettermann play along!

  • @MaggareN Hey its true and at the end he took off his glasses and acted normal!!

  • @MaggareN

Hes not acting hes doped up on something.

He is a great actor but im sure he isnt acting here..

    Shame...

  • In my opinion, this whole interview is staged. Joaquin is just acting and so are David. I think Joaquin is having a good laugh when he's done the interview. He want people to belevie is a mysterious and wired person. Its impossible to belive he just drove a cab and did the interview without any consideration. (Cuase that what it looks like)

  • @ban4n Yeah, it's so obvious this it's act, kinda great one, nice "i'm a drug addict" role, (y)

  • its a pish take by Phoenix.

    Mocumentary due out soon.

  • He must be faking it. If he's a drug addict and as crazy as everyone says he is, then he wouldn't shake lettermans hand and say "Good Job!" and take of his glasses, he would have just looked more dulled out and just walk away. He is faking.

  • Crazy and genius is the same god damn thing

  • Seems deluded even while walking.

  • Letterman is pwning Joaquin!!!! lovin it!

  • best interview ive ever seen LOL

  • It kinds of looks like he's stoned or something. He didn't have much to say (but then actors are obligated to do interviews), then Letterman got a sarcastic with him so it pissed him off.

Poor Joaquin, I hope he gets his shit together. He's an awesome actor.

  • Why is everyone pissed at David Letterman, it's joaquin's fault to act like a dickhead, letterman's gotta do something. Joaquin's awesome but now he's just a junkie

  • what a fucking dickhead!!!! he just makes this interview so awkward, that is such a prick thing 2 do, david letterman is being so nice and hes just acting like a pretentious cunt! he wonders why people r laughing and hes just after quitting his very successful acting career and started a rapping career, wtf does he expect!!!

  • cocaine's a helluva drug.

  • what's the point of going on a talk show if you have nothing to say? A lot of people came from all over the country to see him that night. If he doesn't want to be in the business any more he should stay the fuck home.

  • did he drink letterman's coffe

  • He is high or what? He was really good actor, but now? looks like bump. And Rap now? WTF is going on with this world........

  • Joaquin is clearly acting. I have just watched the last interview with Letterman and Joaquin has nothing to do with Unabomber... Can wait to see Affleck's "documentary".

  • At least Joaquin has a personality..

  • "...yea, you're doin' fine..."

    Hilarious.

  • This could be a mockumentary that him and Casey Affleck are working on, will see, if it is then thats fucking genius

  • River would be proud Joaquin

  • one of the standout qualities of his acting is his genuiness. i don't think he's acting. i think he's fed up with the biz; being a bought and sold piece of holywood furniture whose soul is on the auction block every day. this is his way of dropping out from that institution. he's got enough money to fart around for the rest of his life. he's probably history.

  • "ladies and gentleman.. say hello to he very talented.. HOAKIN FINIX..." LOL

  • I'm laughing WITH him, not at him. Can't wait for the movie.

  • joaquins the man!!

  • dammm hes acting exactlyyy like i do on a bad day when all my problems look so much bigger than they really are an i feel like everyone is laughing at me constantly;an im jus serious, numb, unenthusiastic, an feel alone, like a paranoid android and i feel no one can understand so why bother

idk if this was staged but Joaquin Phoenix is a great fucking actor,on "The Gladior",on "Walk the Line",on "Sighns",on "The Village"

idk exatcly whats going through his head but i wish him good luck!!!

  • People, It was a hoax... really, do you READ? The hip hop thing was a fake.

    Check this out: /watch?v=tzX6XXVEa4s

    He's directing and stuff...

  • Really happy to find out this was all a piss-take! Me and my mates were like pretty sure it was, but you can never be totally sure!? He coulda done a christian bale!?

joaquin is a quality actor and this film sounds like it could be brilliant.

  • You guys know this is a joke right? Idiots..

  • Joaquin Phoenix is fucking awesome. Letterman is just jealous that he'll never been 1/8 the man he is.

  • He's not stoned, Letterman's not mocking him, he's in on the joke. It's for a mockumentary that Phoenix and Casey Affleck just started shopping around. From Nikki Finke and Deadline: "The film made its debut in a private lunchtime screening at WME headquarters last week for buyers -- including Harvey Weinstein -- who were sworn to secrecy. WME is selling the film, and it may only take a couple of days to reach a deal."

  • @BehindTheWallLLC Hi there! Ok, please don't make fun of me (because I only watched it once) but I had NO idea that it was staged. I really DID believe it was true because I know how diverse Joaquin can be. They BOTH really did fool me!!

  • This is great... Can't wait until the movie comes out. It's like a cross between Borat and Andy Kaufman.

  • It was all an act! He fooled us all! DLISTED JUST REPORTED HE FAKED THE CRAZY! It was part of a mockumentary.

  • i thought it was zack galifinakis

  • Grow up Mr P. The world doesn't revolve around your neuroses or your drug taking.

  • Half of you are stupid. The audience is laughing because of the awkward silence, the simple to the point answers and gestures. Dave had to carry that interview. If Joaquin was imitating Kaufman, it blew up in his face.

  • for me this isn't joaquin

  • He is a little more than just stoned....Must be some kind of hallucinogenic drug...He was so scared of everything.. unless he was just acting or maybe he was sad

  • Joaquin is just being funny which he is. If you've seen his acting, which is amazing, then you know he's just acting. If I were in his shoes I'd be trying not to crack up. But a lot of actors come on this show to act strange, just to play in to Letterman's humor otherwise the show would be boring.

  • God forbid in the amazing land that is America, someone should not appear false and happy. No wonder laugh tracks are often used.....the public are so thick they don't even understand when to laugh and when not to....WOW

  • Are you actually sh**tting me that most of these comments are insulting Joaquin? It's the presenter that's being a complete d*ck, I can only imagine the people that find him humorous are the same retarded Americans sat in the audience. And so the f*ck what if he is stoned, I think anyone that witnesses their brother dying on the street is allowed to get stoned and drink now and again if that helps them through it.

  • he's stoned!!!. thats why he's wearing glasses haha idk

  • So whatever happened to Joaquin? It is uncomfortable to watch, but have little sympathy for Mr. Phoenix, other than he has some awful support. Whoever was suppose to be there for him, obviously wasn't there for him. I hope, for his sake, they are no longer with him.

  • I would not deem it with such greatness as I would Andy Kaufman, but it sure is good acting.

  • But if he's not on drugs then he is doing some of the best acting that has ever been done. Anyone who has done drugs will recognise and relate to his behaviour instantly, so if he's not on drugs here, then he definitely has been at some point in his life.

  • hes obviously tripping his balls off and was so fucking awkward in this video. i almost pissed myself with laughter.

  • He is on something what ever it is please get help. there is a 12 step progam on 138th street in Harlem on 8th Ave. Called the YMCA. You can get urself clean, you can have a good meal and you can rap with the local brotha's in ur spare time but u must be back in by 9:00 or u will loose ur bed.

  • Americans find anything funny!

  • It's an act lol

  • This is like qatching a train wreck in slow motion. I guess he misses Phoenix, because he's doing his best to kill himself.

  • hahahaha

  • hes just doing a bad andy kaufman impersonation

  • hes so fucked up. i liked him as an actor. rap... fuck me man. that music sucks so hard on a fat elephant cock!!!

  • 7:07 dude's fucking around so hard

  • I think if this is real or isn't real on Phoenix's behalf, it's still disgusting that they are laughing at him, mocking him for entertainment. It's on the verge of being cruel. It's arkward to watch. Though Letterman got what he deserved and felt what it was like to be mocked by his own audience when he confessed that he was being blackmailed.

  • @lisaJay20 I think this wasn't intentional... The whole interview was awkward... remember Dave is a comedian, they cure awkwardness with laughter.... that's why he kept cracking jokes in hope of relieving the tension... this either A) Was staged on purpose ... or B) Joaquin is on really hard drugs... in which case it's not Dave's fault.... Dave's job is to be funny

  • @javixm I agree it was totally awkward. The jokes make it worse. Ahh well I hope it gets sorted out soon :) Sure the truth be out there somewhere

  • @lisaJay20 Letterman got what he deserved? What are you smoking? It's his show and there are literally thousands of people who want the spot he gave to Juaquin. This stunt was rude and disrespectful under any circumstances. And he deserved being laughed at for acting like such a loon. However, it was a stunt. It's been confirmed it has something to do with a film he's making with Casey Affleck.

  • @PurpleAsparagus :p I didn't realize it was staged. Still I think it must be horrible to be laughed at in such arkwardness. I don't believe anyone deserves to be laghed at or mocked, especially if they arleady feel like they've hit rock bottom or otherwise. Lets not degrade ourselves now.

  • @lisaJay20 I think if he had hit bottom that hard then he should have been elsewhere. Being the lead guest on any of the 11:30 late night shows is a coveted spot. His behavior, imo, was unacceptable in that regard. However, since Letterman was probably in on it., oh well! lol

  • @lisaJay20 lol. Hes an actor. Hes pulling an Andy Kauffman, trust me. The "Documentary" on Joqauin is hopefully coming out soon.

  • @lisaJay20 arkward

  • @kdchmln Thank you, I always struggle with that word :P Get mixed up with the r and w.

  • People... he's an actor.. its called publicity...come on now... lets be smart and logical about this... the man has a drug problem... but he is also very arrogant.. believe me this is a calculated move sooner than later u will see him without facial hair back in a Movie that some how RELATES to this Strange behavior... Just incase i am wrong... which i could be (dont think so) I feel sorry for him... but as i said before i think this is all a calculated move.

  • @TrankWrites haha listen to yourself. You should check out Maybe Logic. It will save you. Anyway, the only point worth noting here is that if he is on drugs and not just acting, then it's totally FINE. He doesn't need help, look at him, he looks healthy, the only thing he's doing wrong is being high on a tv show with a studio audience of hundreds and a viewing audience of millions. If you've ever done drugs you would totally understand that that is not a good place to be in whilst high.

  • It's just so sad and these morrons r laughing all the time.

  • @driverluk morrons

  • what the hell was he on?????

  • ARGH, it's like pulling teeth!

  • i want to know if this is reallll :S

  • Comment removed

  • I think he is annoyed to be there...I think he just doesn't like lettermen. No wonder, I hate when presenters are scripted but badly pretend not to be, its cringy.

  • This is really sad....its not funny at all...

  • the funniest letterman interview since madonna :p

  • Looks like Joaquin has a Charlie Manson look going ! LOL Funny

  • You have to wonder what's actually wrong with this guy, Joaquin. Is he on drugs or something? When he talks, it seems intelligent enough, but he's just really slow... I'm embarrassed for him.

  • can letterman stop making compliments and ask normal questions?? i think joaquim felt uncomfortable ..and is waiting for normal questions

  • is he trying to look like a jackass?

  • is he a method actor?

what role was he playing at the time?

    He could be in character?

  • @mcdeezy7 I'm an actor and I tell you this, The Method is dead. We are real!!!! Acting it self is dead, being must be the first concept of the actor. I love you God Bless.

P.S: All of this means nothing forget it. It's a metaphor dedicated to forgetfulness.

  • hey sammieleduce, if you can't see the acting abilities and ethics in his choices of movies than go watch "not another teen movie". You probably enjoy those movies. I don't blame Joaquin for going to the dark side just like Heath Legder and so on because of arseholes like Sammieleduces boyfriend David Letterman. When great actors are harraced and made a joke of their craft that they take so seriously they turn to substance abuse to remedy the depression.

  • @ovenstone82 I find it funny how letterman for a second went "off script" and made a comment about going to "joaquins" house and chew gum. I used to like that pompous ass but when you bash kind hearted man it makes me sick. Notice how Dave has to have his chair atleast a foot higher than his geusts. Plus he pays people in the audience to laugh and jeer to get the crowd going. Notice the strange laughter when joaquin asks "did you give your audience laughing gas or something?"

  • god damn this is depressing :-( he is (was) one of my favourite actors and its such a pity hes having such obvious trouble.
