Heard what was left of this group at a state fair long after they'd recorded their songs. Spanky of Our Gang took Mama Cass's place. And Papa John was there. He passed away a few weeks after that.

@Helivz Hey, well said. :) I dug deeper and found a web site that has the studio mix band members broken out and Bone Howe was the mix engineer for lots of those great vocal groups. Nowadays, it's just "100 channels of mono" and vocals are buried in the NON-mix, as another big name sound engineer friend of mine quipped :)
I went into detail on this in another room. But simply, to have the vocals stand out and hear every word while keeping the instruments seemingly out in front, is astounding.

I really wish that nowadays people could be accepted for what they are and the music they produce; not the way they look. This is exactly why I love this band so much!
Very few times in my life have I ever seen a look of absolute love and devotion in someone's eyes, and that black and white shot of Cass looking up at her man is something I will always cherish. A great voice has to come from somewhere, and in that one shot we can see a glimpse of her soul. It's a rare thing, that kind of love, more precious than words can express.
This fascinating documentary completely glosses over the fact that Papa John Phillips was already married with a family when Michelle saw him perform and decided to scoop him up. Wisely, she married a plastic surgeon in recent years and looked exactly the same when I saw her appear in conjunction with this special on PBS several years ago as she did when she sang with the group. She looked much younger, in fact, than in some of the clips that had been shot fifteen or twenty years earlier.
i don't rember when i first heard the mamas and the paps, but what i do rember is that the very first song of there's that i heard was california dreamin and believe me when i tell you that i was on a quest to find a copy of that song and when i finaly did, i play'd it over and over, i couldn't believe how great there music realy was and how a song like this get stuck in ones head and stay there for years to come. for me at the age of 43 i still very much enjoy there music.
The Mamas&/The Papas represent a time in music and in world events that has reflections on Vietnam and those who served there. We adopted them as our image of Home and their songs just filled us with a desire to get back into the world that we had left. Even after 40 plus years, when I hear their songs it brings back both the good and bad times of that era. They have become legends to many Vietnam Vets as were others who came to entertain us and bring us a piece of home. Ron

I suppose television was much less important in deciding who bought records in those days. She really does look like that bloke off Little Britain, doesn't she? Overall, by our standards they'd be backing singers at most. Still, I suppose that in forty years' time people in 2051 will look at videos from today and think how ugly and tasteless we look too.

I loved the group, but it was almost ruined my Michelle's sexcapades which I won't go into out of respect for the ones that are no longer here. John, Cass and Denny are gone. The songs were great, and I have them. The MaMa's and the PaPa's live on in my memory.

I loved the Mamas and Papas . I used to sit in front of the big console stereo as a kid , before i learned to play guitar and pretend i was playing along with a tenis racket., broom etc (smiles) it was a special time in life and music was magical and it still is!
its just a little harder to find the good stuff but its around. where would you be if there wasn't any music? what a terrible thought.

I've never been to California but this band especially remind me of the joy and forever-ness of a hazy, lost and safe world in the summer we all became 17 in any place, any language.
I like to watch them move, natural is sensual..
This morning, I envied no one, but to have seen Mamas and Papas on a good night, singing this song at a gig in Berkely,1966 . . . priceless.

I just remember listening to them and kicking back, drinking a cool one, and heading out from Base Camp the next day for another long week or month in the boonies. I really didn't give a s__t if Momma was fat, Michelle was a slut, or anyone was a perv. Just enjoyed the tunes and lived for the day. Worked for me but I guess not everyone.

They should do a reunion tour with Michelle. She can sing all of the harmony parts without any lead vocal. Nostalgia is killing pop music. The Mamas & The Papas had a couple of good songs, released one really good album, but were creatively spent by 1968. Their best song is Straight Shooter. Their worst is that insipidly overwrought showstopper, Dream A Little Dream Of Me.

"The Papas and The Mamas" is one of their most creative albums production wise and the track "Mansions" off that album has to be one of their greatest creations EVER. Have you ever HEARD that one? The lyrics and harmonies will blow your mind more that the "hits" will.

Very few times in my life have I ever seen a look of absolute love and devotion in someone's eyes, and that black and white shot of Cass looking up at her man is something I will always cherish. A great voice has to come from somewhere, and in that one shot we can see a glimpse of her soul. It's a rare thing, that kind of love, more precious than words can express.

This fascinating documentary completely glosses over the fact that Papa John Phillips was already married with a family when Michelle saw him perform and decided to scoop him up. Wisely, she married a plastic surgeon in recent years and looked exactly the same when I saw her appear in conjunction with this special on PBS several years ago as she did when she sang with the group. She looked much younger, in fact, than in some of the clips that had been shot fifteen or twenty years earlier.

i don't rember when i first heard the mamas and the paps, but what i do rember is that the very first song of there's that i heard was california dreamin and believe me when i tell you that i was on a quest to find a copy of that song and when i finaly did, i play'd it over and over, i couldn't believe how great there music realy was and how a song like this get stuck in ones head and stay there for years to come. for me at the age of 43 i still very much enjoy there music.

The Mamas&/The Papas represent a time in music and in world events that has reflections on Vietnam and those who served there. We adopted them as our image of Home and their songs just filled us with a desire to get back into the world that we had left. Even after 40 plus years, when I hear their songs it brings back both the good and bad times of that era. They have become legends to many Vietnam Vets as were others who came to entertain us and bring us a piece of home. Ron
