That young child actress (Jennifer Lawn) is obviously utterly terrified in that scene, and one wonders how it affected her. I watched the whole film yesterday and rewound that clip, just concentrating on her little face....haunting.
Great, wonderful clip! but your endless trailing before and after music, which is by the way taking up 50% of the trailer time too, makes the greatest moments of any movie clips, regardless if they're free, (as they're selling more by introducing samples in the first place, by giving off a "specimen" of the movie!) is just too painful. Please stop that. :) Thank you! Kindest Regards.
@Flynn4Red My comment?? Ok, since you were not rude I'll take it down for you. :-) I don't get the appeal, I personally think it's badly acted and exploiting emotions but since you're a fan, down it goes....
Gut wrenching scene..Anyone on here that says that they wouldn't have made a choice, is thinking selfishly. She was put in an impossible position, but as a parent if you can save one of your children then you do. I'd be mental afterwards, but as a Mom of four if I could save one or both die, then I'd save the one! She chose the boy because he was older and had better chance of survival. She chose because she had to not because she wanted to. Love of a mother.
@matthiify I sincerely hope you never have children if, even on Youtube, you comment that this scene, which the great Meryl Streep could only preform once, makes you laugh. I also sincerely hope that you will realize that being a parent is not something to sneer or makes snide comments at. It is hard, often thankless work. I am not a parent myself, but when or if I am, I will look back on this day and realize my children will be lucky to have a parent who cares about them.
Meryl Streep did a very good job in this scene! However the man who made this scene truly memorable was the very talented Austrian character actor Karlheinz Hackl, who plays the sadistic SS officer. Man, I wish they would have elaborated on and gave his character alot more screen time. He was even more convincing and terrifying than Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List. Had they given Hackl more material to work with and screen time, he probably would have won an Oscar! He's that good!!
Personally, I was more affected by the child actress Jennifer Lawn who plays little Eva in this scene. She was so young and looks so utterly terrified though out the whole scene. That, in my opinion was more than acting. I hope she knew it wasn't 'real'.
I can't even imagine being that poor little girl.' first her mother chooses her then she gets killed. That's the saddest thing I've ever heard, having to make a choice. Personally, I would let him take both, so that they die together and will be in heaven together, and that they are not alone.
@Bubbles12217 No you wouldn't, you would do exactly what nearly all those people did, everything possible to save any life you could, especially your own child. Actually, almost no women were ever separated from their children, the Nazi's knew better, women and children together were almost all immediately sent to the gas, there are several pictures of familys of women in children sitting in the woods by krema 4 waiting their turn.
would they have killed both children anyway if sophie hadn't tried persuading the officer in the first place? or should sophie not even have tried talking to that officer
@CrazyAngelDude The Nazi officer was making a bad joke with fatal consequences. He interpreted Jesus Christ's statement "Suffer the little children to come unto me" to mean that the Saviour wanted the children to die. Your outrageous joke puts you on the same level as that officer, or at least is a sign of hopeless immaturity and lack of humanity. Wer diese Szene schaut ohne zutiefst betrübt zu sein, der hat kein Herz (He who watches this scene without being greatly saddened has no heart).
What supposably happens to her is she killed or just taken

Almost unbearable to watch this. Just watch Streeps face - her eye twitches and head movements, just epic, epic acting.
