In truth, given the limited number of notes that there are (A - G), there are only so many possible combinations of notes (which is what a chord is)... and unfortunately, only about... EIGHT of them sound ANY good at ALL. In other words, you really CAN'T be creative in music, because anything that deviates too far from these few chords is going to be ear-bleedingly dissonant.

I'd still say that there are secondary dominants (an alternate tonicization for the original key), and many other sonorities that could be used, such as diminished, augmented, half..My comment was related to how the "music" industry at large has no creativity, so everyone's playing the same song - i V vi IV or i iv vi V, using only those four basic chords in any order.

Cobain used all types of secondary based-chordal structures for almost all of his songs, or at least chords on the primary level other than the typical progressions mentioned.
