From my experience, a maestro w/ the 10s of 1000s of hours of experience of EVH or Jimi would pretty much be able to tune on the spot and not miss a note. But after that abuse on the very last feedback-chord, I'd guess no way. That was Awesome!
this tune was on Van Halen ll which was released in 1979. the debut album was king in 1978. 1977 alittle premature for my recollections. but 1 of my faves in their catalog.
Wow. Holy shit, were they on fire at this point. Fantastic. Ed sounds amazing here, such energy and freedom in his playing back then. If this is '77, he may still be playing his mongrel strat with the standard Fender trem on it instead of the early Floyd. If so, it's hard to believe anyone can abuse a trem like that and stay in tune. Either way, bravo! This is awesome.
It's well documented my friend. He didn't start using the Rose device until much later (1984? I think!) He answered questions about how he kept the damn thing in tune on the first album/shows interviews. His simple explanation was that you don't let it go on the way up, and if it effs you retune while you're playing quick! Yet another head scratcher. Dude was so bad.

Never got to see or hear VH live until a1986 concert in my home town but by then they were relabeled Van Hagar by fans.thanks for the 70"s posts.
