    Mitch

(sent this e-mail to my living relatives....thinking about my Dad)

  • I had heart surgery a few years ago and one of the nurses betted me that I wouldn't be able to remember the song that was played when I was being put under. Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll...let me tell ya, the surgeon played THIS song, which my Daddy sang to me from a very early age, and that ole nurse lost his bet that day. I said, "That 's my daddy's way of bein here" and I proceeded to sing ALL the song. Ha ahahahaha. Thanks you Johnny H for this classic piece of Americana.

  • I've only known the published version. It is nice to hear this song, where you can hear the instruments. I like the guitar pickin'.

  • God bless the America in the 1950s.

  • Just say no to BOOZE. Anywhere or anyplace. Evilest concoction second to none.

  • Nice version thanks....I love this song. It used to be one of my fave songs to sing as a kid. I remember there was some cartoon that went with this song....wish I could find it.

  • That's the old chesnut,"Times change" of course they do, but the majority of people don't..Some people have always been up to no good. It's simply that laws are more lax now, and people of a similar bent take advantage. What was once a serious crime is now looked on as a misdemeanor. However, many people are still honest hardworking folk. So you are not alone in wanting a decent life. far from it.

  • Let me tell you at least you could understand every word and no one use foul language. I know people will say times change, there people out there that still want something decent in their lives.

  • I remeber when this song came out. I was around nine years old at the time. I turned 60 this past October. I was 5 going on 6 when Elvis hit it big. I always told my two daughters I was old as rock 'n roll.

  • @deathdrop1 It must have been nice to grow up with that music.

  • On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month the guns fell silent. Today we remember. Solemn Greetings on this Remembrance Veterans Poppy Armistice Day to all nations.

And for the for Americans/Canadians Please accept my salute on the anniversary of the Battle of Crysler's Farm Nov 11 1813.

  • To all you Montclair State Red Hawks fans and Carolina Panthers fans: This was the #1 song in the USA when Sam Mills came into the world. I prefer to remember that day (6-3-1959) instead of when he left this world. Both Johnny and Sam left us too soon, IMO.

  • poor gator

  • The Brit fleet was also repulsed at the old Spanish Fort. A battalion of the Brit 95th Rifles was there as were some Jamaican Rangers. The surprise Brit attack on the redoubt on the river (eat side of river, west end of battle line) was repulsed by the outnumbered US garrison in hand to hand fighting.

  • There were also Freedmen at the battle. Previous to the Brit assault, a day or few days before, the USA artillery damaged & drove off the Brit artillery, so it was rather less effective on the day of the battle. The Brit Inf regt. assigned to carry most of the ladders to cross the Rodrigues canal forgot most of them, & they didn't have enough boats to quickly cross the river to the west bank & take that US battery there that enfiladed the main Brit assault.

  • Love it ! I just did a version and uploaded to youtube. He really inspired me quite a bit with this tune when I was a kid.

Loved reading about him on the net !! Thanks for all the great pics!!!!!!!!! and of course this wonderful concert !!!

  • this was a good song.

i like also big john and westerns and steve mcqueen and sumthin.

  • Louisiana Hayride was in Shreveport.

  • Yes, it was, but they sometimes they took the show on the road. This particular Hayride show was broadcast from Harlingen, TX. On the full audio of this song was on, it is announced at the beginning of the broadcast that they are in TX that week.

  • Interesting. I didn't know that. I guess I was just in defense mode because the Shreveport area is my home town. Thanks for the trivia.

  • No problem, I don't everything they did back then and why either. Shreveport is a nice area to visit. I use to go visit Tillman Franks quite a bit before he passed and loved the area. It's been 2 or 3 years since I was there last. There are some good books out there on the Hayride if you haven't read yet, you might like. "Hank, Elvis, and Me" by Horace Logan, and "Tillman Franks, I Was There When It Happened" by Tillman Franks and Robert Gentry. Good accounts of the Hayride days.

  • @claflin75 They usually went on the road in February of every year because some other organization used the Municipal Auditorium every February for something.

  • He had the best voice for this song.

  • great song but no britt ran its not in our blood

  • Haha, nice one.

  • cheers friend

  • You're absolutely right. The Brits almost won the thing, but the commander decided to abort the mission with victory almost in hand. The withdrawal was not followed by the Americans who were more than happy after almost getting beat.

  • The Brits never came close to winning, they were expecting a smaller force with less firepower. The lack of coordination and huge losses convinced them otherwise. Jackson didn't follow up because he thought they would attack the next day and when he found out they were retreating it was too late in the day to follow them. The Brit attack on the west side of the Miss. river was a success but too late to effect the outcome.

  • no...brits didn't run.bro'....they were killed where they stood...thats the American way

  • No actually, they were Scottish Highlanders, and yes they did run. It was a poorly planned and poorly executed attack that got a lot of good men killed. The irony is that the march to come up to New Orleans from the land side was brilliantly done.

  • English soldiers are from England Scottish soldiers are from Great Britain (Bristish).

  • @Bullettube The british had a professional army. you would think they would be able to decimate a small force made up of Tenneesee Regulars, choctaw indians, slaves, and pirates. The nights before Jackson conducted guerilla attacks. The day of the battle the British charged jacksons fortfied position and took heavy losses. Even their leader was killed.

  • We lost this great talent to a Damn Drunk Driver!!! .

  • i agree. although i have heard that he knew that he was going to die young, because

he gave one of his guitars to a friend.

if you want to laugh, find a copy of Homer

    &Jethro's version

  • Sehr beruhigend!
