  • How many tanks of gas you use to do that

  • @dame12712

I think I ran four or five tanks through it. This engine had a lot of pinch, rather get it past the super tight time here where I can watch it closely. Ask ten guys and get ten different answers...

  • SO...this is your 1st tank at an average of 185f....just enough for the sleeve to expand

then what do you do..?..im intrested in your method....

thanks for this video man.....i think its great.

  • why do u have a picco in your savage now? did u blow the lrp

  • This Picco I broke in for a friend. I have about 30 Piccos, 2 LRP 30s, a few Axial 32s, several 18s, five Savage XLs, a Savage X, several truggies, several buggies, some on road cars... somewhere around 36 nitro vehicles and probably around 50 engines, maybe more. To answer your question though, no I did not blow the LRP, different engine, different XL. Thanks...

  • you serious?

  • Yes, I am serious, I started in R/C cars in about 1967 or 1968 with a Cox Dune Buggy. Been in and out of the game since. I call my basement the RC Salvage Yard. 8^)

  • @adb140275, they were NOT broken in wrong. That is waaay to hot to break in a new engine.... tell me, what happens to steel when its put in an oven for hours at a temperture of over 3000 degrees? Melts, softens the steel, Exact same thing going on here.

  • @mxpro024 I thought I replied, but apparently the site did not take it. I had 7 XLs and 2 X Savages at one time. I am down to four XLs and one X now. The LRP 30 is fine and doing a great job. The kids love running it.

  • Way too hot for a break in bro. Ouch

  • If you do not run a Picco up there during break in, you have not accomplished anything. It does no good to run everything super rich and cold. Once the crank pin has set in the rod, the only thing left to break in is the piston to sleeve. I do not know how long this engine ran, but my original Picco 28 is now over 10 gallons and still running super.

  • my engine has ran 1/4 gallon and i forgot to make it hot.

can i still break it in again?

  • You will be fine, just run it a little rich for the first gallon or so. Talking Picco, correct??

  • no just the hpi f4.6 i just got my savage x for 10 days but the plastic spur gear and and the engine mount broke after flipping it over so thats why i didnt drove so much with it

  • That is an excellent engine, they are really nice to run and deliver great performance for the bucks. You are fine, just keep it a little rich for the first half gallon....

  • @91W350 So in ur heat cycle break in, do u cut off the engine and let it cool? Or just keep it running and let it heat up and cool off? How long do u cycle it? 10 gallons is great, I need to get an engine to last me that long.

  • If I can get the temperature over 230 and have it cool down below 180 without shutting it off, I will keep it running. If it gets up there and I cannot get it to fall, I will stop the engine and position the piston at the bottom of its stroke and let it cool. Piccos have very hard pistons and extremely hard chrome in the sleeve.

  • I sometimes add a fan on engines that run hot and are still obviously rich, on the other hand, I wrap cold running engines with aluminum foil to help build heat.

  • @91W350 So when u keep it running, how long will u run it for? On the other hand, if u cut it off, how many times will u fire it back and cut it off? Just trying to get a handle on how long to heat cycle it. I've tried it with my Axail 28 but it doesnt always work so well for me.

  • @91W350 Hi. I just gotta ask. Do you still have ur orig. Picco 28?

  • @brio76mars I think so, that is pretty hard to say. I may have donated it to a kid who lost his stuff in a fire. I bought five pretty close together and it is really hard to keep them straight.

  • @Restaurant25 Are you talking 230 degrees C by chance? I agree that 440 plus degrees fahrenheit would be too hot. to run an engine.

  • @Restaurant25 I do not get where you think this is too hot, a Picco 28 will normally run in the 250 to 270 range, unless you are talking Celsius temperature scale, then I agree that 518 degrees Fahrenheit would be too hot.

  • @Restaurant25

    hi

the temps used in the old school method are not hot enough for the sleeve to expand,,,.. so when you think its time to tune...you lean out the needles, thus enabling the sleeve to expand for the first time....while your running at full open throttle...this method gently introduces the engine to what its gonna be exposed to when fully tuned....hope this helps

  • what do you prefer, the idle break in or the heated break in where you wrap tin foil around the head !

  • Heat method, I just made the engine work with no airflow to bring the temps up.

  • Sweet because i didn't break the k4.6 HO in right on the 6th tank i just gave er full throttle the whole time, actually the wasaga beach bash that was the 6th tanks =)

  • wow is that the very first start? no messing with needles, or anything?

  • New fuel tank, new fuel lines, brand new unfired modfied Picco. I about blew it by overpriming, it was very close to flooded out. This engine had never been run before. I had the main needle out looking for an airleak and did some work on the silicone boot. Pretty sweet engine... wait until you see it run!
