  • These bugs are cool. They come every year and pay their visit to a fig tree. When I was young a caught one and tied some thread to it and went around the neighborhood flying my bug.

  • Misidentified. You have got a Green June Beetle or Peach Borer, I believe. Still does not explain why a butterfly is attacking it!

  • My first guess would be that the butterfly mistook the beetle's coloration as a nectar or mineral source and bailed out pretty quick as soon as it figured out that the beetle wasn't what it thought!

    Most butteflies have to actually land on and touch an object to identify it. They have sensory (taste) organs on their tarsi (feet) and the tips of their antennae :-)
