  • Great lookin truck. Hopefully i can have one like her some day

  • 3406A had precup head 10-4!

  • best damn truck and tractor motor ever built.. hands down just the best. hard on fuel and tranny bearings, but hell on hills and detroits and macks and cummins... lmao

  • got ride of my trucks, nearly broke me. I still have wet dreams about my 78 kw with 3408 and 5x4. thoses days are gone. but still, this ride would make an old timer happier than a bed full of hookers

  • way bad. would love to have this truck

  • @stockjeep327 ...talk to me...it could be yours....

  • Excellent start up for cold weather, anyone who's been around trucks will know that.

  • The only person that thought this didn't start good, never drove a truck. In 1978 I helped start a 1674,and the owner used a lot of Ether, man did she rattle.400,000 miles at that time.

  • LOVE THE OLD DOZER MOTOR.. LOL

  • HELPING THE ENVIROMENT!! I LIKE IT!!

  • Funny, my old '72 with a 335 used to chuff smoke rings too.

  • so what that mean that they are going to quit buiding trucks too.

  • thats a 1693 t cat

  • thats a pretty sound of that cat love it

  • Logdog01, the A models were not precup. the A's were actually the second series of 3406. The original 06's had no letter designation, other than PCTA. When cat came out with the A model, it was the first of Direct injection. Then the early B's came out, with the injection pump relocated closer to the timing gears, but still with the water jacket aftercooler. the later B's came out with the air to air coolers, and returned to the 425hp rating.

  • @The351441 My dad drove a 3406PCTA Which i think was an A model. Around like 77 or 78 is when they went to Direct Injection i believe.

  • cooool

  • u hear them guys saying cats aint shit but some high tork engines and they wouldnt have cats lol i would prefer a cat over a yamaha anytime lol o those who dont know what a yamaha is its a 318 or a 430 detroit lol

  • @MrJevonmartin plainly put, i have driven them all over the last 25 years. cat is by far the best.. all around considering fuel mileage, longevity, noise, pulliing power etc, the cat is the cadillac of diesel engines..its a shame they are going to quit building truck engines but thats their decision. epa is putting them out.. cummins is having a terrible time getting their new engine to live . cat said screw it we quit...

  • this happened to us when we were try to start the fire engine SOMEONE forgot to plug it in

  • I had a 1693 in a 72 Autocar,, I'm hatin life for selling it now,, Damn i love them old cats, They were heavy, they used alot of fuel, They would never pass emisisions, But they run forever and They would kick ass on the hills!!!

  • our kw started up just like that when it was cold

  • u dam right u would have to si low ride in that right catarpillers are for low riders lol

  • thats the most beutiful cat i ever heard

its like music to ur ears i love cats and 1693 is the best

  • ive said it many times there aint no better sound in the world than that of an idling diesel engine

  • You would have to sit with the seat all the way on the floor, as sweet as this large car is .

  • *jizzes over his screen due to the awesome sound of that old skool diesel*

  • @K1ll3rM4st3r

    that's for sure :)

Not to mention the nice white smoke.

  • @K1ll3rM4st3r

    oh yeah!

  • Old school diesel, music to my ears! Check out the smoke rings coming out the stacks....really neat!!

  • Well a 1693 cat was a precombustion chamber engine. It was very forgiving of low cetane fuels

  • i think she might need some servicing.

maybe fuel filters, octane to low just a guess

  • ...no...just old technology...hard to compare to that ISX....30 years younger...Jim.

  • Being old doesn't mean shit when it comes to heavy equipment and trucks. The older it is the better it last. And

who the hell is Jim or is that another lame ending to a sentence.

  • ...One to many tackles....eh Bucko...stay in High School...education is a desirable asset...Jim.

  • I have taken a heavy equipment class in which most the vehicles I have worked on have been below the year 97 and above 66. Are you a mechanic or a driver or are you a retiree of the last subjects. And I'm doing good in school so if your implying that I am stupid well then it explains your attitude.

  • ...congratulations...now you have 1966-1997 heavy equipment under your belt, I am sure there are more things to learn...but remember... wear your helmut, when playin football...Jim..(sorry for the lame ending)

  • go back to school bucko, diesel fuel doesn't have an octane rating.

  • excuse me cetane everybody make mistakes.

  • Well you're talking on here like you are all high and mighty, so know what you're saying before you say it.

  • well I don't intend to sound like that.

  • down in Mexico on really cold days we used to start a small fire right under the oil pan to warm up the oil before we start the engine.

  • those old cats always sound like a bucket of bolts when they're cold... lol.. love it.

  • Worst diesel I ever heard running cold was a 6.2 V-8 GM diesel.Sounds like its chewing pop cans.Come to think about it, they sound that way when they`re warm too.

  • Is it 12C minus ?

  • ....53 degrees fahrenheit...

  • Thats like a cold summer day. Maybe the engine needs service.

  • I tend to think these trucks got under-geared. CAT should have recommended a lower cruise RPM, they make lots of low RPM power, instead of gearing them to run at 2000, maybe 1600-1800 might have been better. Obviously they had some shortcomings or the 3406 would not have emerged. 3406A's sound just like them with the PC engines.

  • ....weight ....was a big shortcoming...3400 lbs (fine for a bulldozer)...4:11:1... tall rubber...60 mph @ 1600...all day long...Jim.

  • As long as you had an overdrive transmission..

  • ...why would you...have a direct??? Jim.

  • My A model with a 13-OD turned around 1900 on tall rubber at 60. With the 15 it turns about what you say which is about 1600. Most of those earlier trucks did tend to be geared to run 2000. 4.33's were pretty common. I would think a 1693 would do well with 3.70 or so.

  • Fuel costs wasnt a concern when the freight rates were decient maybe?

  • nice...

  • no better sound in the world

  • good engines just very very expensive to rebuild. From cat plan on $1,000 each cylinder back. That and you have to build everything, if your water pump goes out you have to rebuild it

  • These engines were Pre Combustion which explains the clatter as well as some of the 3406A's, they were pre combustion. It's like comparing a Powerstroke vs a pre powerstroke (6.9 and 7.3 IDI) the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI really clatter and make racket where the powerstroke just runs lol.

  • You can't explain much to the detroit lovers they don't no old cat power. Low rpm and lots of power and throaty sound. There's hwy trucks and there's work trucks Cat has it down pat.

If you want to see Cat power look at truck pulls in. Puss power in action.

  • We have a1974 KW W900 A model /with 1693 in it. gotta love the unique sound, ours started great....even in the -'s , just kackled away.

IF ITS NOT A CAT ITS A DOG!!!!

  • my dad owned a 1693 cat in his kenworth

that basterd ran his ass off too

let me tell u when he crank it up be work

oh boy let me tell u what

    it would kick ass

  • One of the best engines ever made

  • @david1693 i actually believe it was the best engine made.... cats are just the best... i drove them all.... enjoyed driving trucks with this engine the best... damn sweet motor...hard on fuel, hard on trannys but hell on hills and other trucks...lol

  • ...Got a couple real Detroits (2 stroke)... do you listen to shit...alot?

  • NO I don't listen to shit a lot! But taht cat sounds like a piece of shit!!

  • I like the smoke-rings. ^^

  • my grandfather drove a kw with a 1693 many years ago

  • I wanna see that cabover parked next to this truck

  • Hat der nen Motor, von ner Cat D 10 drin oder wie?

  • 1975 KW??? Really???!!

  • Ja, ebenso sicher wie lebe ich und atme

  • cool smoke rings

  • Nice Truck whit beautiful sound

  • 萌え☆

  • it was a cummins motor in the smokey and the bandit movie...at least in the beginning...listen to the starter..all cummins...then when he runs over the bikes at the "choke and puke", it was a detroit, we just cant tell WHICH one, but it def is...

  • Not it has that distintive pre combustion sound of a Cat

  • I wonder what a '79 brigadier being cold started at this temperature would sounds like. considering the fact of how evil sounding the brigadiers are.

  • i own a brigadier with the 3208 cat natural she starts great but smokes like hell all the time even when warm, valve guides on those engines suck!

  • The Smokey and the Bandit Kenworth had a 1693 in it too.

  • the kw in smokey and in bandit had a 3406A Pre Combustion cat in it.

  • I dont think so ive never heard a 3406 sound like that

  • Thats because it was a 3406PC-PC being pre combustion which made them sound like the 1693

  • @Hotrodx199 Not to burst your bubble hot rod but if you pay attention to the truck in smokey and the bandit you will see a gold KW hood ornament meaning 50th anniversary 1923-1973. They did not introduce the 3400 series until 1974 therefore there is no way it has a 3406A it is indeed a 1693TA Cat.

  • thats cool! i never heard a 1693 cat before. its a pretty cool sounding truck. Would it be possible to make a drive video of it? that would be cool.

  • is this the Caterpillar 1693-T,325 Hp or

Caterpillar 1693-TA, 375 HP? sounds nice

  • was already answered in earlier post but it is 425hp.

  • Best motor Cat ever made cant beat the pre combustion chambers. That is why they last so long no explosion directly on top of the piston. And they will pull like no other motor..

  • I love them ol rattlin things! I realy love the old d8's!

  • You could call that CAT Diesel engine the "Clatterpillar" due to the sound it makes.

  • You should hear all the old D8's from this era if you think this old girl rattles...

  • ....Same engine...D343??...what Cat used to get into truck sales...went on to introduce 3406....rest is history.......

  • not quite the d8h's and the old ks had the d342 engine lot bigger and pushrod this engine d343 powered 621s and the 983 loaders 769 trucks but not d8's the 342 would never fit in a kwhopp

  • I've heard pretty clattery cold diesels.

  • Nice truck. 32 years old and still running great. Just out of curiosity, what is the coldest temperature you have ever started the truck in ?

  • Temp is in the 50's F = 12C. The pre combustion chamber setup is part of why they do this. Lots of other similar diesels are cold blooded like that.

  • stilll a great looking truck even by 2days standards!

  • Is that a 325hp version?

  • 425hp version.

  • Soundin' good

  • Is it normal for a 1693 to start that bad? What happens when its freezing? Thanks

  • What makes you think that's bad? For a 32 year old truck with over a million miles on it I'd say she starts pretty good.

  • That cat mechanic say yeah it's about normal sounds like she runs great just pre cups, and cold don't agree.

  • @tiety32 hell yes.. really.. 1693 has to be the best engine cat ever built. love it

  • That thing started great.

  • i had a k dog just like that but mine was black and it had a automatic in it

and let me tell u it hauled ass too

  • i had 1 that like that

  • should have glow plugged her longer

  • What kind of transmission does this '75 Kenny have: a 13-speed Fuller RTO-12513?

  • 15-speed RT12515

  • Thanks. And how the 12515 works is... it's like the 10-speed RT-12510 but has five extra low gears.

  • Oh yea! That is an awsome sound! I sure miss engines that had unique sounds. please do a good driving video.
