I got an erection. There is nothing badder than an old 1693TA thats got rack travel set right. I drove a brand damn new one for a man in 75. That was a fine piece of equipment. Nice video....SUPER soundtrack Thanks
best damn truck and tractor motor ever built.. hands down just the best. hard on fuel and tranny bearings, but hell on hills and detroits and macks and cummins... lmao
got rid of my trucks, nearly broke me. I still have wet dreams about my 78 kw with 3408 and 5x4. thoses days are gone. but still, this ride would make an old timer happier than a bed full of hookers

The only person that thought this didn't start good, never drove a truck. In 1978 I helped start a 1674,and the owner used a lot of Ether, man did she rattle.400,000 miles at that time.
Logdog01, the A models were not precup. the A's were actually the second series of 3406. The original 06's had no letter designation, other than PCTA. When cat came out with the A model, it was the first of Direct injection. Then the early B's came out, with the injection pump relocated closer to the timing gears, but still with the water jacket aftercooler. the later B's came out with the air to air coolers, and returned to the 425hp rating.
u hear them guys saying cats aint shit but some high tork engines and they wouldnt have cats lol i would prefer a cat over a yamaha anytime lol o those who dont know what a yamaha is its a 318 or a 430 detroit lol
@MrJevonmartin plainly put, i have driven them all over the last 25 years. cat is by far the best.. all around considering fuel mileage, longevity, noise, pulliing power etc, the cat is the cadillac of diesel engines..its a shame they are going to quit building truck engines but thats their decision. epa is putting them out.. cummins is having a terrible time getting their new engine to live . cat said screw it we quit...
I had a 1693 in a 72 Autocar,, I'm hatin life for selling it now,, Damn i love them old cats, They were heavy, they used alot of fuel, They would never pass emisisions, But they run forever and They would kick ass on the hills!!!
I have taken a heavy equipment class in which most the vehicles I have worked on have been below the year 97 and above 66. Are you a mechanic or a driver or are you a retiree of the last subjects. And I'm doing good in school so if your implying that I am stupid well then it explains your attitude.
...congratulations...now you have 1966-1997 heavy equipment under your belt, I am sure there are more things to learn...but remember... wear your helmut, when playin football...Jim..(sorry for the lame ending)
Worst diesel I ever heard running cold was a 6.2 V-8 GM diesel.Sounds like its chewing pop cans.Come to think about it, they sound that way when they`re warm too.
I tend to think these trucks got under-geared. CAT should have recommended a lower cruise RPM, they make lots of low RPM power, instead of gearing them to run at 2000, maybe 1600-1800 might have been better. Obviously they had some shortcomings or the 3406 would not have emerged. 3406A's sound just like them with the PC engines.
My A model with a 13-OD turned around 1900 on tall rubber at 60. With the 15 it turns about what you say which is about 1600. Most of those earlier trucks did tend to be geared to run 2000. 4.33's were pretty common. I would think a 1693 would do well with 3.70 or so.
good engines just very very expensive to rebuild. From cat plan on $1,000 each cylinder back. That and you have to build everything, if your water pump goes out you have to rebuild it
These engines were Pre Combustion which explains the clatter as well as some of the 3406A's, they were pre combustion. It's like comparing a Powerstroke vs a pre powerstroke (6.9 and 7.3 IDI) the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI really clatter and make racket where the powerstroke just runs lol.
You can't explain much to the detroit lovers they don't no old cat power. Low rpm and lots of power and throaty sound. There's hwy trucks and there's work trucks Cat has it down pat.
If you want to see Cat power look at truck pulls in. Puss power in action.
@david1693 i actually believe it was the best engine made.... cats are just the best... i drove them all.... enjoyed driving trucks with this engine the best... damn sweet motor...hard on fuel, hard on trannys but hell on hills and other trucks...lol
it was a cummins motor in the smokey and the bandit movie...at least in the beginning...listen to the starter..all cummins...then when he runs over the bikes at the "choke and puke", it was a detroit, we just cant tell WHICH one, but it def is...
@Hotrodx199 Not to burst your bubble hot rod but if you pay attention to the truck in smokey and the bandit you will see a gold KW hood ornament meaning 50th anniversary 1923-1973. They did not introduce the 3400 series until 1974 therefore there is no way it has a 3406A it is indeed a 1693TA Cat.
Best motor Cat ever made cant beat the pre combustion chambers. That is why they last so long no explosion directly on top of the piston. And they will pull like no other motor..
not quite the d8h's and the old ks had the d342 engine lot bigger and pushrod this engine d343 powered 621s and the 983 loaders 769 trucks but not d8's the 342 would never fit in a kwhopp

Temp is in the 50's F = 12C. The pre combustion chamber setup is part of why they do this. Lots of other similar diesels are cold blooded like that.
