Man a phone doesn't need all of this. Man I just got the first Motorola ATRIX 4g and with a dual core I thought it would be future proof. Don't get me wrong I love technology but for a phone to have quad core? Isn't that pushing it? For a phone to call people lol
@parishiltonsextape3 I agree a phone doesn't really need quad core yet, but tablets and the apps developed for tablets could greatly benifit from the extra cores.
What frequency will this "Companion core" run at? Would the companion core be used while playing games as well? Going to wait until the new Tegra 3 tablets come out since it will be released this year as you said. :)
@samipakiboi the funny thing is: The "A5" chip is acctually made by Samsung and it's a watered down version of their current gen Exynos processors. Nvidia is just here to dominate.
@esaedvik How much crack did you take son? You are telling me that the samsung build A5 chip (The one found in iPad 2 and Iphone4S) (You said GPU but i think you mean the CPU) clocked at 800MHZ Dual core is better than QUAD CORE TEGRA 3 CLOCKED AT 1300GHZ?! Damn son you CRAZY?!
@MrSuperkiki I meant GPU. The PowerVR SGX543MP2 dual core GPU is really powerful even though it's considered almost old tech age wise. A5 is a System-on-a-Chip, it includes a CPU and a GPU and I was talking about the latter. The GPU does a lot of the heavy lifting in games etc. That's what not shown in this video. I'd like to see a similar graph on shader cores. In stuff like texture fetch fill rates the iPad 2 beat Transformer Prime, but in OpenGL tests it was a few % slower. Hothardware tested
@esaedvik The GPU on the Asus Transformer Prime is the Tegra 3, i don't see where you are going with all your useless benchmarking. You can easily see how well this tablet performs on highly demanding games such as Shadowgun and Rip Tide (Tegra Zone Games), and any other games that are not optimized for Quad-Core. There is really no reason to believe that the hardware on the iPad 2 is better than the Asus Transformer Prime.
@MrSuperkiki Tegra 3 is a system-on-a-chip, just like Exynos. The GPU in Tegra 3 is a Geforce ULP (single core with 12 shader cores) and it lacks in some departments. It's powerful, but it has issues. I wasn't saying the hardware on the iPad was better, I was saying that the GPU is very powerful, to the point of being more powerful in some tasks than the one found in the Tegra 3. I've got the SGS2 and TF101 myself and getting the prime asap, but it's still good to keep a level head.
@nvidia Will tegra3 (more specifically this Asus transformer prime) be able to run Windows8 besides IceCreamSandwich (what about Ubuntu too) :) ? This is awesome stuff :)
12 hours of battery life with a extra 6 with the keyboard dock Eee Pad Transformer Prime. Best out there out beats notebooks and laptops and all current tabs. One of the best camera on a tab. A 8mp with f2.4 with blacklight etc. A front facing camera 1. Something mp. A beautiful design and 499 for a 32gb compare to ipad 16 gb for that I think. And 600 for 64gb. Great display to. And high quality stuff used for the design so yea great quad core tab first of its kind. Well 5 cores
@Luger718A1 Tegra 3’s vSMP architecture actually enables longer battery life, by up to 61%, compared to Tegra 2. Specific battery life will be dependent on our partners’ devices but we’re seeing 12 hours of battery life in HD video playback.
I thought of a old perspective of life, back in the days the 4 cores represent 4 steam powerd turbines and the single core represents a mans strength to keep the wheel in motion.. Load a task and all engines peak at performance for what the task needs, when at motion the man can maintain it easily with his strength.. Nice video!
Wow all I've been hearing about is what a quad core CPU is going to do to androids already unimpressive battery life...with this information...and only a 500Mhz companion core running most of the time with regular UI interaction...it might get even better...can't wait for the first 2 quarters of 2012 to get my hands on this!
@LordSojar i DEFINATELY said that currently android battery life is "unimpressive" which means bad...but if for most of the time when your not doing intensive applications or games it only using a 500Mhz processor...then battery life would naturally and drastically be increased.....over say having a dual core 1.2 or 1.5Ghz processor with one of the two always working at those speeds even during the most basic of tasks
@tonybailey89 Which isn't true, period. It's not unimpressive. If you're judging Android devices solely on LTE based devices, that isn't an Android issue, CPU issue, etc, it's a modem issue. Android devices, as a whole, have excellent battery life. My Transformer 1 tablet gets impeccable battery life, and my Atrix absolutely slaughters almost every other phone on the market when it comes to battery life. So, I'm sorry, but even merely suggesting that Android has poor battery life is silly.
@LordSojar ok before I delve any farther into this debate...I must ask what your definition of "GOOD" battery life is...in hours....before android came out we used to have phones that some people would have to charge once a week...In a general sense...you're gettin too specific with all that LTE and this and that...they're ALL ANDROID...and comparing smartphone battery to tablets, laptops, and other devices has no relivance to "SMARTPHONE" quad cores....so bottom line...what's good battery life?
@tonybailey89 Let me answer your question with a question. Do you consider any smartphone, Android or not to have good battery life? Blackberries? iPhones? I consider good battery life to be 7-8 hrs under medium to heavy usage, 10+ hrs of talk time. There are several Android handsets that easily meet this criteria. My Atrix gets 11 hrs of talk, 8.5 of medium use, and sinks to about 5.5-6 under extremely heavy use (excluding gaming). The Galaxy SII is the same story, along with 4 others.
@LordSojar lol...ok first...Blackberry and Iphone have the best battery life on those mobile phone platforms...getting back to Android, I think we can end this debate because I see a fork in the road ahead if u know what I mean....8 hours isn't even a full day...and if you consider that GOOD battery life...I don't know what world you live in...but your entitled to your own opinion my dude lol..
@tonybailey89 My SGSII gets 2 days of complete battery life. It depends on what you put on the phone and what tweaks you have. Android has always been for more advanced users.
@tonybailey89 Oh I'm sorry, did facts get in the way? The iPhone 4S gets 9.26 hrs battery under 3G talktime, whereas the Droid Bionic, Atrix 4G, Galaxy S2 and Droid3 all crush it by at LEAST 1 hr! Web browsing? Apple and Android, nearly equal, with Apple edging out on web browsing by a few minutes at best, 45 mins at worst, but getting crushed on talk time. This isn't even an opinion, it's a fact. My 8 hour estimate is under use, and even Apple estimates battery for the 4S @ 8hrs!
@LordSojar those are manufaturer numbers I'm assuming....with all that bieng said...and with the Iphone 4S now jumping on the dual-core bandwagon...I guess this conversation just got a little more general...SO, regardless of an hour difference or less btwn platforms...if you wake up, unplug your phone at lets say 7am and 10 hours lets say (good battery life in your book) later the phone is damn near dead...that battery life SUCKS, with this new companion core that should improve can we agree?
@tonybailey89 No, those are tested numbers over at Anandtech... not manufacturer numbers. I wake up at 8am, I don't charge my phone 10 hrs later... I don't even charge it that night....but rather the FOLLOWING night (it lasts 2 days under most usage, unless I use it a lot). The companion core design nVidia has pioneered is genius, and will help significantly with extended normal usage, but will not fix heavy usage. ie, Android battery life is great, Tegra3 will only extend that lead more so.
@LordSojar ohh yes of course if your taking advantage of all 4 of those cores throught most of the day then I can imagine how fast 4 1.2 or 1.5Ghz processors can burn through even an 1850mAh battery...which is the largest I've heard of being out on the Galaxy S II Skyrocket for ATT...but normal usage...I'll cosign with you on that one...I wouldn't be surprised if you could go days again without charging your phone like it was in the pre-smartphone days...I cant wait for all this next year!
@tonybailey89 You do realize that more cores IMPROVES battery life? At the same time they're soon building these with 22nm manufacturing processes that cut power requirements all the time. Even if the batteries remained the same, battery life would dramatically improve from the single core devices we had 2 years ago. BUT at the same time screen size has doubled etc. but some screen technologies save power as well. More than others that is. Don't stare blindly at numbers on the battery or the CPU
@esaedvik My original point before all the discussion was an understanding after watching this video that this version of quad-core processors with the 5th 500mhz companion core on most of the time WILL IMPROVE on androids currently horrible battery life...and those who say 10 hours is good battery life obvioiusly have gotten over the days before android of only having to charge your phone from once every 3 days to once a week, on that note I'm guessing we can argree on the improvement?
@tonybailey89 Blackberry?! IV never owned or really used a blackberry but my perseption is that they are more of a work phone that really wouldn't be powerful to do gaming like Android and iPhones do. And also you say that android has the worst battery life, I KNOW there r android phones out there that beat the iPhones battery life considerably... Maybe u need to change "opinion",, lol
@MrTighe12 I've had an Ipod and my brother has had an Iphone...Iphone battery life murders android battery life...I can play music and we surft on my Itouch for at least 2 days before I need a charge...and with the Iphone 4 which I can't say I have...from my friends I've heard nothing but good things about that battery life...and as for my opinion...that's what makes it great it's an "opinion" which is my personal obj/subjectively made conclusion, can't wait for quad-core to drop, happy holidays
@tonybailey89 I have had an iPod and my dad has had an iPhone and battery life doesn't murder android, my first android was from Woolworth's (Safeway) and its battery life was just shorter than the iPhones, now I have moved on from my huwai and my HTC's battery lasts a fair while longer than my dads iPhone and its more powerful... what phone r u comparing to iPhone?.. sorry, in your first comment it sounded as if it was fact that iPhones battery life was longer and u where calling it an opinion.
@MrTighe12 First started off with the Samsung Moment and now I've had the Epic 4G since it came out last year...and from personal experience...I used to play games and music all...day...long on my Ipod touch and still charge only every other or every 3 days...no personal experience with the Iphone...I don't like IOS as a cellphone platform...do that with ANY android phone out from the original G1 to the Galaxy Nexus...I rest my case lol, any objections I'm all ears?
@MrTighe12 lmao damn your 13!! I appluade your maturity and not getting immature being an internet tough guy, you know how that goes...and I respect your opinion...no 2 people use their phone the same way...too many human, hardware, and software variables to put a finger on either side #fairtoway Happy holidays my man
Great choice of name! And really interesting design. But I've come to be sceptical of "ninja tricks" like this from processors. Sometimes it is better to dump all the R&D into just making four really efficient cores, rather than splitting the task. But I dunno, I'm not an engineer.
@AuDioFreaK39 I believe it is also identified as core 1. Since the companion core and the quad 'performance' cores are never active at the same time, the cores of the quad are numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4 as you would expect.
@survivorevil Yeah, im not suprised A5 beat it in benchmark since tegra was out earlier. But you must know what benchmarks aren't everything. Its how the software and games take advantage of the CPU & GPU. Thats why Tegra games look better with more physic and details at high framerate. The A5 chip GPU still beats the Tegra 3 GPU but not by much.
@ThisLadChanny im not talking about just benchmarks but everyday performance. specially iOS is very well optimized. Even the iphone 4 with a single core is really really smooth. I cant recall better looking games on android that infinity blade and real racing for the ipad 2
@survivorevil If Epic Games wasn't bought by Apple, Infinity Blade would easily be on Android, Real Racing 2, theres another game which looks better. iOS isn't really 'optimised' as people say, its just hardware accelerated whereas Android isn't yet. But ICS is, the Galaxy Nexus is the proof of that. Dungeon Defender looks better on Tegra than iPhones, you can tell by the physic along with Fruit Ninja THD has better effects.
@survivorevil Uh.... Because the A5 was much later in development, coming out over 6 months after Tegra2, and going into development a year after Tegra 2. Apple cannot beat nVidia on this front, it's not their specialty.
Tegra3 will rip the A5 to pieces in almost every performance metric less GPU, and even then, it should be very very close, with the ULP GeForce+ GPU supporting newer and better standards that the SGX MP2 in the A5. Please don't be a blind fanboy to Apple, thx.
@LordSojar and on top of that apple doesnt even design the cpu or gpu in the a5....they just buy the license and have someone manufacture it...... nVidia actually designs the GPU and this companion core idea was theirs afaik
@LordSojar the motorola xoom was the first tablet with tegra 2 and was launch on feb. The ipad 2 was launch on march. Thats not a 6 month difference. I know apple can beat the other on the hardware aspect but on the software part.
Im not an apple fanboy.I just go with what suits me better. I had a galaxy s but i dumped it because there was no updates for it. The last one was froyo and officially i havent heard anything abou gingerbread for this phone.
I got an iphone 4 and i got every last update. Even the 3gs being a 3yr old phone got the last update iOS 5.whats the point of having incredible hardware when the software is one step behind

@LordSojar i DEFINATELY said that currently android battery life is "unimpressive" which means bad...but if for most of the time when your not doing intensive applications or games it only using a 500Mhz processor...then battery life would naturally and drastically be increased.....over say having a dual core 1.2 or 1.5Ghz processor with one of the two always working at those speeds even during the most basic of tasks
tonybailey89 3 months ago
@tonybailey89 Which isn't true, period. It's not unimpressive. If you're judging Android devices solely on LTE based devices, that isn't an Android issue, CPU issue, etc, it's a modem issue. Android devices, as a whole, have excellent battery life. My Transformer 1 tablet gets impeccable battery life, and my Atrix absolutely slaughters almost every other phone on the market when it comes to battery life. So, I'm sorry, but even merely suggesting that Android has poor battery life is silly.
LordSojar 3 months ago
@LordSojar ok before I delve any farther into this debate...I must ask what your definition of "GOOD" battery life is...in hours....before android came out we used to have phones that some people would have to charge once a week...In a general sense...you're gettin too specific with all that LTE and this and that...they're ALL ANDROID...and comparing smartphone battery to tablets, laptops, and other devices has no relivance to "SMARTPHONE" quad cores....so bottom line...what's good battery life?
tonybailey89 3 months ago
@tonybailey89 Let me answer your question with a question. Do you consider any smartphone, Android or not to have good battery life? Blackberries? iPhones? I consider good battery life to be 7-8 hrs under medium to heavy usage, 10+ hrs of talk time. There are several Android handsets that easily meet this criteria. My Atrix gets 11 hrs of talk, 8.5 of medium use, and sinks to about 5.5-6 under extremely heavy use (excluding gaming). The Galaxy SII is the same story, along with 4 others.
LordSojar 3 months ago
@LordSojar lol...ok first...Blackberry and Iphone have the best battery life on those mobile phone platforms...getting back to Android, I think we can end this debate because I see a fork in the road ahead if u know what I mean....8 hours isn't even a full day...and if you consider that GOOD battery life...I don't know what world you live in...but your entitled to your own opinion my dude lol..
tonybailey89 3 months ago
@tonybailey89 My SGSII gets 2 days of complete battery life. It depends on what you put on the phone and what tweaks you have. Android has always been for more advanced users.
MrSuperkiki 3 months ago
LordSojar 3 months ago
@LordSojar those are manufaturer numbers I'm assuming....with all that bieng said...and with the Iphone 4S now jumping on the dual-core bandwagon...I guess this conversation just got a little more general...SO, regardless of an hour difference or less btwn platforms...if you wake up, unplug your phone at lets say 7am and 10 hours lets say (good battery life in your book) later the phone is damn near dead...that battery life SUCKS, with this new companion core that should improve can we agree?
tonybailey89 3 months ago
@tonybailey89 No, those are tested numbers over at Anandtech... not manufacturer numbers. I wake up at 8am, I don't charge my phone 10 hrs later... I don't even charge it that night....but rather the FOLLOWING night (it lasts 2 days under most usage, unless I use it a lot). The companion core design nVidia has pioneered is genius, and will help significantly with extended normal usage, but will not fix heavy usage. ie, Android battery life is great, Tegra3 will only extend that lead more so.
LordSojar 3 months ago
@LordSojar ohh yes of course if your taking advantage of all 4 of those cores throught most of the day then I can imagine how fast 4 1.2 or 1.5Ghz processors can burn through even an 1850mAh battery...which is the largest I've heard of being out on the Galaxy S II Skyrocket for ATT...but normal usage...I'll cosign with you on that one...I wouldn't be surprised if you could go days again without charging your phone like it was in the pre-smartphone days...I cant wait for all this next year!
tonybailey89 3 months ago
@tonybailey89 You do realize that more cores IMPROVES battery life? At the same time they're soon building these with 22nm manufacturing processes that cut power requirements all the time. Even if the batteries remained the same, battery life would dramatically improve from the single core devices we had 2 years ago. BUT at the same time screen size has doubled etc. but some screen technologies save power as well. More than others that is. Don't stare blindly at numbers on the battery or the CPU
esaedvik 2 months ago
@esaedvik My original point before all the discussion was an understanding after watching this video that this version of quad-core processors with the 5th 500mhz companion core on most of the time WILL IMPROVE on androids currently horrible battery life...and those who say 10 hours is good battery life obvioiusly have gotten over the days before android of only having to charge your phone from once every 3 days to once a week, on that note I'm guessing we can argree on the improvement?
tonybailey89 2 months ago
@tonybailey89 Blackberry?! IV never owned or really used a blackberry but my perseption is that they are more of a work phone that really wouldn't be powerful to do gaming like Android and iPhones do. And also you say that android has the worst battery life, I KNOW there r android phones out there that beat the iPhones battery life considerably... Maybe u need to change "opinion",, lol
MrTighe12 2 months ago
@MrTighe12 I've had an Ipod and my brother has had an Iphone...Iphone battery life murders android battery life...I can play music and we surft on my Itouch for at least 2 days before I need a charge...and with the Iphone 4 which I can't say I have...from my friends I've heard nothing but good things about that battery life...and as for my opinion...that's what makes it great it's an "opinion" which is my personal obj/subjectively made conclusion, can't wait for quad-core to drop, happy holidays
tonybailey89 2 months ago
@tonybailey89 I have had an iPod and my dad has had an iPhone and battery life doesn't murder android, my first android was from Woolworth's (Safeway) and its battery life was just shorter than the iPhones, now I have moved on from my huwai and my HTC's battery lasts a fair while longer than my dads iPhone and its more powerful... what phone r u comparing to iPhone?.. sorry, in your first comment it sounded as if it was fact that iPhones battery life was longer and u where calling it an opinion.
MrTighe12 1 month ago
@MrTighe12 First started off with the Samsung Moment and now I've had the Epic 4G since it came out last year...and from personal experience...I used to play games and music all...day...long on my Ipod touch and still charge only every other or every 3 days...no personal experience with the Iphone...I don't like IOS as a cellphone platform...do that with ANY android phone out from the original G1 to the Galaxy Nexus...I rest my case lol, any objections I'm all ears?

@tonybailey89 OK OK, whatever. So stubborn,,,, I give up. U beat a 13 yr old :)

Wow, awesome demonstration. Now it really makes Tegra 2 & other dual cores look outdated. Even still, it blows AMD out of their socks!

Great choice of name! And really interesting design. But I've come to be sceptical of "ninja tricks" like this from processors. Sometimes it is better to dump all the R&D into just making four really efficient cores, rather than splitting the task. But I dunno, I'm not an engineer.
VWXYZ 3 months ago
Quick question for Tegra 3 architecture engineers: Is the "companion core" identified as Core 0 or Core 4? Thanks in advance.
AuDioFreaK39 3 months ago
@AuDioFreaK39 I believe it is also identified as core 1. Since the companion core and the quad 'performance' cores are never active at the same time, the cores of the quad are numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4 as you would expect.
gxcad 3 months ago
@AuDioFreaK39 it's identified by little heart on it
Magnificat83 3 months ago
@AuDioFreaK39 It will be named Companion Core, since it'll make it more obvious of which core it is.

pachinko1972 3 months ago
@pachinko1972 i remember when nvidia made all that fuzz with its tegra 2. Apple came up with its A5 and completely destroyed it
survivorevil 3 months ago
@survivorevil Yeah, im not suprised A5 beat it in benchmark since tegra was out earlier. But you must know what benchmarks aren't everything. Its how the software and games take advantage of the CPU & GPU. Thats why Tegra games look better with more physic and details at high framerate. The A5 chip GPU still beats the Tegra 3 GPU but not by much.
ThisLadChanny 3 months ago
@ThisLadChanny im not talking about just benchmarks but everyday performance. specially iOS is very well optimized. Even the iphone 4 with a single core is really really smooth. I cant recall better looking games on android that infinity blade and real racing for the ipad 2
survivorevil 3 months ago
@survivorevil If Epic Games wasn't bought by Apple, Infinity Blade would easily be on Android, Real Racing 2, theres another game which looks better. iOS isn't really 'optimised' as people say, its just hardware accelerated whereas Android isn't yet. But ICS is, the Galaxy Nexus is the proof of that. Dungeon Defender looks better on Tegra than iPhones, you can tell by the physic along with Fruit Ninja THD has better effects.
ThisLadChanny 3 months ago
@survivorevil Uh.... Because the A5 was much later in development, coming out over 6 months after Tegra2, and going into development a year after Tegra 2. Apple cannot beat nVidia on this front, it's not their specialty.
Tegra3 will rip the A5 to pieces in almost every performance metric less GPU, and even then, it should be very very close, with the ULP GeForce+ GPU supporting newer and better standards that the SGX MP2 in the A5. Please don't be a blind fanboy to Apple, thx.
LordSojar 3 months ago
@LordSojar and on top of that apple doesnt even design the cpu or gpu in the a5....they just buy the license and have someone manufacture it...... nVidia actually designs the GPU and this companion core idea was theirs afaik
Luger718A1 3 months ago
@LordSojar the motorola xoom was the first tablet with tegra 2 and was launch on feb. The ipad 2 was launch on march. Thats not a 6 month difference. I know apple can beat the other on the hardware aspect but on the software part.
Im not an apple fanboy.I just go with what suits me better. I had a galaxy s but i dumped it because there was no updates for it. The last one was froyo and officially i havent heard anything abou gingerbread for this phone.
survivorevil 3 months ago
I got an iphone 4 and i got every last update. Even the 3gs being a 3yr old phone got the last update iOS 5.whats the point of having incredible hardware when the software is one step behind
