@lightflower I think in a recent LBC interview it was said she was married to him in the late 1960s but it didn't last long, she later married Carl Wayne in the early 70s.
That interview is quite sad, especially when she said it was easy to leave because all those she loved were already gone. She was a good actress, I don't know why she was fired.
@gggggaaaaarrrrryyyyy they often shared a producer. Reg Watson did Crossroads and went to Oz and did neighbours. Tony Hatch wrote both theme tunes so many links, The wobbly sets, however are more myth than reality. TV progs like Corrie and Emmerdale dream of the ratings Crossroads used to get.
Had she eaten one of Shouie McFees casseroles? To be fair it had taken him about 8 years to make it (from telling Meg that was what he was going in 1973 to producing the said casserole in a seperate cameo in 1981)
If ITV ever get any money and remake this at the seaside, the visitors could die of Brid flu if on the Yorkshire coast! Happily, all I've had is a Brid cold!!
She was never sacked. She asked for more money because she felt she should as she was the second longest serving actor on the show.Central did not see it that way and William Smethurst fell out with her and did not renew her contract. To add salt to the wound he wrote a story line that Benny had a pet Donkey called Miss Diane! FOOLS
I was fairly young when the original series was on and we never missed an episode, but I had never noticed how very attractive Miss Diane is, in the past.
Why did they sack Sue Hanson? She must have been a popular character to have been in it for 21 years. I never watched Crossroads I was too younf but wished I did
She asked for a raise so they sacked her as a warning to the rest of the actors not to try it on. And to rub it in, they got Bennie (her best mate in the series) to adopt a donkey and he called it Diane! Talk about a kick in the teeth.
This was 1987, 21 years ago and i still remember it well, great character, but can understand why she chose to leave, the show was on it's way out at that point, Di's death should have been the finale of a great soap
She didn't choose to leave - she was 'sacked' I was a big 'Crossroads fan' of the original series, and the acting and sets were not as 'wooden' as many media people try to suggest.
one of the biggest losses to the series post Noele Gordon

"I'd want Nollie to come back and rodger". Now Noel Gordon rodgering is something I would watch!

@unclemort1960 Thats right about comedy, its noted at the end she fancied doing Coronation Street

@KingsOakMotel TBH, Crossroads was never supposed to be *that* serious, but I think Unclemort was just being a twat so ignore the troll.

Madness to let Sue Hanson go,one of my favourite Soap characters ever,Diane Hunter.
Then the new Crossroads killed off Jill do they never learn?
dramaticguy 2 years ago 6
@dramaticguy I agree! Getting rid of all those wonderful and long-serving characters ruined Crossroads.

Central Television killed Crossroads by callously writing such loyal characters such as Diane out. It was no wonder the show ended not long after.

I agree with you morgan, she would fit into Corrie really well

I was disgusted at the way Sue Hanson was treated, surprise, surprise, the shoe didn't last long after Diane's demise.

I am surprised Sue Hanson hasn't popped up in Corrie since then at all - she would really fit in.
