Great video. At my house down by the creek we have recently found quite a large amount of these spiders. I am not one to be afraid of spiders, but my mom is terrified of them and when they come up by the house I have to move them so they don't get squished. My question is do they bite and if they do is it poisonous at all? Me and my friend have been relocating them using a salsa jar, but it would be a lot easier if we could just pick them up.
@TeamSeymour - Hi "R & T" thanks for watching my spider vid and for leaving a great comment! All most all spiders can bite, most will not bite you as you're much too big for a dinner! Also all but a few spiders use venom to subdue it's prey. Some venom is stronger that others. The Argiope I have been handling since I was 8. Only bit once as a kid, cause I squeezed it! Anyway, jars work nice as the spider, will usually walk off your hands & fall to the ground. Much easier with a jar!
@BobCsAll Guaranteed! And it is my pleasure, brother. :D Just wanted you to know that I have a male of the species in my kitchen window. He is gorgeous and a beautiful addition to my kitchen decor! :)
NO NO NO i had 8 of those in my aunt's pepperment patch all over! i took a weed wacker to it all! They and wolf spiders are on my property, and i cannot stand them! they scare the crap out of me
I have told my kids many times about how when I was about 10 I was walking through a field and this grasshopper jumped in front of me and right onto a web and I got to see this big yellow and black spider rush to it and wrap it up! It was SO cool! I've wanted for years for them to see one so my 9 year old was extremely excited to find one yesterday! we brought it home and put it in our garden. How can you tell male/female?
We used to have these living in our bushes out front. I haven't seen one for years though. :( I miss them. They're so pretty. We need their help keeping the yellow jacket population under control, (because I think there's a nest somewhere!)
I've seen these spiders in an almost chartouse floresent color. Very bright colors sometimes. Nice video, I've always been kind of freaked out by these big spiders, but your video makes them seem a bit friendlier! We had a lot of these on our farm.
I remember catching these in old peanut butter jars when I was a kid. They're really cool spiders. Believe it or not I"m terrified of spiders, but these would make their web over in tall grassy areas at my grandparents, and they would bounce on their web, and it made it easy to catch with the jar and lid. ahh the joys of being a kid :)
@clumsycalamity - Hi, that's when I started catching them, at about 8-9 years old. We would go out in a group of four or five and see who could catch the most in an hour. Then we would take them home and place them around our yards, and enjoy them and make them bounce as you described! My mom actually enjoyed teasing them and I liked to feed them flies!
I find it fascinating the way they spread their legs out to stabilize themselves when they fall off or descend from something. Spiders are perfect little acrobats!
I don't think these spiders are necessarily so easy to find. We had one family move through our garden around Buffalo about 10 years ago. A huge female (apparently much larger than usual for this type of spider, the body was about 2 inches long) made a web that spanned our whole toolshed. We moved stuff out and let her have the shed. Some more of these made nests in our tomatoes for a few years after, then they disappeared - moved on to greener pastures I guess. Never seen any more.
@nymersic - You are so right! They are not that easy to find. I search for them every summer and get excited if I can just find one! Your shed visitor was ENORMOUS! Nice you let her live there and have her spiderlings in the Spring. Either they moved on as you suggested, or the birds got them! They really stand out with their bright yellow/black coloring. Thanks for the comment and story!
@BobCsAll She really was enormous. My dad named her Big Bertha. Her progeny weren't nearly as big, but even the smallest were impressive.
But I remembered a strange thing. Do these spiders come in other colors than yellow? I looked up spiders to figure out what this beast was in our shed, and I thought I remember reading that they come in colors ranging from yellow to red. Ours was not yellow, but definitely orange! But now when I look up pictures, I see only yellow...
@nymersic - Well it's true, most all are yellow and black in color, but since this one was a bit unusual anyway, not unheard of to have more of an orange coloring. It wouldn't surprise me...nature has a few quirks!
@rocknrolla1420 - Hi "RnR", It is pretty much an outdoor spider and pet shops will not carry them. There might be someone out there that has an egg with spiderlings that have hatched for sale, but I don't know of anyone myself. Your best bet is to go hunt for a few and bring them back to the bushes/shrubs/flowers in your back yard. If you do that be sure and for the tiny male that may be in or near her web...then you might get your own eggsack for next Spring! Take care,
@Raycg2222 - Hi Ray, that is really cool, as I don't see a whole lot of them in my hunts. I think there numbers have declined ove the years; at least in Michigan. So enjoy them when you get a chance! Thanks for the comment and for watching a video! Take care,
Aww I found one of these spiders on my door at my house one summer and I thought it was venomous because of such bright colors so I killed it..): I feel bad now
@tazio998 - Ah, well said,.... many of us have been there and done just what you describe...so hopefully next time around we'll have learned something new about our spider neighbors that share this world with us, and learn to live and let live! Unfortunately many people hate and have a real fear of spiders, so the spider usually gets the shorter end of the stick! Take care and thanks for the comment,

Bob try mentioning if they are poisonous our not. even after watching you put that golden garden spider on your hand, in not tuching it one anytime soon. lol. be nice to know if they poison or not
@originalgamer001 - Thanks for the comment "OG"! All spiders but one, are "venomous," like this Golden Garden (Argiope) spider. We use the term poisonious when we ingest something that can bring poison into our body with grave consequences; venom is injected, ususlly by fangs and is used to stun, paralyze, or kill a prey. Most people are not bothered by a venomous spider bite unless they have a bad alergic reaction to the venom. I have only been bit once when I was a kid, it was my fault!
Great looking spider. Very nice detail for 480p. I hope everything turned out ok but from reading the description I'm not too sure about that. I guess I'll have to stay tuned for part II.
@angrybutt - Hi "AB" thanks for checking in! My little tiny C. Rose died a couple days ago..she just wasn't eatting much and never grew. I was saddened to see her go. But the other two keep growing and molting and have been a rteal joy for me! Take care,

We had about five of these at my dad and stemmom's old house. We made them pretty fat by tossing grasshoppers into their webs. I miss them.
