China maybe the host of the games but that doesn't mean the games = China. The Games have always belonged to all the participating nations, everywhere. The athletes worked hard to get there. Imagine how you'd feel if you're an athlete and people back home are saying they're not gonna care.

The guy at 2:40 into the video brought up an interesting point: the U.S. is so economically dependent on China that the USOC couldn't afford to boycott the Beijing Olympics even if it wanted to.
In 1980, Italy cited trade with the Soviet Union as their reason for not joining Jimmy Carter's boycott of the Moscow Olympics; our situation now is like Italy's in 1980, but to the nth degree.
BTW, I thought we should have gone to Moscow in 1980, and I do plan on watching the Olympics this year.

Besides, the olympics should be a time of open relations and negociations. The thing about nationalism is usually people who are nationalistic need an enemy. Personally, I don't think the "controversy with China" should in any way affect the Olympics. I will watch as much as I can. It's somewhat hypocritical of some people to say they won't watch because of how badly China treats its own people, yet those same people who refuse to watch the Beijing Olympics are wearing clothes made by the people they, in some respects, are turning their back to. The Olympics were always a time for peace, unity, and competition, since Athens and Sparta.
