Maria Callas would have died of a heart attack had she listened to this. If she said that comparing her with Renata Tebaldi was like comparing champagne with cognac, what would she say about Filippa? Diet coke?
HORRIBLE!!!!
Filippa Giordano's fans in Italy probably see her as their Sarah Brightman. The British pop singer Brightman also sings a lot of opera arias but she's not an opera singer; just a Broadway singer who made a career out of singing pop or alternative music. Giordano's version is not true to the Bellini original; it's not an operatically trained or experienced voice. She doesn't have the dramatic coloratura voice like Callas, Sutherland, Caballe etc. It's lovely but it's only a pop concert
If you are going to TRY and write in Italian , at least get your tenses correct, moron.
By the way your Greek sucks even worse than your Italian, seems like sucking runs in your family.
So Mr wise guy, what sort of credentials do you have that makes you think you can judge ? Do you sing yourself ? Singing in the shower don't count
Listening to Filippa Giordano singing her version of Casta Diva led me to exploring other people's interpretation of this particular piece of music. Callas and Sutherland sing it particularly well from a purists perspective. I still come back to how Filippa Giordano sings it though, I think it has something to do with the passion in which she sings the song, perhaps it's her Italian background. Regardless, Filippa brings a fresh and different way to listen to opera.
@guako1990 ASÍ ES, YO DESCUBRÍ EL GENERO MÁS HERMOSO DE TODOS, LA OPERA, DESPUÉS DE ESCUCHAR A FILIPPA GIORDANO, Y SI, ULTIMADAMENTE SI NO LES GUSTA PUES NO LO ESCUCHEN Y YA, LAISSER VIVRE
@AmericanEvita - nobody is the same, we are living in collor full world, why you dont listening only to Maria Callas. She was fantastic in this aria, but she is not alived. Nobody will sing like Callas and nobody will sing like Filippa Giordano. New Voice, new feeling, new time, new expression, more beauty women then Callas as well.
Well not always must we deny when someone tries and rich this ebene that we wish to have. She is really good in her art-level. I love operas but here I have someone who disserves to be applauded. This song is really very difficult to sing seriousness. She richest the maximum and I love it.
this is a modernisation of opera. I like classical music but do not like opera. I own this album and it is good. I think it is a good introduction to those who are not great fans, or not fans at all of opera.
@vicky58greece1 Callas is the best but there are still many great Normas who followed her. Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballe, Shirley Verrett, Jane Eaglen. This singer, Filippa Giordano is not a professional opera singer. She is an Italian pop singer. She can't sing opera.
@AndrzejIsinana44 Yes but Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballe, Shirley Verret, Grace Bumbry and Renata Scotto are still alive. They are retired opera singers but they are still alive and sang true opera. Filipa is not an opera singer. She is an Italian pop singer without any formal opera training. This is a pop version of Casta Diva so if you like pop, that's ok, but THIS IS NOT OPERA.
@AndrzejIsinana44 There are zillion singers alive today who sing better than this, not just those which are dead or retired. She is a pop singer, but it's not opera. Listen to Angela Meade singing this, for example, or Daniela Dessi. ANY opera soprano today can sing this better, even those who don't sing this role in opera, even those that are criticized most severely. Look up "Casta Diva - Norma contest" and listen to some 20 singers singing this.
@AndrzejIsinana44 Oh darlling. There are PLENTY of REAL opera singers who are not dead or retired who sing this aria operatically...and beautifully. Let's start with Renee Fleming....
@musikenergy Cecilia Bartoli, Anna Netrebko, Angela Gheorghiu, Natalie Dessay, Diana Damrau, Sumi Jo: these talented opera singers are still actively singing. Giordano is not an opera singer; she is an Italian pop singer. Didn't you hear her version of Mambo Italiano ?
@AmericanEvita That wasn't my point. Its obvious she's nothing close to an opera singer. But you implied that operatic singers were pretty much dead and irrelevant in singing this aria in your post. I had to correct you on that. And Mambo Italiano definitely isn't opera, so her singing that makes no point to me. I know pop and I know opera. Obviously you can't discern the two.
@musikenergy You're the one who's confused. Of course I can distinguish btwn opera and pop. I love opera and have loved opera for many years. I collect opera recordings, I love the big 20th century opera stars more so than today's stars; I'm a Callas fan, Corelli fan, Del Monaco fan, Domingo fan, Leontyne Price fan; I like several singers and know about the history of opera and everything about opera - so don't accuse me of knowing that. I know the difference btwn Tebaldi and Madonna
@AmericanEvita Darling I have nothing to be confused about. Your comment were negative about REAL opera singers and that's why you're getting negative feedback from not only me but other posters. Saying you know opera and your comments display two different things. Therefore, you can argue with yourself. You can reply and I will just ignore you. ROTFL!
Beautiful rendition. Seems to me to be more in the spirit of Bellini than some of the current crop of legit Normas that neither vocalize it well nor express anything. She reminds me of Adelina Patti's freedom to elaborate and improvise heard in her 1906 recording of Casta Diva.
Leave bel canto to those who know how to sing it!!! Please!
This is not quite as bad as her record of this. Personally I don't like her version of this but the record (which sold millions) was truly awful as it tried to be classical and was almostly comically inept. This is pretty embarassing also - not quiteFoster Jenkins but parts approach it. It's not that I am a purist but if people mess about with things it's got to work. This just doesn't and people think it's opera or pop - when it's neither. I don't know what it is
bravo... I see some comments about 'trained operasingers' etc., but Flippa's voice/formance is mesmerizing and passionate , makes me want to listen to classic music more ...
@Glenmed Bad analogy. Giordano is an insult to the opera music she continually butchers. She has no respect for the way the composers intended this music to be sung.
I don't like at all. I prefer this wonmerful air sunmg by a very trained operasinger. here it has become a Pop-song. That is perhaps beautiful but has nothing to do with the intentions of Bellini.
Sometimes you hear a piece of music and you go on a search to learn about the singer and her music. This is how I found Filippa Giordano. I heard this whilst in a store in London. I found out about her and bought the CD. This was five years ago and I still listen to it more often than I do with many other CDs that I have. Thank you for showing this and letting us see her as she sings. It is simply magical
I too heard filippa giordano`s beautiful voice about ten years ago when i borrowed a cd from a lending library where can i buy her cd`s from i live in leicester and tried a few music shops a couple of years ago but none of them had her music in stock at the time would i have to order a cd do you think?
Probably one of my favourite Filippa renditions, I love it.
Every word completely intelligible, every note spot on. Not what would be defined as opera in its 'pure' form so the style won't be to everyone's taste. But forget that, take it on its own merit and you can't deny it was a beautiful bit of singing.
(I think what puts some people OFF opera is the fact that it's often difficult to make out what female singers are trying to sing. No such problem here though, as I said).
I don't get why I love this unusual singer treading on thin ice - but ending up gliding across the frozen lake to land beautifully on the other side. As an opera lover, I guess I'm supposed to hate how she sings this famous aria, some purists might say butchers it, but I don't, I'm mesmerized by her version. I guess if anyone has such a unqiue, original style I'm ready for it these days. And really, the quality of her voice is quite beautiful.
We saw a Christmas concert of hers in Tokyo... Girl had a lot of nerve singing Disney crap and carols... even the Japanese audience was over her! She sang Casta Diva as an encore and we finally felt like we'd seen something...

Regardless, Filippa brings a fresh and different way to listen to opera.

jackarturo2904 1 year ago

Nobody will sing like Callas and nobody will sing like Filippa Giordano. New Voice, new feeling, new time, new expression, more beauty women then Callas as well.

AmericanEvita 1 year ago
This is terrible. This is not true to Bellini's Norma or bel canto. This Casta Diva is the Karaoke version or American Idol pop version

AmericanEvita 1 year ago 2

musikenergy 1 year ago
@AndrzejIsinana44 There are zillion singers alive today who sing better than this, not just those which are dead or retired. She is a pop singer, but it's not opera. Listen to Angela Meade singing this, for example, or Daniela Dessi. ANY opera soprano today can sing this better, even those who don't sing this role in opera, even those that are criticized most severely. Look up "Casta Diva - Norma contest" and listen to some 20 singers singing this.
jewelmarkess 1 year ago
@AndrzejIsinana44 Oh darlling. There are PLENTY of REAL opera singers who are not dead or retired who sing this aria operatically...and beautifully. Let's start with Renee Fleming....
musikenergy 1 year ago
@musikenergy Cecilia Bartoli, Anna Netrebko, Angela Gheorghiu, Natalie Dessay, Diana Damrau, Sumi Jo: these talented opera singers are still actively singing. Giordano is not an opera singer; she is an Italian pop singer. Didn't you hear her version of Mambo Italiano ?
AmericanEvita 1 year ago
@AmericanEvita That wasn't my point. Its obvious she's nothing close to an opera singer. But you implied that operatic singers were pretty much dead and irrelevant in singing this aria in your post. I had to correct you on that. And Mambo Italiano definitely isn't opera, so her singing that makes no point to me. I know pop and I know opera. Obviously you can't discern the two.
musikenergy 1 year ago
@musikenergy You're the one who's confused. Of course I can distinguish btwn opera and pop. I love opera and have loved opera for many years. I collect opera recordings, I love the big 20th century opera stars more so than today's stars; I'm a Callas fan, Corelli fan, Del Monaco fan, Domingo fan, Leontyne Price fan; I like several singers and know about the history of opera and everything about opera - so don't accuse me of knowing that. I know the difference btwn Tebaldi and Madonna
AmericanEvita 1 year ago

Please!
chopin1949 1 year ago

This is not quite as bad as her record of this. Personally I don't like her version of this but the record (which sold millions) was truly awful as it tried to be classical and was almostly comically inept. This is pretty embarassing also - not quiteFoster Jenkins but parts approach it. It's not that I am a purist but if people mess about with things it's got to work. This just doesn't and people think it's opera or pop - when it's neither. I don't know what it is

Brava!
