Accompong is Ghanian. He was the eldest brother of 7 princes and princess of a Ghanaian regeant. They came to Jamaica in the early 18th century and resisted the though much less the act of enslavement. His siblings, Nanny (jamaica's only heroin), Cojo, Quaoku, Qulau (my GGGGGrandfather), Quashi, Coffe also helped to fight even as far as Haiti!. Cojo eventually signed a peace treaty with the British in exchange for restitution by way on self government and ownership of the territories.
i love my people so much, rich histroy, my grandmother told me we are from ghana , ashanti tribe, my great great grandmother on my fathers side was taino, i am JAMAICAN and so proud, i am from St. Catherine, family in St. Anns, Portland, all over, we jus need to remember our royal african blood and be proud.
@kinggnoz We are not of Royal African blood. The Royals in Africa collaborated with the European slave traders by capturing our forefathers and mothers and sell them into slavery and the Ashanti royals of the Ashanti were one of the biggest slave trading groups on the continent. We are descendants of everyday people skilled workers, artisans, market people, warriors and rebels not royalty unless of course it was the few who objected to the slave trade.
The Maroon peoples of Jamaica are the reason we are free to this day. The Africans were invited by the Taino/ Caribe Indians who showed them the landscape of the area and ACTUALLY fought along side them when they defeated the Spanish. During the Spanish-English war, the Spaniards came up with the idea that if these people would fight off the british while the spaniards escaped that they would grant them freedom. they with LITTLE trouble had big bad england begging them for peace lol.
@Xaymaicana It depends of which set of maroons you are talking. Maroons actually worked with the British to suppress larger African revolts in Jamaica, some also worked with the British by returning escaped Africans. Big up Nanny.
My mother descended from Maroons. These are powerful people. I made a film called Legacy, which is an art film exploring the issues of slavery, family and Maroon rituals.
The Maroons were not always loved though. Because they handed back slaves in exchange for their self-determination. It took years to be seen as wonderful now. :-)
haters shut the fuck up , respect our culture and know that we are great people , know that slavery did not civilize us , rather it ruined our family structure , it made it possible for the white man to steal our sacred customs and ways of life and worship while they imposed upon us their made up shit , down to our very last names.........they can never conquore us , we are unconquoreble ...and you fake jews pretending to be that which you are not , the day is swiftly approaching , war again ,
the maroons where fighters they beat the shit out of the europians africans where great those europians had luck because of their weapons if they had not all africans in the caribian killed them!!!!!!!!!! but peace and much respeckt to the maroons in jamaica and the other maroons in the caribian!!!!!!!
respect to the maroons and all jamaicans...fighting people; only now we must stop fighting each other and recognize the true enemies within & without...rasta liveth!
From the era of enslavement of Africans from Africa to the Americas: Caribbean, North, Central and South America, I agree that the greed of the Europeans perpetrators ought to be blamed for the evils of slavery. Not the Maroons! It was all about survival. Thanks to Nanny, thanks to our Haitain family, thanks to our warriors in Brazil, thanks to our warriors in North America, thanks to all freedom fighting Africans all over, do not let into the blame game for wish they relish; unity is the key.
hey guys, im haitian, if i didnt know any better i would think that they were haitian, like music and the vibe is so similar to a a vodou ceremony, respect to all my black brothas and sistas, god bless the ones who keepour traditions alive, ayibobo!!!!
It's all about the timeless African Traditions across the entire Continent (which through the agency of vodou) simultaneously deals in this world & in the living worlds of the ancestors, etc.
And the African 'traditions' live; because they are based on actual & practical experiences of this world & of other worlds.
These traditions ARE NOT based on silly belief systems, like the childish christianity and islamic insanity of criminal invaders to Africa.
I am Haitian, and lived in Jamaican rural communities for some time. Any belief system, can be easily twisted to manipulate and oppress human beings. We must unite, in spite of different spiritual beliefs... To call Islam or Christianity silly can easily be perceived as pushing those in the Diaspora who believe in them, away.
If 'those in the diaspora' perceive that the rubbishing of idiotic ideologies of CRIMINAL INVADERS is 'pushing' them, then there is even more reason for them to rid their minds of the christian and islamic religious rubbish of CRIMINAL INVADERS!
There is a huge difference between the victims and the religious ideologies, which has been brainwashed in their enslaved minds down the generations.
We are after the brainwashed religious mental poisons of CRIMINAL INVADERS. I'm 'pushing' no one.
agree w/ you there...I dnt believe in Islam or Hinduism but tht doesnt mean I shud call t silly...you see wht ppl dnt get is "wht if I was born into this race/culture" thts wht they would believe in if they were born into it...so not cool to call ppl beliefs silly....just as long as you know who YOU are nd wht YOU believe in nd not following anything else
And when the religious rubbish of criminal invaders are used to poison minds, displace/destroy age-old indigenous practices, and enslave minds in ignorance & the worship of criminal invaders, then such beliefs SHOULD BE targeted for extinction
The people & the 'belief' system are different realities
Yes, we should spare the people; but we should not spare or promote destructive beliefs
So true^^^~~> "And when the religious rubbish of criminal invaders are used to poison minds, displace/destroy age-old indigenous practices, and enslave minds in ignorance & the worship of criminal invaders, then such beliefs SHOULD BE targeted for extinction"
wht do you mean whn you say the other worlds...and tht they simultaneously deals in both worlds...wht does tht mean?...I hav alot of stories abt spiritual world in my own family but still dnt complete understand and I knw its directly related to African traditions but because of our lack of knowldge we tend to fear nd degrade things like tht
Empress, by 'both worlds' I mean this physical world & the same 'spiritual world in your own family'
The human mind is able to take one's consciousness everywhere & at different levels in the Creation
The physical world is one such level
The world where the ancestors temporarily reside is yet another level in the Creation
Africans & many other peoples have had this kind of knowledge through Direct Experience, long before criminal invaders & their imaginary religions existed to create confusion
'All this' comes from dedicated, deep, diligent and relentless research, both 'inside' and out.
Total Knowledge of life and of its assured march towards Perfection has always been available to those who are keen to know the truth
It is also very easy to conclude that if Africans were not tapping into real inner experiences (not religious imaginings) then their practices could not have lasted for millennia or survive the violent enslavement of criminal invaders & enslavers
no disrespect but many maroons joined forces with the British to squash slave rebellions in Jamaica suh is not a absolute ting some a dem sellout di ting. Big up nanny she she a di real warrior. Chief Cudjoe= Sellout
facts are facts so where is this ignorance argument coming from? Many slave rebellions in Jamaica failed because the Maroons were used by the British to quell the rebellions...did i say something incorrect?
When one states half-truths, then one is in effect 'incorrect'.
The Maroons were as much victimized by the beastly 'divide and dominate' brits as were those Africans who remained more completely enslaved.
The beastly brits and other evil Europeans were the culprits, and bear full responsibility for ALL of the criminal atrocities, from the kidnappings in Africa to the enslavement in the Caribbean. They also bear FULL RESPONSIBILITY for any and all slavery-supporting actions of the Maroons!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you realize you are simple stating common knowledge right? and actually no the Europeans are not fully to blame since it was Africans who sold other Africans to Europeans...
The evil european criminal invaders are TOTALLY culpable; because it was THERE slavery system!
Africans DID NOT transport Africans across the oceans into slavery!
If some criminal invaded your space and put a freaking gun at your eurocentric head to make you sell your mother, and do other unspeakable things with her, I know that you would gladly comply. And why? You have no sense of virtue.
There are three ways to be a prisoner direct war fare, indirect warfare, and the combination of direct/indirect warfare if the AFRICAN ELITE CAN'T DECIFER THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FRIEND OR ENEMY THE3Y WILL DEFEAT THEMSELVES you don't have slavery when people can define there enemy and esablish content.
You dont make sense. Do your research as to why Cudjoe's Group did what they did. You will see that it may have had to be done that way to maintain their own sovereignty on the Island as a nation within a nation. Think before you say certain things. The whitemen knew exactly what they were doing.
I love this video & plan to visit Accompong on 6th Jan 09,I have Maroon blood on both sides of my family not that you can tell because of all the mixing that has been done to my blood lol this amongst other things in my Jamaican heritage makes me PROUD to be who I am. Thank u
Many Jamaicans are descended from the Coromantee/Kromanti, who were apparently Ashantis who rebelled against the Asantehene and were sold across the sea. So there are some Twi words and rhythms that survive in some parts of Jamaica. Kenneth Bilby has released a CD of some of this music, entitled "Drums of Defiance."
What?!Some Ashanti's who rebelled against the Asantehene? obviously you know nothing about Asante culture. No Asante would rebel against the Asantehene The Asante was a a very cohesive and loyal group. These people may have Asante as their base but no Asante will sell his own, Unless they were slaves already or they were captured in war, whereby they could be sold away because that is what you did with prisoners of war and slaves.

Don't perpetuate the usual ignorance and self-loathing.
Don't blame the VICTIM MAROONS!
Don't join the evil Europeans and victimize the Mighty Maroons AGAIN!
ALL the atrocities that took place during the criminal kidnappings and enslavement should be placed squarely at the feet of the EVIL EUROPEANS!
Maroons were FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL across the ocean; BECAUSE OF THEIR KIDNAPPING FROM AFRICA!
The beastly brits and the other evil Europeans are COMPLETELY responsible, not the Maroons!
