yeah i remember my dads old 2006 ram 6.7 cummins 3500 crew cab got 19city and 20 somethin on the highway. (calculated it out by hand) so a fulll size truck getting pretty close to this smaller suv is pretty sad...cummins should build a smaller cummins motor for their chrysler
i just love the way in america they have these promotional videos exploring the diesel engine with these eco stickers on the side of the promotional cars, whereas most of the rest of the world is dominated by the diesel engine.
Hey chillibeans2 where u getting that it's 2 wheel drive. It's all wheel drive and still has optional transfercase for low and high real 4wd. Check ur stats before u type jibberish
Thats US mpg... in the UK I get 24 to 25 city - Highway/Motorway varies 27 to 34MPG UK..... Mate with Audi A4 2.0 Diesel gets 29... which is a lighter car and smaller engine...
(oh and the Audi keeps breaking down-same year as my jeep - same mileage)
i bought an 04 gc and i specifically asked the salesman is there a diesel coming out and he said no way not in the us. I will never buy another jeep again because I would have bought this truck 6 months later and loved it instead I got garbage that always has problems next time it's toyota 4runner I recommend you all do the same
@CincinnatiArmory Well you were the one that asked a saleman, they barly know about whats on the lot, you aked if something is coming out that the owner of the dealership would not even know!
@CincinnatiArmory well sorry for your troubles but I dont have a single thing wrong with my zj that I cant handle maybe you don't know what you are doing or you dont have a good jeep just remember one rule built not bought if you know what you are doing you can make that sheet metal into the shiniest piece of gold you ever seen.
This video prompted me to post my first post ever on here b/c the people who posted comments about other diesel vehicles that are both 20yrs old and have larger engines getting better mpg are 100 percent correct!!! This cherokee should do much better on mpg!! I have a 1987 chevy truck that has a 6.2L v8 diesel and it gets 24mpg on average/ not only highway driving! I can set the cc @ 74mph on the interstate while pulling a loaded car and still get at least 20mpg all day long!!!no bs!
That is impressive for an SUV. One doesn't normally expect a 4wd SUV to return more than 20mpgs in either city or highway driving. Despite the stigma surrounding the diesel engine, I don't believe that diesel is, or has ever been as bad an option as we've been lead to believe in the past 30 years.
Mercedes E300D had a 36 mpg rating. Merc suckers stopped producing those vehicles. E-class are quite heavy, I wonder what an SUV is apart from being heavy.
17/22 mpg STINKS!!! In 1987, Jeep sold a very few Cherokees fitted with a 1.7 liter Renault turbo that delivered 35 mpg hiway. This is 20 year old technology, folks! WTF has Detroit been DOING for the past 20 years, designing, building & selling gas-hogs fitted with a bunch of luxury options that aren't needed & that break-down requiring expensive 'factory-trained' technicians to fix. BULLSHIT! Non-computerized systems are often more reliable, inexpensive & efficient.
so the stuff to reduce polution makes engines less efficient?!
I know when cold, catalytic converters pollute more but thats wierd.
what have u got? EGR, catalytic convertors and dpf (we have these in uk), what else? these r common rail arent they u should still be getting 30mpg, we get nearly 40mpg from a common rail 3.0tdci ford!
nope, in the uk we drive in mph and our roads r fast and twisty so should use more fuel, plus our moterways r 70mph, even the tiny roads r 60mph, the slowest we go is 30mph in town whereas in usa u do 15 dont u?
an english gallon is slightly bigger though, there r 0.8 american gallons to a british gallon I believe.
oh and in europe on some roads no speed limits at all exist apart from minimums! u get nutters in mercedes cruising at 150mph!
Range Rover never had a specific tdi emblem on it, AND it is NOT EU4 emissions rated.
The Range Rover will have one of two 2.5 diesels, either the old school 2.5 Land Rover diesel, or slightly newer 2.5 straight 6 diesel from the BMW. That BMW M51 Diesel is between 114 or 141, age dependant, it delivers 164 ft.pounds torque.
Thats a far cry from the Mercedes CRD Diesel, delivering 215hp and 376 ft.pounds torque and is EU4 rated, which restricts the engine a lot.
the range rover classic (origional shape but 5 doors) never used landrovers old 2.5 diesel even in turbo form, it used the VM2.4 then 2.5td then used the 200 and 300tdo which had 111bhp and 200lbft torque, the later range rovers had the bmw inline 6 but the torque was more than the TDI not 164, still a weak engine.
I didnt give any figures btw apart from mpg.
oh and my dad has an a4 2.0tdi 140bhp, that does 55mpg on a run and weighs about 1200-1400kg although the trip meter thing says 29town
If they were that bad the military wouldnt use them.
Jeep diesels used to use the VM diesel BTW, a terrible engine, kept blowing head gaskets although land rover tried same engine for a short while and rejected it!
The british military use the defender wolf landrover.
The CRD isnt a VM engine is it!?
Pay attention.
Land rovers have been used on epic world trips, they r the most commonly used due to them being easy to fix by anyone with limited tools and good on fuel.
The new ones r just like anything else modern though, to much electric trickery to need computers to fix.
Most reliable 4x4 is toyota landcruiser, the UN have over 60,000 of them.
Haha I have not heard any good things about land rover recently. My friend has an 87 Range Rover Classic (160k mi) and it breaks down more than my 89 cherokee(208k mi)
is that a reply to me? Cant tell. my friends RR has a 3.5ltr v8 or something. . . Freekishly small and WAY underpowerd. But the engine has had no trouble(fresh rebuild). But the chassie, interior, and exterior are kind of in rough shape(he uses it offroad). All the springs are sagging BAD! There like an expensive cherokee. . .
What power numbers would you expect a n/a 3.5ltr v8 to put out? It also has to push a 5400lb vehicle. My 4.0 cherokee motor would push that thing better than that v8. They put way to small on an engine in them at that year.
Italian VM 2.5L Turbo Diesel - 140 hp, 236 ft lb torque - used in overseas XJs
4.0L I6 EFI "Power Tech" - 177 hp @ 4750 rpm, 220 ft lb @ 4000 rpm - used 87-90
4.0L I6 MPI "Power Tech HO" (High Output) - 190 hp @ 4750 rpm, 220 ft lb @ 4,000 rpm - used in 91-95 and updated in 96-01 to 225 ft lb torque @ 3000 rpm (00-01 models use a distributorless ignition system)
So ya it does come with some freakishly small engines. . But the I6 is the most common and most reliable by far. I have one in my 89 and it scoots allong considerign it has 33" tires and steel wheels.
Pretty sure. Never heard of the 2.1 destroying cylinder heads. How does it happen?
Don't know what about a Bluetec engine for the cherokee. I'm not the all seeing. With some of those engines it would be slow. But you would be surprised how peppy a 4cyl can be.
Then again i havent seen a cherokee with anything but the 4.0. . . Would be a rare find.
'87...... XJ: 173hp at 4500rpm, 220lbft @ 2500rpm, redline 5000rpm So its not much better but still. 8 vs I6 (inline) But still 200lbft for a 5400lb suv?
I am proud to call it my car as wel, and had it chiptuned and it has 625 nm and 275 bhp topspeed is 225 kmh, 0-100 is just 7 seconds and the feull consumption is a lot less

correction; the bmw inline 6 diesel had 134bhp @4400 and 199lbft at 2300rpm.
the older vm diesels that were also used in some earlier jeeps but blew up left right and centre due to head faults had;
2.4vm 112@4200 183lbft@2400rpm
2.5vm 119bhp@4200 2.9lbft@1950rpm
oh and the tdv6 had174-188bhp4000rpm
288lbft@2000rpm to 325lbft@1900rpm, the tdv6 is on late models, they now have a tdv8.

Ford Mondeo weight is only 1200kg + more aerodynamic.
Jeep weights 2250kg and has a fulltime 4wd system, and is less aerodynamic.
Ford will be scrapped a long time before the Jeep.
another example from my own experience, things like tyres wear for 20-25,000 on a road car at best. Jeep typically for about 40-60,000 miles!
There is simply no comparison!!
Close friend has audo a4 on a 55 plate 2.0tdi, city 29mpg & motorway mid to late 30's.
My 3.0 Jeep 24 city and normally 33 motorway.
