i have to ask: what young person is going to be attracted to a hybrid?
all young people want is something fun to drive, has a good engine note, and is reasonably quick and reasonably practical. it's not rocket science here, and a hybrid engine should not be used in this car.
my point is that in an effort to appeal to young people, i bet that they'll actually attract a lot of older people who are ecologically conscious (and for whatever reason won't buy a diesel) and want to save a bit of cash while still being surrounded in luxury.
building a good, firm-riding fast car is a safer bet to make sure young people are the ones buying it.
i'm young as well, and after loads of research, i've concluded that hybrids are less fuel efficient than the average diesel, and in they require a huge environmental impact to be made in the first place. i therefore do not see the point to a hybrid car.
never heard of diesels being unreliable. granted, i live in america where diesel cars are few and far between, but owners of the few diesel bmws, mercs, and vw's that are imported scream about how reliable and economical they are.
and honestly, you're the first person i've ever hear say that they're unreliable.
and anyway, are you not aware that every 10 years or so, the hybrid battery pack needs replacing for about $7,000?
well that's because they brought over the 335d, which is the most expensive 3 series ever that isn't wearing an m badge. it only gets 36 mpg, which is good for a sports-sedan, but terrible for a green machine.
if i were bmw, i would have imported the 320d and priced it slightly less than the base 328i they have here. that gets 48 mpg and still does 0-60 in 8.4 seconds.
but you're the first person i know who has owned a diesel, or a bmw for that matter, to have called them unreliable.
i'm aware that hybrids are more fuel efficient in the city, but diesels are more fuel efficient on back roads an highways.
i currently drive a mazda 6 with a 3 liter v6 gasoline engine. i struggle to get 19 mpg in it, but i have a lot of fun driving it. bottom line: fuel here costs about 1/3 the price it does in italy, and i can afford to have a powerful car (220 horsepower). but if i were to ever buy a fuel efficient car, i'd buy a diesel no doubt. my next car will probably be a 335i though.
fact: the honda insight costs the same as a golf with a diesel, but packs far more technology to encourage green driving and ultimately save fuel. but in average driving, it only achieves 0.2 mpg more than the golf's hum-drum diesel engine. what is the point of all this technology? there isn't any!
a diesel with an engine that's ignition is stopped at idle is more reliable, more environmentally friendly (in the long run) and even more economical!
