I have lived in the U.S. all my life and in my public school we had to learn all the nations, their capitals and where they were located on a world globe in grade school. This was in 5th grade (for me 1986), so a great deal of the nations have changed names, disappeared or split since 25 years ago, but I know that in our public school EVERYONE would have been able to at least locate major countries on a map. To generalize one response by one person to an entire nation is inaccurate.

@deltaolemissfan That's an interesting question. I'm sure she can identify the continents. She's really not a stupid person despite video clips on the news. But it would be interesting to see how many people could identify most of the countries in the world. I suspect I could get more than half. I don't deal with Africa much so I might miss a lot of the tiny ones. I think i'd get most in South America though. But I bet about 10% of the people know where Zambia and Botswana are.

Actually, America is ambiguous in English, as it is used more commonly to refer to the United States of America. So saying that it is only a continent is a faux pas on your part.

But it would be interesting to see how many people could identify most of the countries in the world. I suspect I could get more than half. I don't deal with Africa much so I might miss a lot of the tiny ones. I think i'd get most in South America though. But I bet about 10% of the people know where Zambia and Botswana are.

OK .... but if you were asked to name as many countries on the African continent as you can I'm sure that you could name quite a few. Give it a try. The point of this video is that America is mocked by much of the rest of the world. While Palin might have some survival smarts in a state who's GDP comes mainly from oil and recreation, beyond that it is obvious that she is not erudite in a way that we would expect of a national figure with her ambitions.

@Guttan2k Well... not exactly. I didn't see any polar bears or penguins there, but I don't think that is an unreasonable question to ask given that latitude at which Sweden is located. Sweden isn't a nation that you hear a lot, whereas the United States is. I am from Los Angeles, and was asked "oh you live next door to any movie stars" or "have you ever met this person?" No, I haven't! But it's not an unreasonable question to ask.

i think it is hard for americans 2 travel outside the US. i am british thanks to deal from Jet.2 my husband and i travel to at least 2 european countries each year. it is alot cheaper for people in europe 2 travel. Americans only get 2 c europe from backpacking or cruises. i av visited america and i av met sum lovely bright people. we are hoping to do a road trip across america next year but it all depends on the secruity in airports. rember about 60% of u.s dont own a passport.
