The BMW m3// and the Mustand GT are evenly matched. Though in a lone run, i would have to lean on the BMW's side. If you've seen the way they both handle, i think the M3// would take the Mustang.
The mustang does not have a big block. It has a 32 valve dual overhead cam. It may have 1 more liter but it also produces 100 ft lbs of torque. With a minor tire it will make 30+ more hp.
@hedrick5286 This GT is a 24-valve (or more commonly known as a 3V [three valves per cylinder]). The Cobras from 1996-2004 had 32-valve (or 4V) motors, and the new 5.0L is also a 4V.

@1PDee youve never driven a mustang. in stock form most are mild mannered. ford makes the mustang from a standpoint to allow large gains from aftermarket parts. when an intake and tune nets 40hp you know they didnt just happen t build it that way. you can make a mustang handle better than an m3 with a stick axle, its not rocket science its just understanding suspension. when you mod an m3 it costs in upwards of 1300 for a brand name muffler that nets 1-3hp, the reason is that they already maxxed
@1PDee the m3 out from the factory because thats what you pay for. two different cars for two different spectrums they both do their own thing well. especially now the newer mustangs are direct competitors in handling and speed to the best europe has to offer without any required modifications, its not a callout its just an observation

The bmw's motor is so well engineered that unlike american cars you dont have to go spend 20 gran just to buy a motor that can handle 1000hp then build it spend more money just building it. as far as suspension goes bmw has plenty of suspension modifications. their's a reason why the M3 GT was made
@Storm7289 and yes the mustang GT vs the M3 stock is comparable i will give you that. but again if you were to introduce modifications into the picture the mustang couldnt even keep up. yea your oberservation of the mustang being cheaper may be true. but keep in mind the mustang again doesnt have nearly as attention to detail and engineering as the BMW. the motor is not made to handle more than 600-700 horsepower without either building it or putting a different motor in. just my opinion
@1PDee yes 10 to 20 grand isnt a reasonable amount. have you heard of the terminator? can handle 800rwhp without opening the motor up. mustangs are built to handle a lot of power you apparently are not very experienced with them. the new gt can put out 700whp on only 9psi on stock internals. the boss was tuned by hennessey to do 890whp on 11psi. the m3 is not the best car to run boost, its a high compression low displacement high revving motor.
@1PDee the mustang has a lot of attention to detail actually if youve ever seen the 2012 boss 302. they took a regular gt and changed over 3000 things, its a superior track car. m3's are maxxed out in bolton terms. doing things like intake tune exhaust doesnt net you very much since the already engineered it to the maximum leaving nothing but pure performance. when you get an american muscle car they give you the car and leave a bunch on the table for the aftermarket.
@1PDee the new 5.0 mustang motor is naturally a more suitable platform for making power, idk why you dont think so, its actually very advanced. its already been put through hell by aftermarket companies making well over 1200hp. it would be the m3 that couldnt keep up because for the muscle cars you can gain 40-50whp from simple exhaust intake and tune, whereas the m3 does not get as much, this is also partly due to the m3 being a much smaller motor
@1PDee btw did you hear they are switching the next m3 to a twin power inline six just like the old days. i liked the 6 cyl m3 better, it was a true testament to performance, in the early 2000's they made a 3.2l 6 cyl that put out 333hp (us).. to this day nothing beats that without being something bigger like a 3.7 and still they can barely do so. im sure the next one will be great too, although id like to see a n/a 6 cyl again im pretty sure it will be turboed :/

For as much crap as the importers talk about Mustangs I would think that a BMW sports car that costs roughly $20-$30 more than the Mustang GT should already be pretty well tuned and should beat the car that costs half of what it costs.

But do research: The new 5.0 is faster in a straight line than the new M3, and only lags behind on Willow Springs (a road course, left AND right turns) by a tenth of a second. Both great cars, sure. But the Mustang is just as fast. The Boss is even faster. And the GT500 is EVEN FASTER. That's life.

@ryanstefanelli not really. from an engineering standpoint, the s54 is one of the most advanced engines today... it makes 104bhp/liter... which is a standard only achieved in the highest echelon of motor design. The m3 unites luxury with performance and that's what it does best. The mustang is just a big block v8... nothing special. It will always be a mustang (though i admit they do look great nowdays)
as a side note.. the new e92 v8 4.0L m3 pushes 103bhp/liter.. the mustang does 85bph/L
@jlcool007 No denying that it's a great engine. The true comparison is at the cost level though, and it's a bit fruitless to compare a $33k car to a $60k car in anything but performance. Though you overstate the luxury of the M3 -- the current generation 3-Series really doesn't have a great interior. The Mustang also has better user technology than the 3. BMW will correct this I'm sure, but the point is that the Mustang is dangerously competitive with the M in almost all categories.

The regular GT still is not compared to an M car. You can compare it to 328i but when the road turns twisted even that will go faster around the track.
I don't know if the m3 could out do a mustang on a track. Look at the boss 302 lacuna Seca model. That was purposely built for racing and i have been reading up on it and it was purpose built tobeat the m3 which it did.

Stupid kids posting nonsense. Mustangs didn't make much power, but Ford sold more of them each year than BMW sold in all of their models combined. While BMW was making power, Ford was making sales. The 2011 Mustang sold over 11,000 in the first month. Tell me which models combined will hit that number in the first quarter.
The next M3 is rumored to have a Twin Turbo V6 with 440 hp. Barely going to beat a car costing 1/2 as much and get creamed by the Boss 302, GT500, & GT350.

Look at the engines Porsche puts in their cars a 3.8L flat 6 TT, and its kicking all the major car performance manufactures asses. Don't forget about the 3.6L TT used in the GT2 RS, but at 23 psi. There is a video of a single turbo 2011 5.0L making approx. 543 rwhp at 6 PSI from a turbo through an AUTOMATIC so what is your point? My comment was accurate whether you like it or not.
@Marc99GT I was regarding your judgment on the rumored next generation M3, I highly doubt that BMW is going to build the next generation M3 to fall short to a mustang. My point is that it just may have a V6TT, but it will be twice the car a mustang will be, justifying its price. And that live rear axle on the mustang is not doing ford any favors by keeping it around, other then driving the cost down. this is obviously by opinion, and i was comparing the Porsche TT to its own competition.
@Oddfull I would hope that BMW would set its sites alot higher than a 35K Mustang since they will probably over 70K for an M3. It is a major accomplishment by Ford that has a 35K Pony car running with an M3 at all performance levels. It hardly looks good for BMW to be going after a Mustang actually. They need to deal with the CTS V Coupe and sedan which are more of its direct competition.

Motortrend did the test of a 2011 M3 vs a 2011 Mustag GT on a road course and I believe less than tenth was the difference and the Mustang beat the M3 at the drag strip. They have similar power/weight ratios so the M3 is not doing any damage to a new GT. The Boss 302 slaughters anything from BMW on a road course with no problems at all. I drag raced a 99 GT into the 10s so I built them and know them well. Google "The Going Thing MM&FF"
@Marc99GT you still don't understand my point though, a mustang against an m3 on a real race track would be slaughter. that m3 handles a thousand times better than anything american made for that matter. and the bmw's are in the super car class. mustangs are cheaper made and don't have near the closeness to detail. you cant compare the two in terms of real world use. the mustang is for going fast in a strait line. the bmw is for maneuvering at high speed. and ide rather have an m3 any day :)

I'm a former Mercedes Benz Tech and own a repair business so I know the costs to maintain just about any car. In all out performance, the New M3 is only slightly better than a new GT at twice the cost. As far as the Boss 302, nothing BMW makes is close and these are the facts.

This very accurate imo. The GT's prior to 2011 were not very fast but with the same mods as the one shown in this video, the race is more than likely what will happen in the real world. The Stang will pull at higher speeds and probably should have from the line but automatics are always better from digs
Lets get this straight....the 3.2 L inline 6 that bmw first released in 1999/2000 was still whipping the Ford Mustang GT 9 years later...it took 11 years for Ford to better that technology. I'm psyched to see BMWs next 6 cylinder. The v8 they put in the current M3 added too much weight, so its not a game breaking as the e46 was.
That mustang V8 did pretty well against the little 6-cylinder German car. Of course the mustang had 1 & 1/2 times the engine displacement, and it was still beaten by a smaller engine German car. American cars are just slow! Very much like their people.

@misfit2910 The 2011 Mustang is 1/100th of a second slower than a M3 on tracks...yeah. And the GT was faster than the M3 in the quarter. Theres a video of a magazine racing them here on youtube, that had to run them about 15 times to get a non tie, and the GT to improve by 1/10th of a second.
@xLuckydemonx Was I talking about the 2011 GT? No... I was talking specifically about this 2005-2009 model. I own a bolt on 2006 GT and a have a very good friend with an e46 M3. In no way will my mustang stand a chance in the bends with an E46 M3, but I will take it all day long on a strait road. The 2011 is a completely different level of mustang than the first model s197's were. Ford specifically built the 2011/2012s to go up against a class of cars such as the E92 and the C63.

No DCT M3 has run low 12s stock because C6 Corvettes beat them all day auto or manual. They are far too heavy with their power to run low 12s bone stock. Show me where it is documented that a DCT M3 has run low 12s bone stock. Motortrend ran 12.6 with the DCT M3. I can only assume you are talking about a C5 ZO6 because you can't get a C6 ZO6 for 35K unless it has a ton of miles on it.
I'm still wondering why people are comparing the GT to the M3 and even thought the M3 just barely, and I mean BARELY beats the GT why aren't they comparing the GT500. The GT500 is the top option Mustang and still costs less than the M3...It's not even close the GT500 smashes the M3.

Son, I've posted facts (like Nurbrugring lapt times), didn't saw anybody else here posting that sort of infos EXCEPT "shoulda woulda coulda" crap. Am not trying to piss anybody off, but am not gonna watch this obvious USA Motortrend crap with sentences "wooow", "coooolllll", "Ford is so much better in any aspect" "am surprised" - cause it's a pure bullshit and real race data speak a different story.
Everyone looks at the hp figure and forget the torque number. That is where the different displacement shows up. If the cars weighed 2500 lbs, the torque number is not a big factor. When the cars get over 3500 lbs, then it becomes more of a factor and that is why heavier cars, trucks and everything else with weight trying to move uses larger displacement engines or more aggressive gearing for torque multiplication. There is no way around it and you have to pick your poison.
No matter how you slice it, the M3 is almost 30K more and it that is not even in the same price category. For that money, I would spring for the Cadillac CTS V and this is not even a good conversation.
Don't get me wrong, I would drive both of this cars (well maybe Challenger before Ford cause it has killer looks - saw one in Berlin a mongh ago), but you must be fair to say that BMW is a premium producer with superb quality/performance.. I mean check the numbers of N/A engines.. That's some serious HI TECH german engineering there mate.. I know price is a bitch, but if it costed the same as Ford, or slightly over, HONESTLY what would you buy? Ford or BMW?

Iam a former Mercedes Benz Tech so I know alot more about thetechnical aspects of what goes on behind the scenese than most and I can tell you that the cost to own a BMW is ridiculous when things do start to break down. Incredible engineering at an incredible price that doesn't end until you sell it.

As a former Merc tech you should know that 80% of now commonly used technology was 1st introduced by no other then Merc - airbags for e.g. - S class a long time ago and so on.. @HondaMugen81 I'm not going to argue about German engineering because the reason I went to the Mercedes Benz ELITE program was I wanted to work with the latest and greatest technology. The only downside is it takes special tools and training to repair any type of CAN system problem, Gateway problems or SAM(Signals Aquisition Module), otherwise the parts are expensive, but they come apart rather easy. I wouldn't call them junk.

I spend more time talking about Corvettes than Mustangs, but I actually raced and built mustangs for years. I would never say that BMWs are terrible except after the warranty period has ended and you have to start paying for repairs.

The mustang does not have a big block. It has a 32 valve dual overhead cam. It may have 1 more liter but it also produces 100 ft lbs of torque. With a minor tire it will make 30+ more hp.

@1PDee youve never driven a mustang. in stock form most are mild mannered. ford makes the mustang from a standpoint to allow large gains from aftermarket parts. when an intake and tune nets 40hp you know they didnt just happen t build it that way. you can make a mustang handle better than an m3 with a stick axle, its not rocket science its just understanding suspension. when you mod an m3 it costs in upwards of 1300 for a brand name muffler that nets 1-3hp, the reason is that they already maxxed

@Storm7289 and yes the mustang GT vs the M3 stock is comparable i will give you that. but again if you were to introduce modifications into the picture the mustang couldnt even keep up. yea your oberservation of the mustang being cheaper may be true. but keep in mind the mustang again doesnt have nearly as attention to detail and engineering as the BMW. the motor is not made to handle more than 600-700 horsepower without either building it or putting a different motor in. just my opinion

@1PDee yes 10 to 20 grand isnt a reasonable amount. have you heard of the terminator? can handle 800rwhp without opening the motor up. mustangs are built to handle a lot of power you apparently are not very experienced with them. the new gt can put out 700whp on only 9psi on stock internals. the boss was tuned by hennessey to do 890whp on 11psi. the m3 is not the best car to run boost, its a high compression low displacement high revving motor.

@1PDee the mustang has a lot of attention to detail actually if youve ever seen the 2012 boss 302. they took a regular gt and changed over 3000 things, its a superior track car. m3's are maxxed out in bolton terms. doing things like intake tune exhaust doesnt net you very much since the already engineered it to the maximum leaving nothing but pure performance. when you get an american muscle car they give you the car and leave a bunch on the table for the aftermarket.

@1PDee the new 5.0 mustang motor is naturally a more suitable platform for making power, idk why you dont think so, its actually very advanced. its already been put through hell by aftermarket companies making well over 1200hp. it would be the m3 that couldnt keep up because for the muscle cars you can gain 40-50whp from simple exhaust intake and tune, whereas the m3 does not get as much, this is also partly due to the m3 being a much smaller motor

@1PDee btw did you hear they are switching the next m3 to a twin power inline six just like the old days. i liked the 6 cyl m3 better, it was a true testament to performance, in the early 2000's they made a 3.2l 6 cyl that put out 333hp (us).. to this day nothing beats that without being something bigger like a 3.7 and still they can barely do so. im sure the next one will be great too, although id like to see a n/a 6 cyl again im pretty sure it will be turboed :/

Just look up Motor Trend's comparison between the two, in which the GT was .1 seconds behind the M3 at Willow Springs, both being driven by a LeMans-winning racer. And no, the M3 is not 50k. Go look at any dealer inventory. They are ALL 65-70k.

But do research: The new 5.0 is faster in a straight line than the new M3, and only lags behind on Willow Springs (a road course, left AND right turns) by a tenth of a second. Both great cars, sure. @ryanstefanelli not really. from an engineering standpoint, the s54 is one of the most advanced engines today... it makes 104bhp/liter... which is a standard only achieved in the highest echelon of motor design. The m3 unites luxury with performance and that's what it does best. The mustang is just a big block v8... nothing special. It will always be a mustang (though i admit they do look great nowdays)
as a side note.. the new e92 v8 4.0L m3 pushes 103bhp/liter.. the mustang does 85bph/L

@jlcool007 No denying that it's a great engine. The true comparison is at the cost level though, and it's a bit fruitless to compare a $33k car to a $60k car in anything but performance. Though you overstate the luxury of the M3 -- the current generation 3-Series really doesn't have a great interior. The Mustang also has better user technology than the 3. BMW will correct this I'm sure, but the point is that the Mustang is dangerously competitive with the M in almost all categories.

@Marc99GT We could go at this for quite a while, but the the GTR is a awd drive sports car so id say that's a weird comparison. But the M3 GTS would most likely have its way with any mustang ford offers currently on a race track, witch the M3 is made for not a drag strip. We are comparing apples to oranges, i respect your knowledge of vehicles, but im simply implying you get what you pay for and i think the M3 is a lot more car then the mustang.

Stupid kids posting nonsense. Mustangs didn't make much power, but Ford sold more of them each year than BMW sold in all of their models combined. While BMW was making power, Ford was making sales. The 2011 Mustang sold over 11,000 in the first month. Tell me which models combined will hit that number in the first quarter.
The next M3 is rumored to have a Twin Turbo V6 with 440 hp. Barely going to beat a car costing 1/2 as much and get creamed by the Boss 302, GT500, & GT350.

Look at the engines Porsche puts in their cars a 3.8L flat 6 TT, and its kicking all the major car performance manufactures asses. @Oddfull I know more about German engineering than yourself and that TT 3.8L flat 6 is in a car costing over 150K and running quite a bit of psi to make it. Don't forget about the 3.6L TT used in the GT2 RS, but at 23 psi. There is a video of a single turbo 2011 5.0L making approx. 543 rwhp at 6 PSI from a turbo through an AUTOMATIC so what is your point? My comment was accurate whether you like it or not.

@Marc99GT I was regarding your judgment on the rumored next generation M3, I highly doubt that BMW is going to build the next generation M3 to fall short to a mustang. My point is that it just may have a V6TT, but it will be twice the car a mustang will be, justifying its price. And that live rear axle on the mustang is not doing ford any favors by keeping it around, other then driving the cost down. this is obviously by opinion, and i was comparing the Porsche TT to its own competition.

@Oddfull I would hope that BMW would set its sites alot higher than a 35K Mustang since they will probably over 70K for an M3. It is a major accomplishment by Ford that has a 35K Pony car running with an M3 at all performance levels. It hardly looks good for BMW to be going after a Mustang actually. They need to deal with the CTS V Coupe and sedan which are more of its direct competition.

@Marc99GT idk what your trying to say, but strait line power is pretty much useless on a real race track. and sorry to say but a new m3 would spank most mustangs in a strait line anyway. put these two cars on a track and see what happens. not to mention luxury and reliability. i speak from experience ive had a 2002 mustang gt and a 1997 m3 and i would take the m3 ANY day just because it handles like a dream and it pulls better on the top end. its like comparing a cannon with a precision rife.

@floridabowhunter You need to wake up to current events. Motortrend did the test of a 2011 M3 vs a 2011 Mustag GT on a road course and I believe less than tenth was the difference and the Mustang beat the M3 at the drag strip. They have similar power/weight ratios so the M3 is not doing any damage to a new GT. The Boss 302 slaughters anything from BMW on a road course with no problems at all. I drag raced a 99 GT into the 10s so I built them and know them well. Google "The Going Thing MM&FF"

@Marc99GT you still don't understand my point though, a mustang against an m3 on a real race track would be slaughter. that m3 handles a thousand times better than anything american made for that matter. and the bmw's are in the super car class. mustangs are cheaper made and don't have near the closeness to detail. you cant compare the two in terms of real world use. the mustang is for going fast in a strait line. the bmw is for maneuvering at high speed. and ide rather have an m3 any day :)

@floridabowhunter You obviously know nothing about the 2011 Mustang GTs. The BMWs are far from a Super car class so I think that is a stretch. The M3 is also much more expensive to own and maintain. I'm a former Mercedes Benz Tech and own a repair business so I know the costs to maintain just about any car. In all out performance, the New M3 is only slightly better than a new GT at twice the cost. As far as the Boss 302, nothing BMW makes is close and these are the facts.

This very accurate imo. The GT's prior to 2011 were not very fast but with the same mods as the one shown in this video, the race is more than likely what will happen in the real world. The Stang will pull at higher speeds and probably should have from the line but automatics are always better from digs

Lets get this straight....the 3.2 L inline 6 that bmw first released in 1999/2000 was still whipping the Ford Mustang GT 9 years later...it took 11 years for Ford to better that technology. I'm psyched to see BMWs next 6 cylinder. The v8 they put in the current M3 added too much weight, so its not a game breaking as the e46 was.

That mustang V8 did pretty well against the little 6-cylinder German car. Of course the mustang had 1 & 1/2 times the engine displacement, and it was still beaten by a smaller engine German car. American cars are just slow! Very much like their people.

@misfit2910 The 2011 Mustang is 1/100th of a second slower than a M3 on tracks...yeah. And the GT was faster than the M3 in the quarter. Theres a video of a magazine racing them here on youtube, that had to run them about 15 times to get a non tie, and the GT to improve by 1/10th of a second.

@xLuckydemonx Was I talking about the 2011 GT? No... I was talking specifically about this 2005-2009 model. I own a bolt on 2006 GT and a have a very good friend with an e46 M3. In no way will my mustang stand a chance in the bends with an E46 M3, but I will take it all day long on a strait road. The 2011 is a completely different level of mustang than the first model s197's were. Ford specifically built the 2011/2012s to go up against a class of cars such as the E92 and the C63.

No DCT M3 has run low 12s stock because C6 Corvettes beat them all day auto or manual. They are far too heavy with their power to run low 12s bone stock. Show me where it is documented that a DCT M3 has run low 12s bone stock. Motortrend ran 12.6 with the DCT M3. I can only assume you are talking about a C5 ZO6 because you can't get a C6 ZO6 for 35K unless it has a ton of miles on it.

I'm still wondering why people are comparing the GT to the M3 and even thought the M3 just barely, and I mean BARELY beats the GT why aren't they comparing the GT500. The GT500 is the top option Mustang and still costs less than the M3...It's not even close the GT500 smashes the M3.

Everyone looks at the hp figure and forget the torque number. That is where the different displacement shows up. If the cars weighed 2500 lbs, the torque number is not a big factor. When the cars get over 3500 lbs, then it becomes more of a factor and that is why heavier cars, trucks and everything else with weight trying to move uses larger displacement engines or more aggressive gearing for torque multiplication. There is no way around it and you have to pick your poison.

Don't get me wrong, I would drive both of this cars (well maybe Challenger before Ford cause it has killer looks - saw one in Berlin a mongh ago), but you must be fair to say that BMW is a premium producer with superb quality/performance.. I mean check the numbers of N/A engines.. That's some serious HI TECH german engineering there mate.. I know price is a bitch, but if it costed the same as Ford, or slightly over, HONESTLY what would you buy? Ford or BMW?

@HondaMugen81 If they cost the same, I would buy a Ford, but they are far from close to the same and the cost of ownership is significantly more expensive for all of the German cars. Iam a former Mercedes Benz Tech so I know alot more about thetechnical aspects of what goes on behind the scenese than most and I can tell you that the cost to own a BMW is ridiculous when things do start to break down. Incredible engineering at an incredible price that doesn't end until you sell it.

Yes, german cars are bitching expensive to maintain, but nobody can speak shit about their build quality or anything else for that matter.. As a former Merc tech you should know that 80% of now commonly used technology was 1st introduced by no other then Merc - airbags for e.g. - S class a long time ago and so on.. Bmw was allways breathing down on their neck, and if this cars are such a junk, why you ppl from the stater are buying them at the 1st place? Explain that to me please.

@HondaMugen81 I'm not going to argue about German engineering because the reason I went to the Mercedes Benz ELITE program was I wanted to work with the latest and greatest technology. The only downside is it takes special tools and training to repair any type of CAN system problem, Gateway problems or SAM(Signals Aquisition Module), otherwise the parts are expensive, but they come apart rather easy. I wouldn't call them junk.

@myuzz Hardly, I'm the guy that has forgotten more about these cars than most people will ever know. I spend more time talking about Corvettes than Mustangs, but I actually raced and built mustangs for years. I would never say that BMWs are terrible except after the warranty period has ended and you have to start paying for repairs.

I found that comment funny that if you bought a M you have made it. LOL It is a poor mans Mercedes Benz at best. There is no BMW that costs more than the highend Mercedes Benz vehicles by far. I would think if you could afford a Bentley, Ferrari or Highend AMG Mercedes Benz, then you have made it and also have an expensive home to keep them garaged.
