  • I accidentally broke a driver while at the driving range as I hit it too hard on the ground

  • yeah you're right!! thanks :) golf rocks

  • Awesome video; this video has really worked for me; nothing else has!

  • Hey I'm 19 years old and just starting to try golf this year. I can hit with a driver but I usually hit straight up. I have a hard time choosing how to not hit it up as high as I am. Does anyone have any tips for a new golfer such as myself? I've only maxed out hitting 250 and I know thats not much but I started 2 months ago and try the range once a week usually. Thank you for any advice :)

  • @TheCanadianKid92 tee is too high up. i really dont have a clue either

  • do not use effort with your arms, just relax and swing , keep the eyes on the ball, and u solve the problems. I working on that...

    andfollow through..

  • useful from 8:50 and out

  • Rubbish

  • long day if you played a round with this bloke!!

  • Thanks, I picked some stuff up.

  • 5:05 the ball dissapers

  • I naturally swing up on the ball how do i stop this habit... should i stand further back or what should i do?

  • as a golf coach on the other side of the world. i do agree. Most amateurs have these same ideas. Very interesting.

  • Whenever i hit my driver, it gets no lift. i dont know if its the tee height or my swing. plz help.

  • hey mister redbull try a stiffer shafted driver -i did exactly the same when i bought a club with too whippy a shaft- the club head cant catch up with your swing and you are lifting before the club hits the ball -worked for me -good luck

  • Hey, I'm a scratch golfer, a senior in high school and lately I've notice my ball start slicing. I was told to stand closer but this doesn't help. My driver hasn't ever been fit, no place for miles and its too long, about 48.5". My arms hanging to floor is 37". Should I either stick with my swing but grip down lower on the grip, stand back further, or something else. Please, i need help. I have a huge tournament soon!!!

  • @imwrittingmyname Standing further away is better than closer. Standing closer will tend to put your weight on your heels which will set you up for a cut/slice.

  • @RingerDaMan : OMG thank you! I fixed my swing. :) I'm hitting it 290yrds dead straight. I shot a 69 at Woodside Meadows Golf Course in Michigan. First time ever 3 under par for 18 thx times a million

  • @imwrittingmyname Is it a slice or an undesirable fade? I have a natural fade in my swing. If your shooting a scratch score it's most likely an open club face issue with an undesirable fade. This fades the ball not so much SLICE. A slice will move right almost immediately after Impact. I would not recommend standing closer to the ball. Try working on the range. If the tournament comes before you can work things out then avoid hitting the driver instead and go with the 3 wood.

  • @niksinthe916 Thanks for the advice! All i needed was a little practicing and taking the club back better and tempo. I'm so happy because I made the 2010 U.S. World Amateur Team. Peter Langley!!! One of the 3 chosen, how prestigous. :)

  • @imwrittingmyname Congratulations man! Please let me know how it goes. When do you leave?

  • @imwrittingmyname October 28-31 at Olivos Golf Club and Buenos Aires Golf Club in Argentina. sry for posting late, busy... leaving tonight wish me well, got new driver, taylormade supertri, new irons, callaway 09 forged (Highly recommend for low handicaps), and new wedges-- taylormade rac good for price and playability. Last, cannot do anything without the scotty cameron!! Need them birds and eagles

  • Hi I'm 15 and working on golf because i would like to try out for golf my junior year. I go to the driving range as often as I can but I can't to seem hit driver. I hit a 3 wood 200-250 yards, but when I hit the driver i always top it and hit a low grounder. I use the same method for ball height on the tee. Any tips?

  • @redbull23952395 Just remember that the clubface makes the ball go up in the air. Even with the driver you do NOT need to hit up on the ball. Just brush the tee out of the ground, forget the ball.

  • @redbull23952395 May need to have a higher tee position? Its a SWING not a HIT. Like Ringer said, forget the ball.

  • @tomsmith100 thats precisely the problem i have. with practice swings, i brush the ground everytime, but as soon as i put a ball down i immediately hit DOWN on the ball gauging canyons in the dirt.

  • @remmy100 I'm a self taught golfer who had a couple lessons when I was 17. Played for about 1 year very rarely, perhaps once a month. Didn't play for 5 years and have only in the past 3 months started again. I am 22 and at the moment can hit my driver staight 280 yards. Never hit a driver or owned a driver before. My love is the short game though through my sw, lob and putter. Trying to get better at hitting 7, 6 5 from the fairway or rough and also woods from there. I now have a handicap of 18.

  • puzzler, first i would say to get a lesson with someone so that they can see and fix ur swing. my advice about your drive is to make sure your club face isnt open and that feet knees hips and shoulders are aligned parallel to where you are aiming the club face so that u are swinging throught the ball and not across it; therefore putting spin on the ball and slicing it left

  • that ball position tip really helps, i am right handed and slice right, because I impact too early in the swing.

  • Is the driver swing any more flat than an iron swing.I hit my irons really well.My driver is another story ,I'm either bombing it 280 or I could top the ball or drop kick it.

    thanks

  • @secretogolf when you top it that means you are picking your head up, which results in lifting your entire body up and topping it!

  • i had the tendency to hit my driver all over the map. I actually came up with a way to stop both from occuring by doing a few simple things. I would first take swings with my driver where i would bring the club barely past my waist and only try to hit the ball maybe 60-80 yards. Once i started hitting those straight i would bring it back to my shoulders and so on until i created consistency. When i got to my full swing, I made sure my entire swing was very slow. This gave me that consistency

  • Great video. Thanks.

I have also just recently started hovering the driver, not so much to avoid pebbles or tees, though that is very true - I feel that it it lends itself to a better setup and take-away position, and also to a better tempo to the swing.

  • For me, probably the best explanation of how to approach driving the ball I have seen on Utube. Follow this and you can't go far wrong.

  • I'm left handed and every time I drive, my ball curves way to the left. I've been following all the instructions right but I still cant get a straight shot. Anyone have any Idea whats wrong?

  • @ThePuzzler96 Yes, your path is going way out to the right. The ball will always curve away from your path during impact.

  • I know how to hit a driver. How do I go from hitting it 275 to 300 yards?

  • @jdheelfan

Either more swing speed or heavier clubs.

  • I am 6'4",longer clubs would definitly feel more comfortable. But I didnt think custom clubs varied in length that much. Are you saying my irons may need to be 3 inches longer than a shorter mans irons. If you could clear this up for me I would be grateful,Thanks

  • @ward185 3 inches may be a bit too much, but yes you should get longer clubs if you are a taller person. You should not have to bend at the waist or knees excessively just to get the sole of the club flat on the ground.

  • @RingerDaMan Thanks,I am going to purchase new clubs soon, any recomendations?

  • @ward185 GET FIT BY A PRO! I don't care what manufacturer you go do, just make sure they fit you well.

  • my driving is so mutch better thnx !

  • excellent lesson , i was ready to quit golf i shot a 69 last year now its tough breaking 80 , this helped me alot , thanks !!!!!!

  • Remember, golf is a game of preference and consistency, he prefers hovering the driver because it works and shows consistency for him, and i prefer grounding the driver because it has done the same, Make small changes in the swing, not big ones :)

  • I just started playing and the clubs i have are the 2,3,4,5,7,9 irons. theyre used and im a tall guy, 6' 1". i top the ball alot, ive been bending my knees and it helps, but my knees and legs are damaged. Would longer clubs work better? any tips for a beginner? thank you

  • @zecks08 YES! Get longer clubs. They will change everything for you.

  • fantastic lesson, tryed it yesterday and i was awsome ,thnx !jason

  • all makes sense to me !will try it out in comp tomorrow ,thnx !

  • Great tips and instructor.

  • good vid thanks man

  • cant wait to take these tips out on the range, thanks.

  • Thanks for this video. It has helped me plenty. Another thing about the hover - it makes sense considering the driver should bottom out a little before striking the ball and therefore hit the ball on the beginning of the up swing.

    Thanks again.

  • hit the f ii n ball.

  • Great Video...I am hitting two yards behind the ball...I do not even notice I do it do you have any videos to help correct that..I mean my club hits the ground..I kill my three iron even doing so but my driver has gone to heek since I have been doing it..

  • douche

  • damn nice swing haha

  • Glad your videos are out here! This is sure to help me out.Just wish the weather was cooperating right now to get out and and practice my drives.

  • 10 bucks says he sliced it

  • Why do you think I sliced it?

  • cause thad be funny as shit

  • Hitting up on the ball is what produced LOWER backspin which results in more distance.

  • There are more ways to reduce backspin than hitting up on the ball.

  • What are the other ways?

  • Higher kick point in the shaft, less loft on the clubface, low spin golf ball, and a higher CG on the clubface.

If you are having to hit UP on the ball to reduce spin then I would say your equipment is not properly fit. If you are trying to be a long drive champion who tee's it up 5 inches off the ground, then sure hitting up with a 6 degree lofted driver makes sense. Hitting up with a 12-10 degree lofted driver is just destructive to a good swing.

  • @RingerDaMan

It's a rare result, but you seem to speak of something logically - nice achievement. Seriously, I often saw stupid tips on youtube, but not only do you explain the idea; you also take the time to show the results of the alternatives.

Nice video. There's something interesting I came across and must conclude about each sport: a good action lies in the key elements, in the obvious things. Pros are better firstly and mostly because they accomplish those simple things properly.

  • good job.... trying it today....

  • steve, your clearly the man.

  • thanks dude!! helped out a lot!

  • HOVER! I will try that now. Sometimes when I hit something at the beginning of my backswing it throws off my rhythm. Thanks

  • check out my swing

    n suggestions plz

  • i really liked the weight system. I always get confused about the shoulder width idea.

  • Great tips, Steve. Thanks!

  • can someone give me tips? Whenever I hit with the driver, my ball flies off to the right? (I'm right handed FYI). What am I doing wrong in my swing and how can I correct it?

  • try addressing the ball, with the ball a little closer to the front foot .

  • seems like you're swinging across the ball, rather than hitting it square.

  • thanx for the tips

  • thank you for the tips. the hand positioning being constant is of great help. I was actually able to use my 3 hybrid and drive it 220 yds! thanks!

  • i never knew the driver swing was different from the iron swing before viewing this video 9 months ago.

i used to hit down on the ball and my ball flight was a very low hook.

after using these tips, my ballflight is ideal and i can now hit my driver 280-305.

thanks Steve for the great video!

  • great advise cant wait till the weekend so i can go and try it

  • tempe is beautiful, thanks for the lesson

  • good one....pretty much covered everything

  • hi could you have a look at m golf swing im 14 years old

  • good one

  • my gosh...this guy talks a lot

  • Thanks a bunch! Needed some tips on my driving and they worked.

  • good tips

  • thats a damn heavy couch

  • These are really great and practical tips. Some simple things to remember: feet about shoulder with apart, athletic stance, club head lined up with your inside front foot and getting the club head back on plane before impact.

    golfinstructionsonline . blogspot. com

  • this is very very helpful ang wonderful tips too!

  • Thanks for the tips , I will keep this in my mind and be part of my routine ,

  • nice tip really helped

  • i thought u hit the ball not the DRIVER???

  • U don't hit the ball; the driver hits the ball.

  • i got told, good point

  • swing more inside... and make sure your club head is sitting on the ground like its supposed to

  • i have a problem with my swing:

40% of the time ill hit the ball and it will go far (225 yd. approx) and and straight as a line and 60% of the time ill either slice the ball or it will just skid the ground and barely go anywhere

    suggestions please!

  • Spend A Hour At The Driving Range With Just Your Drivers Or Hybrids (3-4) Or Your Woods That Are Really Aluminum Now Days And Line It Up As Normal Dont Grip It Too Tightly Let The Club Do The Work.Take Aim At The F-Way And Go Easy And Slow On The Back-Swing And Then Let It Explode But Follow Thru Like Its Nothing And Turn Your Body Toward The Swing Only After You Have Hit The Ball. It Does Not Matter How Hard You Swing That Driver,The Drive Will Only Go As Far As Final Club Head Speed At Impact.

  • Hey it would be awesome if you would check out my new swing videos and maybe offer some advice. Thanks a bunch.

  • very informative thank you!

  • very good..love the "like i'm about to pick up a couch method" LOL

  • thank you!

  • Good stuff! Thanks Steve!

  • Great tip about hand position at address/impact...helped me a great deal. Thx.

  • The tip about checking the correct spine angle at address by holding the shaft from the chin is an absolute pearl. Thanks Steve you're a clas act man!

  • nice tips Steve. Thank you for taking the time to produce this video

  • Added a nice extra couple opf yards onto my swing.

    Thanks alot great advice!!!

  • well thought out Steve. this particular video answers a lot of question all the way from ball position to hand position to axis tilt and how one should arrive at each.

  • you forgot to mention something very important about set up for a driver. if you hover the club with the ball in the middle of the face, and let it drop, the ball will always fall towards the toe end. many good drivers tee the driver off the toe. this is only if you dont wish to hold the club up for very long

  • Steve,

Nice instructions as always, very basic, easy to understand. Do you advocate hovering the clubhead on all the clubs in the bag or just the driver?

  • You know, I have never really given that any thought. I have always grounded with the irons and hovered for the driver (although sometimes I forget). I will have to experiment with this a bit. GREAT question!

  • As for technique, do you first set the club behind the ball, then your first move is to hover the head or start out with the club above the ground. Seems like I remember Nicklaus never grounded his irons or woods. Thanks for the info.

  • I let it ground during the setup. Check out my pre-shot routine video to see why.

  • Big swing for a 7 iron.

  • I don't understand why you advocate the hands in front of the left thigh?

Why not a neutral position naturally clasped in front of the body. Wouldn't any deviation from that open/close the shoulder line?

  • If it is opening your shoulders to the target that means you aren't properly performing the axis tilt.

We want as direct a line from your left shoulder to the ball as we can get. If your left hand is bent with mid-body hands that will promote flipping.

  • Ringer,

Good stuff as always. Always good to see some of the things you tend to forget when hitting the big stick.
