They didn't change what made Gold/Silver a great game and what they added new into the game were pretty nice additions for the most part, such as the pokeathlon (that one was pretty fun), the Safari-Zone (everyone missed it in Silver/Gold) or the feature that your first pokemon was walking behind you (and everyone was disappointed this feature didn't make it into Black/White). In my opinion HG/SS are probably the best games of the series.

Pretty legit team i've used (in the original silver) is 1.Pidgeot 2.Raichu 3.Haunter 4.Ninetales(if you cant get Growlithe) 5.Lapras 6.Kadabra. Work pretty well together. Haunter becomes the main strength of the team though and is quite helpful for catching pokemon. haunters moves - Destiny bond(for last chance kill) Hypnosis shadow ball Dream eater
