  • the begining sounded like "if you have to ask"

  • that hat is pimp!

  • Marty pls, pls, loose that hat...

  • Great, now I have to find the comment of ranmore30

  • That was a great lesson - thank you so much for sharing! Enough of this computer... where's my guitar?!

  • funk the world

  • what kind of guitar is it

  • @airsoftunboxer100

    Fender Stratocaster?

  • Haha I zoned out to talk on my cell, then came back and totally misheard "funk in b minor". XD

  • why is the am behind him not plugged in?

  • @MyWilldo

It doesn't need to be... Just look at it. Isn't it sexy? Just having a Fender amp behind you says "I have taste" as much as having a wall of Marshalls behind you says "I have a small penis"

  • @rchave I suppose, but I already knew he was wasn't lacking in the briefs because he's playing a Srat :P

  • @MyWilldo

I think any guitar that isn't spiky with skulls or flame designs says that. This is a tasteful setup even if the deluxe reverb isn't plugged in.

  • who care if its jon´s or RHCP riff or ,,just´´ funky. Have you guys learned this? Marty´s trying to help us and thats the point

  • i think the last chord is a mayor 2nd not a minor 2nd

  • @alexdemonterrey

I don't think so, I'm maybe wrong but on the G string you've got the minor 3rd, so it should be minor. I'm not sure.

  • muchas gracias...thanks a lot.

  • HEY! Show some respect here folks! Marty is tryin' to teach us some guitar playing and he is cool enought!

  • that Bmin9 is orgasmic

  • wow your a gr8 player, u shud be proud

  • a year ago, this video was introducing me the "know how" of play funk in frusciante style. Today i can play and jam in this rythm easily. thank you! i think that in this rythm if you dont have a good right hand, theres no way to play. nobody can teach that.. (sorry about bad english).

  • just play guitar and speak less

  • @zgr5000 if he didn't tell us what he was doing then the lesson would be pointless

  • @DCooper720 hater

  • marty squirt hahahahahah

    Atention,, we have a squirter

  • i guarantee you you can do any funk riffs by keeping your index finger in that bar position and playing around with your last three fingers. btw... Bad mamma jamma by carl carlton is a great/simple example of the first riff he showed

  • Nice strat!

  • Thanks sir..awesome lesson --Big sarge, iraq

  • you talk a lot man!?

*go straight to the good stuff

  • simple!!

  • i dont like it -.- BAD sorry but its true -.-

  • @Techno867 u didn't watch the full video did you .. theres some useful information.. i've been playing for 9 years and i got some good info outta this

  • @Techno867 What the hell were you expecting? A large prize at the end for watching it?? A lesson about how to feel your music? Find that out yourself!

  • just awesome ! thx for the lesson :D

  • omg it's MARTYYYY!

  • awesome

  • funkin B minor lol

  • what chord was he playing in the begining?

  • i swear your a jew..are you a jew? you have to be a jew man..not cool mister schwartz

  • yeah

  • yeah

  • I learned how to play this same stuff by ear, but I gotta say, you are a great teacher and you are a great player with feel. Very impressed! I'm going to subscribe

  • okey....its time for me to try... :)

  • 6:35 that might sound kind of cool on an acoustic, but i'll have to try it out... great lesson also, as always :D

  • DUDE I HAVE THAT AMP!! NO WAY!!

  • soooow guuud!!thanks

  • thank very much

  • YOU HAVE GOT ME HOOKED TO FUNK

    You rock dude

  • happy holidays ...

thanks for another great lesson, sorry I didn't get you anything

  • thanks marty good stuff ,merry christmass to u and your family

  • lol nice one troll

  • Love your lessons Marty. Keep em coming. Thanks a ton!

  • He looks like La Bamba from late night with Conan O'Brien.

  • He totally looks like LaBamba - no offense - it's true, don't thumbs down him!

  • Haha he does, doesn't he! :D

Too bad Conan was fired :(

  • it says red hot chili peppers NOt john frusciante was john the only guitarist in the chilis?>i dont think so

  • preciate it. helped out a good bit.

  • The only thing that can teach you to mute while playing single-note lines and stuff is pratice. Now stop being lazy and go pratice more.

  • this is funk but frusciante barely uses this. he uses this in like 2 songs. from waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before. if you wanted to call it a frusciante lesson show a video of how to mute strings while playing individual notes or a pentatonic scale lesson. thats where most of his technique comes from

  • My point exactly. I guess i was just in a piss of a mood when i watched this. Video has nothing to do with how Frusciante plays. It's a straight forward Funk technique.

  • indeed, the muted strings is really special in frusciante playing

  • You're totally right, John hasn't been doin' much funky stuff since BSSM, but "Storm in a Teacup" is a little funky off of Stadium Arcadium

  • AND YES I FUNK IT OH FUNK IT UPA

  • Your hat is win. =D

    Also, great lesson ^_^

  • Good thing you were here to point that out, otherwise I would have thought he was John's twin brother who still has his teeth.

  • this is one of the most used technique in funky ... and red hot are not "real" funky ...

  • this really is a usefull lesson. funking awesome indeed.

  • excellent lesson!

  • "errrrrr get a funk face going"

    made me smile :D

  • The fuNking B minor =D !!!

  • wo wo wo RHCP is tied with Stone Temple Pilots with best american band. but let's not forget Jimi Hendrix Exp and Led Zeppelin. and uh Incubus are good but i need to hear more i bet they are kickass.

  • Led Zeppelin is not american, their english, by the way. Do inform me if i got the wrong end of the stick of what you were saying

  • the beginning sounds like "If You Have To Ask" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers

  • thanks mate good one.

  • cool hat

  • Yayayayaya!!!!! That was amazing!!!!

  • funck you

    you are awesome

  • I was thinking to talk about some funk that's minor. And I'm gonna be in b minor.

So basicly we're just gonna call this funkin b minor.

    Most beautiful lesson, sir!

  • Marty you are the man. After 7 vids you are officially my guitar teacher.

  • go hillel.

  • "Funck" good lesson, man!

  • that was great man, rhcp is one of the best bands to me.

btw that guy looks kinda like roman of GTA IV

  • Well done! Very clear explanations and great video / sound quality. Worth the time! Thanks!! BTW - your site is good too.

  • dude u got it! i love your lessons! thinkin bout subdiscribing :D

  • uhm. why would you even think bout it? just do it....

  • dude its Seth from Superbad

  • Bwahahaha.

  • great stuff...thanks!!!

  • This one is a fun one to play, thanks!!!

  • Nicely done

gonna go get mah Funk on!

  • You sir, rock. Thanks again for the lesson man, love it!

  • Thank you for you teaching! You don't simply show how to repeat some stuff, you teach us how to improvise amd discover for ourselves :))

    Very useful thanks again!

  • great lesson im guessing this style of music is kool

  • Tnx alot for the vid, like the rest here, Im sure I'm gonna be jammin all night :)

  • marty . i love the funk .

i think were all ready to see a jam session with everyone from NLG included. that would be sweet

  • thanks marty, nice lesson.

  • wow, i had never tought of spicing up ma chords with the pentatonic scales...

  • so much better than that expert village crap

  • @scavage19 thats "expert village" :D

  • Funk has really grown on my lately. It's just so fun to listen to and play. Get some Red Hot Chili Peppers and some Incubus in there man. This video reminds me so much of You Will Be A Hot Dancer by Incubus. Rock On.

  • Man you have no idea how great Incubus is, try taking a listen. Seeing that you like RHCP you might try listening to some older Incubus like Fungus Amongus or S.C.I.E.N.C.E.. I do agree that the Chili Peppers are great. But whatever floats your boat, seeing as that comment was probably posted by a naïve person who only posted to provoke me into a childlike online argument that i have no interest in.

  • Yeah seriously, I don't understand how someone could like RHCP and not appreciate some Incubus, they have some great songs that aren't bullshit.

Even "Drive" is pretty smart stuff. I love the lyrics as well which is not common for me in today's music.

ddftw90 unfortunately comes across as a typical "fanboi" who thinks that music is some kind of competition - instead of actually listening to it. :(

  • Atleast in my area.. the majority of individuals that jam RHCP, also jam Incubus just as much, its cool :D

  • I don't know a single person who likes the chili peppers, but doesn't like Incubus. The Chili Peppers have two amazing singers, an amazing guitar and bass player, and an insane drummer. Incubus is always changing the style of their music, so there's no way you can't like at least one of their songs. And Brandon Boyd and Mike have great control over their voice. They have an awesome DJ, drummer, bass, and guitar player.

  • Anthony kedis isnt amazing.

  • Are you kidding? I hope that you mean that amazing isn't good enough to describe his awesome talent. He's one of the best singers ever.

  • incubus lol suckfest/. andrew byrd

  • Incubus is the second best band in the world. RHCP is the best because they are a 3 piece band, and they keep a great sound going in all of their songs. Your music is awful because you have to do an orchestra to keep a sound (your sound sucks anyways) and you do guitar hero instead of the actual stuff.

  • first of all RHCP is not a trio.... 'your music is awful b/c ypi jYour music is awful because you have to do an orchestra to keep a sound '. are you serious thats retarded, thats like saying beethoven is bad b/c he wrote symphonies, just illogical. a band isnt amazing because of the amount of musicians they have. they should be judged on their music, the sound, the groove, the proficiency of the artists.

  • RHCP is a three piece band. Guitar, Bass, and Drums. I never said they were a trio. I also don't judge a band by how many instruments they have. I judge by sound. I could sit all day and listen to RHCP (my favorite band). Incubus is my second favorite band and they use lots of different instruments.

  • i'm really surprised how easy it is to sound funky, just with a few basic chords and a bit of rhythm

    thanks for the vid

  • gonna be jammin off that all night...thanks man

  • LOL i was playing along wit my bass but he keeps on pausing haha

  • would say believing to have contracted terminal eye cancer, and therefore actually having to change one of the lines in Paper towns.

  • Hey Marty (or anyone),

When I try to do this stuff, I have a hard time cause I hit the 'low' e string and a string which aren't muted. Are you just keeping your right hand strumming really small and tight or what?

  • I love funk music. Great lesson !

  • Great Lesson! Works really well with the minor pentatonic scale.

  • this is the kind of lessons I like to find on the web, insightful and with huge load of feeling !, the things you poll out and things gets interesting !

  • Really cool and useful lesson

  • i want to funk your guitar

  • Funky

  • this is a good lesson. Your funk playing is almost the exact same style I play in when playing funk, but I still learned a couple things and small differences that I'm going to try out.. favourite genre for sure.

  • thanks you just made me want to go practice some funk

  • marty is god.

  • good grief !

  • I fucking LOVE playing guitar.

  • me too !

  • I really enjoy your lessons Marty. Keep 'em coming

    Brad.

  • Great creative music lessons!

  • sweet.

  • Awesome!!

  • Marty is the fucking man.

  • Another rockin video to add to my favorites list.

One thing I noticed Marty, is that when you're playing a lot of funk riffs, you hold your pick in what seems to be a very unnatural way. It's almost as if you are putting your index finger on the front edge of the pick for "evenness" of the stroke.

Or ... it's just me. Any cool tips there we should know about? I often get hung up in the strings trying these kinds of riffs.

    Thanks man .. you rock.

    -Cheers

  • first I hate chewing tobacco or "dip" but have you ever seen someone flick it with their wrist and the index finger to pack it down. It's like that. when I single note, I'm more conventional. don't pay to much attention to it. I think we should all do what feels normal (whithin reason)

    thanks,

    marty

  • is that a mexican fender?? i have the same one :p

  • nice, again

  • Marty,

thanks for the lesson. Really good stuff.

  • Is Bm9 the right name for that chord?

I should probably have researched a little before posting this comment, but im not sure if that's the right name.. can someone confirm this either way?

    Very nice lesson anyway :)

  • if B is the root it is a Bmin9

if D is in the root than it is a Dmaj7

very cool indeed to know that.

  • It looks like you hold your pick pointed up? ...not perpendicular?

    It's working for you.

Thats one of the hardest things for me is getting a consistent grip that works.

  • i love this guy! he is the best teacher! yeah!

  • marty has a spastic leg

  • wats that??

  • coffee

  • Marty...you totally kick azz, bro!

  • I love marty's lessons, they're so easy to follow, and hes so clear and easy to understand.

  • cool lesson, im lovin those Bm9 slide

  • Nice stuff. If you have a looper record the little riff that marty shows you and practice soloing over it with a minor penta scale. If you've got the funk chops down it sounds awesome and you can jam endlessly over what marty just showed you.

  • Great stuff Marty your the best

  • marty is teh best

the riff that he plays around 8:55 reminds me of Stop by Janes Addiction

  • make my funk the "P" funk, I wants to get funked up

  • old chili peppers resurrected xD

  • "Old Chili Peppers" Heh, I still think of Dire Straits as a new band. You Kids Get Off My Lawn. Sheesh, my joints hurt.

  • great video guys it helped alot

  • great lesson I had figured out the half steep up but the chord shape and other such was cool thanks

  • Very nice! I loved this one. I'm a huge fan of the chili peppers, and love their style. I love funk in general! Rock on man! 5/5

  • GO MARTY!

  • David is a great guy, I like that we are different enough to compliment each other!

    Thanks y'all!!1

  • Marty is so great, I dont know what it is, maybe the way he explains things in details, its easy to follow and listen to him. Great lesson!

  • Marty and David are the best in my opinion lol

  • Agreed

  • i love the red hot chili peppers

the old school peppers is why i play funk

  • same, that's why I started playing, but by now I also got into some main funk groups like funkadelic, parliment, bootsy collins, earth wind & fire, ohio players, george clinton, etc, just to name a few

  • "mmmkay?" XD Mr. Mackie from South Park!

  • Can we have more lessons with David, hes a legend

  • If people who aren't familiar with the Chili Peppers, they need to listen to Blood Sugar Sex Magik album as well as Freaky Styley, and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan!

  • oh, I'm gonna learn some next level guitar ^^)

  • 0th o.O normally im not this dumb but it acually says Views: 0 :P

john F really does have cool funky playing, one of their key factors of being unique and different
