@TiptheJester I am a doctor and labor does take a long time. It is normal and expected that labor for a first time mom will take up to and exceeding 30 hrs. The water normally breaks right before the woman is fully dilated although it can break earlier but labor progresses just as slowly afterwards. Even if she had had over 5 kids, labor would most likely take over 2 hours (very rare to take less). So, no, driving 102 is panicing and not at all warrented.

Labor with first children is typically the longest. Further children usually go much quicker. I have heard many stories of people barely making it to the hospital when having a baby. It was kinda $hitty to get the ticket, but at least everything ended up OK and everyone was alright.

Cenk, labor takes a very long time the first time (the only kind you've had any experience with probably as you only have one child) but subsequent children often come very quickly. I don't know whether the guy racing to the hospital was a first time father or not, but if it was a second or third child and the wife's water had already broken, the baby could potentially come VERY quickly, and there are greater risks of infection if you deliver in an unsterilized environment.
