No one has mentioned it but: Carmen took the title of this song from the end of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." It's a beautiful image--and a beautiful ballad.
And how beautiful were Nathalie Wood and Robert Wagner.
In the early 80s there was a venezuelan pop singer, Victor Gimenez, who made a spanish version of this song (actually a very good cover). It was called "Mañana" (Tomorrow). I've been trying to find an mp3 of that version for some years, but never succeded. I heard it once on the radio many years ago, and I was blown away by it. Now I just found out that the original version is by Eric Carmen. This is the first time I hear it and I love it. However I'm still looking for the spanish version :(
This song was written and performed by Eric Carmen, it's his song not Olivia-Newton John. It was on Eric's masterpiece album "Boats Against the Current"..........Olivia recorded it as an after thought for filler on one of her hit albums.
This is one of the most beautiful ballads ever written. This is the first time I've heard Eric's version and it's still beautiful although, Olivia's version is still my favorite.
Estupenda combinación de música e imágenes, es como exponer el alma desnuda, como un himno a dos amantes...invita a hacer poesía en una hoja en blanco o en tu vida...Fili.
The first time I heard this song I was blown away and couldn't figure out why it wasn't a top 10 hit. His record company screwed up and didn't promote this song.
I like his version... I'm actually more used to Olivia's version and had no idea Eric sang this song. He's an amazing singer tho but I like Olivia's version better...
This is a really great collage, and I'm starting to think this is Eric Carmen's best song, period. This one he did 'all by himself' - no borrowing from Russian Romantic composers....
This is the title track of Eric Carmen's second solo LP. It reached #88 in 1978. The greatest hit from this album, however, was "She Did It," which reached #23 in 1977.
how lucky to see him at disneylad i die to have gone back and seen them that would have been the ride to top all rides.

Totally underrated singer/songwriter.
All By Myself, She Did It, Never Gonna Fall In Love Again, Change Of Heart, I'm Through With Love..... all great songs too!
As far as male vocalists go, I've always connected with singers Eric Carmen, Boz Scaggs and Chris Rea.

1. One of the best versions of Row, row, row your boat ever recorded
2. Always thought it would be a great duet.

It would be cool to hear Eric Carmen and Olivia Newton-John sing this together (she recorded it for her Totally Hot album in 1978)

Everything Eric Carmen touched is magical -- whether he rocked or sang his heart out in a soulful ballad.

I forgot how beautiful this song is. I always liked him growing up. All by Myself is still as a classic cd, but this should have been a huge hit

A masterpiece of music by Eric Carmen. It's a shame more people aren't familiar with it.
Thanks for mentioning me on the credits, but without you this amazingly beautiful video wouldn't have been possible.
