I've never understood why people like these characters. Cathy is a spoiled brat who choosed money over love. But he- if you really loved someone you would let them rest in peace, not wish that they would be stuck to one place as ghosts.
I haven't read the book, though I plan to as soon as I can get my hands on a copy, but I've seen the 2009 Masterpieces version. And I really feel like I could believe that Cathy loved Heathcliff in that one, but in this, at least so far, it doesn't seem like she cares about him. I don't know, I don't really like these actors for these roles. And that's saying a lot because I loveeee Fiennes.
i think Juliette Binoche delivered a really poor performance for the role of cathy, as usual Raph fiennes is absolutely great performing as heathcliff
@bellenyc76 I don't like her as Catherine Earnshaw either ! Although she has the looks, her presence is too passive, soft and delicate. Catherine is feisty, fiery, impulsive and passionate. None of these traits come through in Binoche's performance.
I think Julliette Binoche delivers in this film like no other actress. When she's confessing her love for Heathcliff it's just amazing, I cry everytime, and Ralph Fiennes is amazing as Heathcliff. I like how she captures Cathy's wildness, it's just great! Best version!! xx
this cathy seriously annoys me so much. i did not picture her this way at all when i read the book. she was much more passionate and fierce with emotion and fire, not ditzy and constantly laughing and humming. the actor portraying heathcliff does a much better job.
What I like about Cathy and heathcliff's love is that its not romantic, soft and kind (the way I initially envision love); but its passionate, consuming and painful. I never thought love could be like that until I read the book. I love the part when she said "I am heathcliff....." that was deep.....
@njova25 Yes, or the other way around. Depends on how you look on it. They didn't really suite each other, but they were too much in love to see that.
few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand
Is him making a calendar marking the days with who Cathy spends time with, supposed to be Heathcliff's idea of being romantic? Because it's just creepy--thats not love that's unhealthy obsession.
@kar22lita because I thought it was gonna be worth it but it wasnt that why I stopped at part 4 I think that if they werent going to stay true to the book than they shouldnt have made the movie
i own the book but haven't got round to reading it yet so i'm not really qualified to judge, but in adaptations cathy always comes across as a right cow!

I've read the book so many times and seen so many versions of this movie, this is my favourite. It remains, and will always remain an amazing classic and no doubt we will see many more in the future. I love the story.
@AucklandNZ1 I agree with you. Even if they were thougth as teenagers, we shouldn't forget that in that specific time, people grow upfaster...they used to marry at the age of 15 or 16, so they needed to be mature. I think Fiennes and Binoche are perfect for this movie...=)
still difficult to believe that he could love catherine that much and say that they are made of the same material(or is it cathy herself that says this?) when they are evidently so different. hmmm.. ... yet, they could be very similar in some way...
@BreakTheSkyMyseIf lol... absolutely not!XD it wasn't a sarcasm, sorry if it seemed so...lool i really didn't think of it this way! i just found out that Hareton - Cathy is a foil to Heathcliff - Catherine. It's incredible!!!!I love Bronte!!!I still have to read the tenant of wildfell hall to know what makes the bronte sisters so great;)
@Rosamorrable Oh, ok. But yeah, I think the story is incredibly poetic. Its beautiful how the lovers reflect the fire within eachother, and in the end that fire that draws them together ends up destroying them both. I love it. =]
juliet binoche is such an incredible actress... ive been watchin this part again n again... i llove the way she talks here... how d mischief suddenly turns into unbearable grief... esp that part "my love for heathcliff" thtz amazing
@ILikeABandCalldOasis I always found him childish and high maintenance. Though I love the character of Heathcliff, I've always found him as petty. Not only does he make those who "wronged" him suffer( and rightly so in the case of HIndley), but he does so through the use and manipulation of innocents (Isabella Linton), and continues on his crusade of cruelty long after those he originally set out to punish have perished.
I still give Ralph Fiennes' portrayal 5 fan-girl "squees" out of 5.
@ninafrop It must just be the way that we read it in my class, or the way that he was contrasted next to weedy Edgar Linton all the time. But you can get mature 16 year olds.
Cathy's hair bothers me... actually, in general, Cathy just bothers me, int he book she annoyed me because she was kind of an idiot and wouldn't marry Heathcliff because it would "disgrace" her and she was mean to poor Nelly... in the movie, she's even worse because, i think, they picked the wrong person to play her
Wtf. This is ridiculous. Nelly hates Cathy in the book because the latter is such an egotistical, attention seeking cow. In this version they've made them lovers in their 20s when they were young children, and there's no knowledge of Heathcliff's evil personality yet which by this stage is really quite obvious in the book. Awful.
oh no! but i don't know who's to hate among them.. i hate heathcliff at the middle of the story.. i i hate cathy at this one. but the story is indeed great! no words could explain emily bronte's only book!
When she first talks to Nelly Cathy is naive enough to think her marrying Linton will not change anything between her and Heathcliff. If only she had listened to what Nelly was trying to tell her. That's the tragedy.
The book isn't suppose to make you love Cathy or Heathcliff, it is supposed ot make you show how obsession and jealousy and social status can ruin a relationship.
i kinda expected a bit more ethinicity in heathcliff. i mean the book did say he was darker than what the english back then were used to. if someone with an irish/scottish accent constitutes a "dark gypsy" then oops i imagined him all wrong lol XD. ...i hope conitnuing to watch this movie doesnt ruin the book for me
word for word from the book, which is nice and really appreciate it, however, Binoche and Fiennes are far TOO OLD for this role...we oughtn't forget that we are talking about a First Big Love between 2 hot spirited and sexually awakened Teenagers here.....
god it doesn't get better than this. This is classic lover's lament and angst. To forget your heart and soul to marry a man who is so different from you and is rich and wealthy? Sounds criminal doesn't it?
It has always annoyed me that they don't have Yorkshire accents. Cathy especially. That's why the 2009 version just on ITV was good because they actually had Yorkshire accents! Fancy that.
Agreed. The 2009 version was the best adaption in both characterization and story development on screen. This is just flat even for a costume drama. Ralph Fiennes is the best thing in this movie, but he can't even save it.
@Budaphly Unfortunately, JB's delivery is much too slow, garbled, and she has very little of the fiery energy of Cathy (except for the end). Ralph Fiennes gives the best interpretation of Heathcliff I've seen so far, in accordance to the book. He is truly frightening and his delivery is masterful. But, in all the Wuthering Heights I've seen the actors are always too old and the story looses something because of it.
now everyone says that she has a french accent in this movie......i can't detect one (though i don't have much to base it off of...only watched French Kiss as a comparison) is that true? is it just a slight one>?
I thought this production was absolutely incredible and Juliet Binoche was incandescent. This is only silly if you've never been in love. Sorry that's my conviction which goes well beyond opinion.
Yes she does, but she talks (in the book too) about how she wants to be rich and she wants to have a husband that's she proud of. She also mentions (in the book) that she wants a rich husband so she can give money to Heathcliff to free him from her older brother. She wants the best for him and she loves him, but she is still to selfish and proud to accept the idea of marrying 'down'.
in the book she was really young when she was contemplating marrying that one guy over being with heathcliff....like you forgave her because she was just stupid because she wasn't old enough yet to undnerstand what its like to not be with the one you love..
What's he eaten? seems delicious....

if u liked dis movie, i recommend the english patient. In that one, Ralph Fiennes and Juliet Binoche star in that movie as well....

now everyone says that she has a french accent in this movie......i can't detect one (though i don't have much to base it off of...only watched French Kiss as a comparison) is that true? is it just a slight one>?
zman740 2 years ago
She does at times, but she is French so it's understandable.

Yes. She's french and she really can't hide her accent, even on film. You can hear it a little.
I still think she makes the best Cathy - after all, we all know the French are brilliant.

i totally agree but thats because i think the actors here lack depth and the real essense of the characters portrayed in the novel

I thought this production was absolutely incredible and Juliet Binoche was incandescent. This is only silly if you've never been in love. Sorry that's my conviction which goes well beyond opinion.

love this! "Nelly, I am Heathcliff......." makes me sad, love it!

i think Cathy's prettier when she was younger :D

Why does Juliette Binoche giggle like a hyena throughout this movie? She makes the character seem mentally deranged.

@aiyamei1979 well, isn't cathy?

ok I have a question(it may sound stupid) But does cathy love heathcliff more then a brother yet?
twilightyankees 2 years ago 2
Yes she does, but she talks (in the book too) about how she wants to be rich and she wants to have a husband that's she proud of. She also mentions (in the book) that she wants a rich husband so she can give money to Heathcliff to free him from her older brother. She wants the best for him and she loves him, but she is still to selfish and proud to accept the idea of marrying 'down'.

I thought Nelly was supposed to be closer in age to them, since in the book she said they were all children at the same time
RedBull485 2 years ago 10
in the book she was really young when she was contemplating marrying that one guy over being with heathcliff....like you forgave her because she was just stupid because she wasn't old enough yet to undnerstand what its like to not be with the one you love..

didnt cathy hit nelly?? or am i way off??

in the book she slaps her, and then edgar. But this movie has a few alterations. A great movie nonetheless. Fiennes is perfect as Heathcliff.
