  • Loved dem days... Zephyr always reminds me of the hill in Boulder and Party Hardy for days...Pure Gonzo!!!many moons:)~

  • I played with Zephyr in 1980 for about 10 months (including that dive on Colfax), so let me add another perspective; Candy was a much better singer than you can imagine. None of the early recordings do her voice justice. She was MUCH better than Janis Joplin. Her harp skills were stellar. I saw her get on stage one night with James Cotton- she blew his ass off the stage. I had never done cocaine 'till I joined this band. We could do a 1/4 oz. BETWEEN SETS! I'm blessed to be alive today.

  • @neefferdude What dive? the Playpen or that place near Colorado Blvd.the one w/3 levels....do some acid in there on a full nite(back then of course)wait...that was the early70s...That was B.C. (before Coke). sorry,60 year old memory test...there was another place near York st.... saw Savoy Brown there.Colfax was fun back in the day:)~

  • @MajorTom5150 I'm not sure; it was way west on Colfax. It might have been called Daners? The place near York St; could that have been Mammoth Gardens? Before I joined the band, I saw Zephry there numerous times, including opening for Jethro Tull. They all came out from backstage with shocked looks on their face when Tommy took about a 15 minute " Echoplex solo".

  • Very listenable. Thanks for the share.

  • Bolin's guitar is awesome!

  • thanx johny you rock too cool

  • @ Johnnyvisionquest, 1st THANK YOU. 2nd do i know you?

@ HarpoWells 1, Tommy's brother Johnny has been performing Tommy's music for years also did you catch any of his Energy gigs, caught him in Evergreen Sr. @ a sockhop $5.00 then tramped around Denver & Boulder hittin ever gig he did, wow the Mammoth, did you ever hit The Family Dog Denver, my sis was the light tech.

  • Amen Andy131481. I followed Zephyr around Fort Collins and Mammoth Gardens in Denver the day. Candy would give me harmonica pointers between sets over a beer. I hope there are more tape tracks out there somewhere with her on the harp. Too cool. Someone needs to make a tribute band.

  • I played their albums so much that the needle started to poke through the other side of the record. Just kidding.

  • I like a whole lot of the music that is made by the kids of today...but I wish that this could be performed side by side with current American Karaoke star Haley Reinhart's renditions of classic oldies. I can not think of a better way to compare raw talent (Givens) with talent that would suffice at a karaoke night at a bar (Reinhart).

  • bon jam!!

  • I'm a 58yr old (retired) outlaw biker and I've seen a world of shit in my time. But this brings back memories of seeing them in the park in Boulder and makes me cry like a baby.Thank you, whoever provided this video.

  • @andy131481 No shit Andy. This was the bomb back then. I bought the studio album of this at 15 years old, the week it was released and still have a CD copy. Drop me a line and I'll send you a copy. Some other obscure stuff: Aorta, Captain Beyond, etc. Zephyr were the shit.

  • JohnnyVisionquest - thanks for this. I loved Zephyr's album Sunset Ride. I dare you to find a decent, playable vinyl copy. They're all hammered and played out ... and with good reason. What a great album. Saw David and Candy Givens and Zephyr play at that dive-bar on West Colfax in Lakewood, Colo. '75-'76 (circa). My old neighborhood never sounded so good - they rocked OUT - no matter how stoned.

  • I saw Zephyr in Central POark with Fleetwood Mac....I remember thinking...the record didn't do them a lot of justice.....now the demos were something else..Candy Givens had/has an amazing voice.....and Tommy Bolin was off the hook....if I remember correctly he blew up his echo plex......or something else... I have to say they were a really good band......

  • I saw Zephyr with Krackerjack in Abilene, Texas back then. Still one of the best shows I've ever been to.

  • I used to see Zephyr a lot at Tulagi's in Boulder in the late 60's opening for The Frantics (aka Frantic.) The Frantics were an extremely hard rock psychedelic band. The Frantics lead guitarist had the first echoplex I ever saw someone use with "flying saucer" solos. First time I saw Zephyr backing up The Frantics Tommy didn't have an echoplex - the next time he did but he never did the "flying saucer" solos when Zephyr opened for The Frantics. It was a great duble bill. A shame Tommy died.

  • @franko11t We never opened for anyone called the Frantics and Tommy got his echoplex inspiration from the guitarist in the McCoys - Rick Derringer when we saw them at The Scene in New York. Don't take the brown acid.

  • @dmgivens1 Brown acid was laced with strychnine and caused people to believe there were bands called the Frantics. We tried to tell folks . . . always stick with Orange Sunshine. : ).

  • @triplettam Sunshine Canyon's finest product.

  • Holy smokes...Bolin's gtr work on this version is absolutely on fire Excellent. A little too hot in the mix against the balance of the organ in the other channel, but deservingly so. Reminds me of Rory Gallagher in Taste and maybe some Cold Blood or Loading Zone

  • It sounds great. Tommys guitar and Candy`s is so different from the original LP. Any chance that the demos is going on some of the cd s as extras?

  • I went to high school with Candy's younger sister, Becky, in Elkton, Oregon. Becky and I used to hang out a lot back then and she turned me on to her big sister's Colorado band, Zephyr in '78. Great stuff! I got to meet Candy in 1983, just before she died. Still love all their music.

RIP Candy & Becky - Miss you both!

  • Brings back a lot of memories of the 1970s FM radio. Hard Rock at work & the late night partys. Strangely the two years I spent in the San Diego area, 1975-76 lacked that. We could only find comercial caca on the FM. ad to make do with tapes on te boom box. I was actually glad to get back to the Midwest & real rock radio In January 1977.

  • I used to watch these guys EVERY weekend at Daners. A real dive in Lakewood Co.

Candy Givens was a little gal with a big voice. Zephyr is still the best band out of Denver EVER!

  • extremely rare!!!

    incredible, what is this 72ish??

  • @koldfushen The promo stuff was shot in fall '69 in L.A. The live stuff is '71

  • Love her and hope to see her again.

  • Candy Givens was the female Robert Plant. Miss her.

  • Saw them at the cellar in Arlington Heights in Illinois. Lookin for Hunny Bunny

  • there is so little of tommy on video with good sound, what a shame. still looking for one live performance of stratus. tommy was great!!!!!

  • Grande som, tommy como sempre matador, com licks maravilhosos

  • Great video

  • A chance search brought me to this video - what luck! Thanks, Johnny VQ for the posting - keep 'em coming.
