O.o where is the close call at? they are both landing on different runways and as i see it, since both are by meters of difference it is a normal procedure
Ridiculous statement - this is not a close call at all. All major airports have parallel landing strips - only in bad weather are they not allowed to land simultaneously. The only crime here is not adhering to FAA LAW that states all passengers must turn off all electronic devices once the plane falls below 10,000 feet. Hope your account isn't traceable - you did break the law.
That was VERY cool!!! IF this ever happens in Salt Lake City, Utah, AND you get a video of it, could you PLEASE put it onto Youtube, AND send it to me? Thanks!!!
This is not a race, both aircraft are on ILS final and both are flying at the standard final approach speed of 150 ktias and both are following the standard glide slope for this runway, thats why it appears as if they're flying in formation.
This is standard procedure at SFO when the ceiling/visibility and prevailing winds are within certain limits. When one of those required criteria are out of of limits, SFO goes into the ground delay program to whittle the number of arrivals per hour to accommodate a single arrival stream.
@iamontrak Correct. in VFR conditions, parallel runways at KSFO are both usable; however, in IFR there, only one of the parallel runways are usable since the FAA dictates that parallel runways must be at least 1/2 mile apart to be used concurrently in IFR conditions. This is why Seattle got its third runway, because Seattle has a lot of IFR weather when it's not summer...and they've been getting busier.
Cool Video dude,,the VA pilots did all they can to win the race but AA pilots did their best to win the touchdown....but a big question who get first on the gate or ramp?
I've seen this happen on quite a few occasions. It happened to me 3 times in Atlanta (9L and 9R), twice in Boston (22L and 22R), and once in Orlando (18L and 18R).
Visual approaches they can be pretty close. If IFR and doing ILS it has to be at least 2,500 ft and spacing of aircraft are staggered spacing of 1.5 miles required. Greater than 4,300 between the two runways its consider independent parallel ILS approach and do not need to be staggered. But there's a non-transgression line if either get too far off into the other path, ATC orders both aircraft to break away. So in bad visibility there are limits to parallel approaches.
@SodomGomorrahWaDC Incorrect...they do this at a lot of the larger airports due to the amount of traffic. they bring them in on a very cautious approach. each pilot aware of the other. Not to mention, they aren't as close as you think. That is zoomed in quite a bit.
@osumbuckeyenut I know, they look like they're 50 feet away... But 200-300 feet is extremely close, airplanes almost never get within a mile of each other.
"Ladies and Gentlemen we will be taxiing to our assigned gate..... and if you look to your left, you can wave to the virgin airline pilot who bet me $50 bucks that he would touchdown first."
Its an ILS PRM App, SFO has been approved to use them. You can use both runways which normally would be unable to have parallel approaches. Special procedures are used to make sure they don't stray towards each other.
@flyinhigher1000 if only every pilot read the regs... Any parallel runways less than 4,300 ft center line to center line you have to have a diagonal separation of at least 1.5 miles.
@hammerogod Sir, I believe you may have lost your bet. For starters, search for SFO on Wikipedia to see the runway diagram. The VA flight landed terminal side (runway 28L) while the AA flight landed on the farther side (runway 28R). Considering that both VA and AA use the same terminal, unless during taxi VA was held back, then the VA flight should have made it first. The AA flight must then cross the active before reaching the terminals. That'll be $1.00 please =D
Before I completely admit failure I want you to notice how quickly the AA was breaking.
He probably took the turn-out he was slowing for at 1:25 (Delta or Kilo)...putting him across the active behind the VA ... and on the Bravo taxiway first ... therefore allowing him to beat the VA to the Terminal.
@deadcar I was wondering that...the airbus was ahead but the md touched down first...so who technically won? Is this like golf in racing terms though? Who ever stops first wins...
It's a PRM approach. To be used where independent parallel approaches cannot be used. In this case both aircraft are monitered by ATC who checks their precision. In case of deviation one of the aircraft will be told to abort the approach. The abort call may also mean the aircraft will have to make a descending turn to a certain altitude and heading before being allowed to climb again.
So it's not standard and it requires pilot qualification.
people, read the description... The title probably doesn't mean "close call" as in danger, but as joke, as if the planes were racing, and determining the winner is a "close call".
It's amazing the low number of people that actually take the extra 3 seconds to READ DESCRIPTIONS ON VIDEOS
