This is also known as the Sand stitch. Then there is a very similar stitch called the rice stitch that's just a little different. Knitswithcatfur has a video explaining the difference. She's the one who did the research.
Thanks Judy! I think this pattern is also great for hats (especially for men hats, 'cause you knit all the hat with one pattern - this one- and when you folded it it will have a different pattern.

I know you slip the first stitch and knit the last stitch backwards, but it's always so fast I seem to miss exactly what is going on. It might be really helpful if you could help us understand what the edges will look like with/without this technique. Anyhow, I hope you think this would be worth a video...thanks for all the great teachings!

What are you making? Just decrease as you normally would and try to pick up the pattern from that point. good luck with it.

why do you always skip the first one and never knit it? i always garter stitch the first one... please help :) Awesome video by the way!

@Amphibraider you skip the first one so that the edges look clean and pretty. it's called a selvage stitch.
