I don't know about the 12's or the 6's but my friend's V8 Detroit in an old KW cabover tractor got 5 mpg loaded and 7 mpg empty, just like my 350 bigcam Cummins. The only difference when we were loaded is that I had to slow down on the big hills and wait for him, and I had more weight than him. Empty though, we were pretty well matched for power on the hills.
my grandpa has a 79 kenworth long nose and he was a v12 in it blew up and said he needed a bigger one and got the v12 92 its huge and fast for a truck
needs more wheelbase then it rides like a bus. Always liked COE's better for "sightseeing" and learned on Emeryvilles with Ross cam steering. Had 71 KW COE w/ 12V71NA, 220" wheelbase. Used to give Monfort a run for their money across 80 in PA and dropped 1 gear on snowshoe with 46,000 in box. Those days are long gone. 4 valve heads didn't last with reduced sulphur. That's a nice truck though.
The reason the 12V-71 had been succeeded by the 8V-92 was, for the most part, less cylinders to deal with; just as why many diesel engines today use 6 cylinders.
They stopped years ago because drivers did not like being in an accident before the truck did...LOL. Good to see them making a comeback. They are better for tight areas as there is no nose...and that can be good.Except whe your tired and you forget your 6 feet off the ground with not much to stand on..
Last time I drove one was a Freightshaker and it was about 1979...or there about. A little sleeper with 10speed and a 290cummy turbo,Great truck...I sure miss that old girl.
They do still make cab over for the usa market. But not nearly as much as they use to. Though conventional's do ride nicer. I'll still take a good old bladder busting cab over any day. My dad owned a trucking company since the 1940's and I remember as a kid having to wear a snow suit and boots plus a blanket just to keep from freezing to death in his old 1966 cracker box. Also remember looking down and seeing a little snow bank by my feet.
no more american cab-overs (class 8) as of 2007. they are still available in smaller applications (landscaping trucks, home heating fuel delivery trucks)
I never really saw the cabover market as a big one here, I myself would prefer a conventional any day! and apparently the new American emissions is making it harder to be "modular:, the trucks today are now becoming more and more like cars. more fucking plastic and ridiculous parts!
when i was a kid my ol man was driving for mayflower and he dropped a 1271 in his 77 gmc cabover... twin 6 inch stacks... he is deaf now but loved that old truck...lol
Dude if I had the privi of owning that truck id have to modify the garage jus so she could be within eyeshot...my dad had a old 68 mack cabover with a v-8 and I am in love with the characteristics, sounds and smells of the old detroit stuff and mack stuff.!! great truck man
WOW, that could almost turn the earth!!! did u know that the most powerful ship engine has over 500,000bhp and over1.5 million lb/ft of torque!! insane.
Have u seen the TV show driving on ice roads or something, trucks in canada on frozen lake roads?
I drove a lot of detroits but a good 335 with a 12 button in the pump and a t-590 blower was hard to beat unless it was by a 1693 T/A clatterpillar

yep, they were made with fuel mileage being the 1st priority, not exactly a high power engine, but will get pretty much any job done eventually.
they were known for cracking the heads around the injectors although

They sound neat! But they phazed them out for a reason.I know the 2 stroke makes little torque verses say the N14 Cummins

Are you friggin serious? I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but even for the size of this block you'd think it do at least 5-7 mpg

The Series 60 Detroit Diesel 4 strokes get about 10 mpg. My brother drives an '02 Freightliner with a Series 60 and he gets good mileage.

A big 6 cylinder gets better mileage than a small 12 cylinder.

It and the 6-71 and 6V-92 all sound similar because of what is known as crank phasing.
