It was Buffalo medical staff and hospital staff that insured no player has died from a sport related accident in Buffalo considering the accident nature. Kevin Everett is also able to walk due to the Bills medical staff choosing to use a radical procedure (Controlled hypothermia) now touted as the preferred method for neck injured players.

The medic had to pinch off the artery by reaching inside and had to hold it untill doctors could stitch everything back together. The guy who saved Malarchuk was a Vietnam medic so I'm sure he wasn't traumatized by it; he must have seen much worse. Who knows with the medic in this video though.
