Parkening's version is a wooden as it gets, I first heard it as a kid and hated it then as I do now. Can't argue with Williams, but Barrueco's is the best.
While the sound quality of this video is a tad off, I do prefer Williams' playing to Parkenings. I feel Williams playing usually breathes a bit more and I like his touch. (Mind you, Im not crazy about the Smallman gutiars he uses now. Fleta is much better to my ears.) Im not calling Parkening a slouch by any stretch, who could? It takes some pretty big balls to call Williams' playing mediocre though.
Why doesn't Chris have the definitive one up? THis is bullshit. Chris has the best version......everyone knows it! IT's a fact. Like math and science, and the existence of energy in your body and mind. Ridiculous.
@JonnyCashmore When you wrote "THis is bullshit" you were warning us of the following content in you comment right? I thank you for that. There is no definitive version. And although I'm not really farmiliar with Parkening's, I suspect he plays Segovia's transcription note for note right? But if you have an open mind and want to hear a great version, listen to Robert Hill playing his transcription on the harpsichord.
there is no one like John Williams...his performances are amazing. No rush, consistent, elegancy, impressive...if you compare him with some guitarists today, maybe there are faster people, but they ALL sound rush and immature, Williams sounds like another musician from the violin or piano world. His hands position are just incredible.
compare to all who played chaconne, this chaconne of williams is not impressive or he change position which is not effective by segovias transcription check out the fingerings he does his own way. why segovia is the best check it out!!
You guys are right. The Guitar is a sublter instrument to the violin. Perlman's recording of the chaconne on YT was THE best version I have heard so far. But there's something about playing that first Dm triad that makes me feel I'm tapping into something much bigger than myself. Hmmmmm... XD
Right . The violin gives a more dramatic sound . I have nothing to say about that. I said this one is the best to any other guitar performences , not to any other performences of any instruments
If there was an objective way of rating or voting the best guitar chaconne performance ,this dry uninspiring mechanical and boring performance by Williams here would be much bellow 2000.I'm sure himself he would vote it down there anyway.
The Bach Chaconne is perfect only performed by...Uto Ughi; any interpretation on the guitar, even the most stylistically perfect, will never convey the pathos that can give the violin.
Wow, amazing! I've been looking for a video of a master guitarist playing thise piece and to say I'm quite impressed. I only wish I could have seen his fingerpicking a little better.

I always hear Segovia's versions in my head when I hear these pieces. Still some of the most natural and warm versions of Bach I've heard.

This guy really can play Bach! Amazing! His lute suites too are second to none. The Baroque period is what he excels at in my opinion.

one thing, he performed chaconne by his own way, changes position, he is good but some are not effective.

John Williams is not particulary my favourite guitarrist in musicality, but
I personaly think his control, interpretation and sound in the bachs chaconne is absolutley amazing. Listening to his clean recording makes you cry.
This video shows how amazing John Williams is.

at 5:43, does he do p-i-m-a-m-i at a super duper speed? Someone please enlighten me...
ragose 1 year ago
@ragose if its segovias transcription, which sounds like it, its p -i -ma-i-p-i-ma-i...
elopez4024 7 months ago
@elopez4024 It's not Segovia's. I think it's his own. And the end of first arpeggio goes p-i-m-a-m-i-p-i-m-a-m-i-... at super speed
