Usually, western cuisine involving rice is like all the ingredients together in a pan, like risotto, more stirring, usual asian cuisine involving rice uses rice as a side dish, plain or flavoured, hence a rice cooker since all you do is wait

I'm asian, and I used rice cooker, but I think how western chef cooked their rice on the pan with enough water, and stir it until they dried.. I know it's weird for us, but it's just different style. Gordon's dish might not be perfect, but for some1 who tried to get the understanding of Malaysian food in a week, second place was pretty big. The dish was state-of-art, beautifully done.
